This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foe of Compromise, and Other Essays Surely, they were right. The analogy of nature, common sense, the experience of man kind, crystallized in proverbs, and all the digui fied and honored usage of our human societies ranged themselves on their side. And yet, we did not rest in the peace which they had made. Their contemporary, Garrison, the abolitionist, must have known that all these things were against him; he must have felt how harshly the strife he brought into our Republic of wel fare and opportunity broke in upon the soft music which ears like Choate's were harking for. Nevertheless, he went on: and soon there was war and death and mourning in the land. Some said that the outcome proved compromise a fail ure; more said, it was the fault of Garrison and of the other extremists on both sides. There was peace again, at last: a sure peace for the Republic; surer and deeper for some hundreds of' thousands of young men in blue and gray uniforms, mourned a while by their young wives and sweethearts, -mourned without ceasing by dim-eyed mothers. The end of compromise and the end of warfare were the same. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book On Compromise Classic Reprint

Download or read book On Compromise Classic Reprint written by John Morley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Compromise It is pretty plain that an inquiry of this kind needs to be fixed by reference to a given set of social circumstances tolerably well understood. There are some common rules as to the expedi ency of compromise and conformity, but their application is a matter of endless variety and the widest elasticity. The interesting and useful thing is to find the relation of these too vague rules to actual conditions to transform them into practical guides and real interpreters of what is right and best in thought and conduct, in a special and definite kind of emergency. According to the current assumptions of the writer and the preacher, the one commanding law is that men should 'eling to truth and right, if the very heavens fall. In principle this is universally accepted. To the partisans of authority and tradition it is as much a commonplace as to the partisans of the most absolute and unflinching rationalism. Book Nullification and Compromise

Download or read book Nullification and Compromise written by John Mason Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-07 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nullification and Compromise: A Retrospective View A generation has passed away and another has taken its place since the chivalry of South Carolina assumed a hostile attitude towards the government of the United States, and undertook, in the plenitude of an assumed ah solute and paramount sovereignty, to nullify certain laws of the national government, and forcibly to resist their execu tion within the limits of her territory. This was an impor tant event in our political history. It was one of the out bursts of that irrepressible conflict between freedom and slavery about which so much has 'been said and written, and which is now raging with accumulated intensity. Be lieving as we do, that a great mistake was committed by our government on that occasion, and that we are now suf fering the bitter consequences of that mistake, it may be useful to review the history of the nullification controversy, and to learn wisdom from the lessons which it inculcates. Many active politicians of the present day were then either unborn or too young to feel an interest, and to take a part in the discussions and measures to which that controversy gave rise. Others, of a more advanced age, may have for gotten them in the lapse of intermediate years, and may not now have within their reach, the necessary documents to refresh their memories. As history is philosophy teach.lug bv example, it is well occasionally to pause and listen to its teachings.
