This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book appeals to an audience in the engineering field specifically Mechanical Engineering. Professional design engineers will find this work useful in the estimation of the magnitudes of residual stresses in components and correctly account for them when determining factors of safety. Destructive and non-destructive technicians will find it helpful in the condition monitoring of plant and equipment while a basis for researchers is laid to pursue further work. The book focuses on the measurements of displacements, time of flight/ultrasonic velocity and strains in steel specimens which subsequently prompts the calculation of stresses. The following methods are covered; Hole Drilling, Ultrasonic (Debro-30) System and Digital Shearography. Emphasis is laid on the experimental procedures and the analysis of the results thereof. A novel technique of quantifying residual stresses using shearograms obtained from Digital Shearography experimental data is proposed. This however warrants further investigations that require independent verification stress measurement methods.

Book An Analytical Approach to Reference Samples for Ultrasonic Residual Stress Measurement

Download or read book An Analytical Approach to Reference Samples for Ultrasonic Residual Stress Measurement written by NN. Hsu and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While residual stress measurements using ultrasonic techniques have been under development for some time, practical applications are still limited. One of the difficulties is the lack of suitable reference samples for instrument calibration. This paper specifically addresses the question of how to produce a known stress-state reference sample, and ultrasonically determine its zero stress state. The approach was to design and construct a sample possessing residual stresses that can be deduced from established theory. A shrink-fit ring-plug assembly was fabricated from carefully screened aluminum bar stock, forming a disk suitable for both longitudinal and shear wave calibration. Here we report results using longitudinal waves.

Then, this text considers residual stresses, heat flow, distortion, fracture toughness, and brittle and fatigue fractures of weldments. This selection concludes by discussing the effects of distortion and residual stresses on buckling strength of welded structures and effects of weld defects on service behavior. This book also provides supplementary discussions on some related and selected subjects. This text will be invaluable to metallurgists, welders, and students of metallurgy and welding.

Book New Challenges in Residual Stress Measurements and Evaluation

Download or read book New Challenges in Residual Stress Measurements and Evaluation written by Caterina Casavola and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-07-22 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residual stresses (RS) are stresses present inside materials even in the absence of any applied load. They are of capital importance because they can impact greatly on the mechanical strength of the material, on its dimensional correspondence to design specifications as well as on the fatigue life of the part. RS measurement and evaluation is currently an important research topic where a lot of challenges still need to be addressed. This book aims to provide the reader with an overview of the principal novelties in this field including current limitations and potential future developments. Both radically new experimental approaches as well as recent evolutions of consolidated ones will be presented, along with the latest novelties in the area of numerical residual stress evaluation.

Book Ultrasonic Methods for Nondestructive Measurement of Residual Stress

Download or read book Ultrasonic Methods for Nondestructive Measurement of Residual Stress written by Fred Rollins and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shear wave birefringence in metal specimens has been studied as a possible method of nondestructively measuring residual stresses. It was established that the stress-induced birefringence in Al and steel varies linearly with the magnitude of an applied stress and does not change appreciably as these metals are deformed plastically. Other sources of birefringence were studied also. Preferred orientation is a major source especially in rolled metal stock. A pulse echo technique for observing shear wave birefringence is described and the current limitations are discussed. (Author).

Book Review of Ultrasonic Velocity Methods of Determining Residual Stress

Download or read book Review of Ultrasonic Velocity Methods of Determining Residual Stress written by Stuart James Rumble and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residual stress is the stress remaining in a body when all external forces have been removed. Residual stresses can occur as a result of fabrication, assembly, load history, heat treatment or welding. They may be compressive or tensile, and often contribute to the occurrence of component failure. The contribution of these stresses to premature structural failure has long been recognized. However their measurement has usually been difficult and in many cases not possible. Recognition of the benefits of knowing the value of residual stresses has led to recent efforts to improve the capability of known methods of measuring them and to the development of new techniques. The residual stresses in a body can be divided into two classes depending on the extent of the stress. In typical engineering materials, residual microstresses extend over a few grains, whereas residual macrostresses which are most amenable to the practical measurement methods discussed in this paper. It notes that while velocity methods have not been refined to the stage of practical use, they show considerable promise. The theoretical basis, and the experimental techniques of the ultrasonic methods are reviewed with emphasis on the separation of the competing effects of texture and stress on ultrasonic velocity. Keyword: Australia.

Book Computer Applications in Production and Engineering

Download or read book Computer Applications in Production and Engineering written by Frank Plonka and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the latter half of the 20th century, forces have conspired to make the human community, at last, global. The easing of tensions between major nations, the expansion of trade to worldwide markets, widespread travel and cultural exchange, pervasive high-speed communications and automation, the explosion of knowledge, the streamlining of business, and the adoption of flexible methods have changed the face of manufacturing itself, and of research and education in manufacturing. The acceptance of the continuous improvement process as a means for organizations to respond quickly and effectively to swings in the global market has led to the demand for individuals educated in a broad range of cultural, organizational, and technical fields and capable of absorbing and adapting required knowledge and training throughout their careers. No longer will manufacturing research and education focus on an industrial sector or follow a national trend, but rather will aim at enabling international teams of companies to cooperate in rapidly designing, prototyping, and manufacturing products. The successful enterprise of the 21st century will be characterized by an organizational structure that efficiently responds to customer demands and changing global circumstances, a corporate culture that empowers employees at all levels and encourages constant communication among related groups, and a technological infrastructure that fully supports process improvement and integration. In changing itself to keep abreast of the broader transformation in manufacturing, the enterprise must look first at its organization and culture, and thereafter at supporting technologies.
