Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compression of an Axially Symmetric Plasma With Non-Isotropic Pressure A two-fluid collisionless model of a plasma is used to describe the behavior or a fully ionized gas under axially symmetric radial compression, a problem referred to as the pinch. Two pressure tensors are derived and used in the equations, one for the ions and one for the electrons. The ion pressure is determined by taking higher moments of the ion Vlasov equation and assuming that the third moments of the distribution function can be neglected. Expressions for the electron pressure are found from an asymptotic expansion of the electron distribution function. The expansion parameter is the square root of the ratio of the electron mass to the ion mass. The electron pressure tensor is found to depend on the magnetic fields as well as the density while the ion tensor is approximately proportional to the density raised to a power which depends on the radius. The equations of motion are put into Lagrangian coordinates and solved numerically on the Cdc 6600 digital computer. A proof of the stability of the difference method in the special case of zero electron pressure is included.
