Book excerpt: An experimental study has been conducted to determine the effects of local thermal loading on the compressive behavior of glass fiber composites. The primary factors considered were the intensity of thermal loading and the applied compressive load. The material specimens tested were laminate plates composed of Micarta 010 FR4, a fire retardant glass/epoxy laminate. Two types of testing were conducted for heat fluxes of 85 kW/m2, 140 kW/m2, and 195 kW/m2. The first type involved the unloaded radiant thermal testing of the material and provided a baseline from which the effects of thermal loading on the physical properties of the composite specimen were determined. The second type was a combined loading test, which involved loading specimens in compression to a constant applied load and subjecting them to a local thermal load.

Book excerpt: All composite constituents are modelled as linear-elastic material, where both isotropic and anisotropic materials are considered depending on the length-scale. It is assumed that the moment of stability loss in the microstructure of materials is treated as the onset of the fracture process. Besides that, the critical strain that corresponds to loss of stability in the microstructure of the composite, either surface or internal instability, must be smaller than the critical strain that corresponds to loss of stability of the entire composite. This project involves parameterised variables, such as the crack size, the crack spacing, the layer volume fraction and the fibre volume fraction. At each length-scale two types of cracks are analysed, namely, cracks with stress-free crack faces and cracks with frictionless Hertzian contact of the crack faces. A number of finite-element models for each length-scale are developed, and are validated analytically and numerically. The models' ability to simulate practical composite structures to a useful degree of accuracy with suitable material properties is discussed. A number of parameters, which quantifies the interfacial crack interaction and crack faces contact interaction phenomena, are introduced and discussed. Qualitative discussion on the crack faces contact zones, post-critical behaviour of composites and crack propagation are presented and discussed. Finally, the subject areas for the future work are outlined.

Book excerpt: Determination of compressive properties at failure is an important factor for the design of composite structures. In this work, an analysis concerning the compression strength in fibre direction of composite structures is presented. A novel specimen geometry is proposed with the aim to obtain failure in a valid zone of the coupon free of stress concentrations. Experimental tests permitted to validate the usage of the new coupon in compression and four-points bending, at room and elevated temperature. Further tests permitted to study the influence of matrix degradation on compressive strength in fibre direction. Experimental results demonstrated different behaviours for carbon and glass reinforced plastics. A non-local failure criterion was utilized to predict the strength of composite structures with stress concentrations in tension and compression. The identified parameters were validated on coupons presenting size effects. The failure mechanisms of particular laminates in static and fatigue tension (ex. quasi-isotropic) where analyzed. Delamination can be the cause of these failures, in particular for UD plies and brittle matrices. In other cases, failure can be explained by compression failure in fibre direction generated by Poisson effect and favoured by matrix degradation. This failure mechanism permitted to model the experimental results in fatigue loading for quasi-isotropic laminates fabricated with a balanced carbon/PEEK woven ply. Finally the influence of matrix damage on the characteristic length of the non-local failure criterion was assessed on pre-damaged coupons with stress concentrations.
