Book A Program for Computing Steady Inviscid Three dimensional Supersonic Flow on Reentry Vehicles

Download or read book A Program for Computing Steady Inviscid Three dimensional Supersonic Flow on Reentry Vehicles written by J. M. Solomon and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive computational procedure is presented for predicting the supersonic region of the flow field on advanced reentry vehicle shapes in steady flight at pitch and yaw. The procedure utilizes explicit second order accurate finite difference methods applied to the conservation law form of the steady inviscid flow equations. Improved numerical methods are used at the body surface and the bow shock wave. Provisions for treating body geometries with discontinuous slopes are also included. Either perfect gas or real gas equilibrium thermodynamic properties can be used. The computational procedure is implemented as a FORTRAN computer code which provides a practicable representation of the inviscid flow field and the resulting aerodynamic force and moment on the vehicle. In this report (Vol. I) the analytical and numerical development of the procedure is presented and the associated computer code is described. A comparison report (Vol. II User's Manual) contains detailed instructions for operating the code and interpreting the output results. (Author).

Book Analysis of Three dimensional Inviscid Supersonic Flow Between a Body and an Outer Wall

Download or read book Analysis of Three dimensional Inviscid Supersonic Flow Between a Body and an Outer Wall written by W. C. Armstrong and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three-dimensional inviscid supersonic flow equations are solved for the flow over a body located within a duct. Numerical solutions are obtained by use of the reference plane method of characteristics technique. Results of the analysis are compared with experimental test body pressure distributions obtained with an off-design jet stretcher system. The analysis is sufficiently general so that a variety of internal flows may be predicted. A computer program listing and an example problem are presented.

Book Method of Characteristics for Calculating Three dimensional Supersonic Gas Flows

Download or read book Method of Characteristics for Calculating Three dimensional Supersonic Gas Flows written by Yu N. Podladchikov and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The method of characteristics (extended from two to three independent variables) is used to solve the problem of supersonic flow of an ideal gas over a blunt body. The steady motion of the gas is described by a system of partial differential equations. A Cartesian coordinate system is fixed to the flow. A scheme based on the relations on the characteristic planes is proposed for calculating the supersonic portion of the flow, and therefore the calculation of a point depends on whether it is found in the shock wave, in the flow field, or on the surface of the body. The computational procedures for these three cases are outlined and illustrated by examples. (Author).

Book Three Dimensional Supersonic Flow Over a Smooth Body with Shock Producing Protuberance

Download or read book Three Dimensional Supersonic Flow Over a Smooth Body with Shock Producing Protuberance written by Richard A. Scheuing and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation is directed primarily at the second order solution of the three dimensional, supersonic flow field around an arbitrarily-shaped body which, although otherwise of smooth contour, has a protuberance that generates a shock wave and substantially disturbs the flow downstream. Such configurations occur for example, in fuselage-canopy combinations. The calculation of the flow field about a body with no local protuberance is considered first, the solution being based on the so-called method of near-characteristics. Typical numerical results are presented for circular and elliptic cones, tangent ogives of circular and elliptic cross section, and a representative non-axisymmetric compression surface. Comparisons with results from conical flow theories and with experimental data are made wherever possible. The theoretical analysis and computational procedure evolved for the primary body is then extended to permit the addition of the shock-producing protuberance. This approach enable the flow upstream of the secondary shock to be considered uniform.

Book An Introduction to Compressible Flows with Applications

Download or read book An Introduction to Compressible Flows with Applications written by José Pontes and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a concise and practical survey of the principles governing compressible flows, along with selected applications. It starts with derivation of the time-dependent, three-dimensional equation of compressible potential flows, and a study of weak waves, including evaluation of the sound speed in gases. The following chapter addresses quasi-one-dimensional flows, the study of normal shock waves, and flow in ducts with constant cross section subjected to friction and/or heat transfer. It also investigates the effects of friction and heat transfer in ducts with variable cross section. The chapter ends by pointing to the analogy between one-dimensional compressible flows and open channel hydraulics. Further, the book discusses supersonic flows, including the study of oblique shock waves, and supersonic flows over corners and wedges. It also examines Riemann problems, numerical resolution of the wave equation, and of nonlinear hyperbolic problems, including propagation of strong waves. A subsequent chapter focuses on the small perturbation theory of subsonic, transonic and supersonic flows around slender bodies aligned or almost aligned to the uniform inflow. In particular, it explores subsonic and supersonic flows over a wavy wall. Lastly, an appendix with a short derivation of the Fluid Mechanics basic equations is included. The final chapter addresses the problem of transonic flows where both subsonic and supersonic are present. Lastly, an appendix with a short derivation of the Fluid Mechanics basic equations is included. Illustrated with several practical examples, this book is a valuable tool to understand the most fundamental mathematical principles of compressible flows. Graduate Mathematics, Physics and Engineering students as well as researchers with an interest in the aerospace sciences benefit from this work.
