Book excerpt: Basic Seismic Refraction Survey and Data Interpretation Techniques This book is written to impart knowledge on seismic refraction method, which covers data acquisition, processing and interpretation techniques. The discussion in this book is about seismic waves and their characteristics, theory of seismic refraction and field procedures. Examples of seismic refraction data and simple calculation are also provided to enable readers to better visualize and aid their understanding on the seismic refraction method. Rosli Saad is currently a lecturer at School of Physics, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Pulau Pinang with 30 years of experience in geophysics. His expertises is in the areas of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), gravity, magnetic, seismic and electrical methods. His main research is in engineering and environmental studies. He has published three research book chapters, four research books and more than 250 journal papers. Recently, he was appointed as head of geophysics section at the Centre of Tropical Geoengineering (GEOTROPIK), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

Book Collection and Analysis of Seismic Wave Propagation Data

Download or read book Collection and Analysis of Seismic Wave Propagation Data written by David E. Willis and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report summarizes one year of theoretical and applied research on propagation of seismic waves and techniques for analyzing data. The main objectives were to determine the frequency and energy of seismic signatures, and investigate attenuation, patterns of azimuthal radiation from source regions, and methods of determining the type of motion at the source. Natural and artificial sources were studied to develop diagnostic aids for distinguishing between earthquakes and underground nuclear detonations. Equipment for selection, reformatting, and digital-to-analog conversion for digitally recorded LASA data was constructed and is being checked out. Several approaches for using the parallel computational capabilities of optics for LASA data were developed. A study of background noise and reciprocity for teleseismic events as recorded on the bottom of a large fresh water lake has commenced with the emplacement of three-component seismometers in Lake Superior. Array data have been used for crustal studies on the Eastern United States. Digital mode filtering was investigated. A perturbation theory for seismic sources was developed. (Author).

Book A Computational Study of Thin Layer Effects in Shallow Seismic Refraction Surveys

Download or read book A Computational Study of Thin Layer Effects in Shallow Seismic Refraction Surveys written by R. E. Reinke and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seismic refraction surveys are a valuable tool for shallow engineering site characterization purposes. Standard refraction analysis uses first arrival time data to interpret subsurface layer velocities and thicknesses. In spite of their usefulness, refraction surveys suffer from several shortcomings. In this study, the practical influence of one of these shortcomings, the thin layer effect, was examined. Synthetic seismograms were computed, using the reflectivity method, for several thin layer models. These synthetic record sections were then treated as field data and the standard interpretation processes were performed. Significant discrepancies were observed in many cases between the true geologic model originally input to the code and the model interpreted from the synthetic record sections. Keywords: Primary waves(seismic waves), Seismic refraction, Wavelength, Synthetic seismograms, Geologic models, Thin layers.
