  • Pages : 168 pages

Download or read book Foot and Ankle Fusions written by Christopher P. Chiodo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book is a focused and comprehensive presentation of common fusion procedures (arthrodesis) for the foot and ankle, including patient selection, pre-operative assessment, intra-operative decision-making, and post-operative assessment. Sensibly divided into sections on the ankle, hindfoot, midfoot, and forefoot, each chapter concentrates on a specific fusion procedure for each area, including both open and minimally invasive surgical techniques. The chapters open with an overview of the procedure, including relevant historical points, evaluation, and indications and contraindications, then provide a detailed description of the techniques themselves, including clinical pearls and pitfalls. Case material is included as well, providing real-world illustration of each technique. Since arthrodesis can have a permanent effect on the gait of the patient, the procedure needs to be planned and performed with the utmost care and attention. With that focus clearly in mind, Foot and Ankle Fusions is an excellent resource for orthopedic surgeons, podiatrists, residents and fellows.

Book Hip Arthrodesis and Associated Problems

Download or read book Hip Arthrodesis and Associated Problems written by R. Liechti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last 10 years, total prosthetic replacement has become the hip oper ation for many but not all surgeons. In our clinic the increasing frequency of TP has been paralleled by a reduction in the frequency of 10 and HA. For the experienced orthopaedic surgeon and hip surgeon, hip disease has so many facets that it could not possibly be tackled with one operation alone. Thus, HA seems recently to have won renewed recognition. It has once more become the procedure of choice in specific cases, possibly because of certain disadvantages and complications associated with TP which have somewhat tempered the original optimism. Currently, the risk of infection or loosening of the pros thesis is such that the operation cannot justifiably be recommended for patients under 55-60 years of age. In contrast with HA, in the majority of cases the results of TP or 10 are not fully predictable. The loss of joint motion is offset by two important advantages: -complete freedom from pain - full weight bearing is possible on the arthrodesed hip. On following up our HA operations from 1961 to 1971, we examined the development of the operative procedures in our clinic. We found that the range of indications had narrowed as stricter criteria were applied in choosing patients for operation. Adequate and precise operative tech niques were developed. We studied the biomechanics of the hip joint exten sively (effect of arthrodesis on the statics and dynamics of the hip joint and neighbouring joints).

  • Author : William Waugh
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book John Charnley written by William Waugh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hip replacement operations have become commonplace during the past ten years, but none the less it is well to remember the struggle to overcome the initial difficulties before the achievement of the successful results which are confidently expected today. Certainly, in the 1950s attempts to relieve pain and restore movement to an arthritic hip frequently failed. Such operations which were practised often involved a prolonged period of immobilisation which would now not be tolerated. For progress to be made orthopaedic surgeons had to rely on the loyalty and stoicism of their patients who allowed untried procedures to be carried out on themselves, often without appreciating the possible outcome. These surgical experiments resulted in progress being made, and the failures led to a greater understanding of the problems involved. The importance of collaboration with bio-engineers was also recognised, and the search began for suitable materials with which to make an artificial joint. Progress was made in many centres throughout the world, and surgeons in the United Kingdom were at the forefront in devising original techniques. Although others also produced new models, John Charnley was a pioneer and an innovator who influenced the development of hip relacement more than any other individual. In telling the story of his life this book is inevitably also the story of the operation, but it is not intended to be a scientific evaluation of his work.
