Book The Russian Civil Wars 1916 1926

Download or read book The Russian Civil Wars 1916 1926 written by Jon Smele and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume offers a comprehensive and original analysis and reconceptualisation of the compendium of struggles that wracked the collapsing Tsarist empire and the emergent USSR, profoundly affecting the history of the twentieth century. The reverberations of those decade-long wars echo to the present day--not despite, but because of the collapse of the Soviet Union, which re-opened many old wounds, from the Baltic to the Caucasus. Contemporary memorialising and 'de-memorialising' of these wars, therefore form part of the book's focus, but at its heart lie the struggles between various Russian political and military forces which sought to inherit and preserve, or even expand, the territory of the tsars, overlain with examinations of the attempts of many non-Russian national and religious groups to divide the former empire. The reasons why some of the latter were successful (Poland and Finland, for example), while others (Ukraine, Georgia and the Muslim Basmachi) were not, are as much the author's concern as are explanations as to why the chief victors of the 'Russian' Civil Wars were the Bolsheviks. Tellingly, the work begins and ends with battles in Central Asia--a theatre of the 'Russian' Civil Wars that was closer to Mumbai than it was to Moscow"--Publisher description.

Book High Pressure Shock Compression of Solids VII

Download or read book High Pressure Shock Compression of Solids VII written by Vladimir E. Fortov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting some of the most recent results of Russian research into shock compression, as well as historical overviews of the Russian research programs into shock compression, this volume will provide Western researchers with many novel ideas and points of view. The chapters in this volume are written by leading Russian specialists various fields of high-pressure physics and form accounts of the main researches on the behavior of matter under shock-wave interaction. The experimental portions contain results of studies of shock compression of metals to high and ultra-high pressure, shock initiation of polymorphic transformations, strength, fracture and fragmentation under shock compression, and detonation of condensed explosives. There are also chapters on theoretical investigations of shock-wave compression and plasma states in regimes of high-pressure and high- temperature. The topics of the book are of interest to scientists and engineers concerned with questions of material behavior under impulsive loading and to the equation of state of matter. Application is to questions of high-speed impact, inner composition of planets, verification of model representations of material behavior under extreme 1oading conditions, syntheses of new materials, development of new technologies for material processing, etc. Russian research differs from much of the Western work in that it has traditionally been wider-ranging and more directed to extremes of response than to precise characterization of specific materials and effects. Western scientists could expect to benefit from the perspective gained from close knowledge of the Russian work.

Book Russian Federation

Download or read book Russian Federation written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macroeconomic developments have been very favorable since early 1999, strengthening in important areas lately. Real GDP has more than recovered from the recession that followed the 1998 crisis and the recovery is gaining momentum, with recent data suggesting that real GDP is growing at an annual rate of 6–7 percent. The strong macroeconomic performance reflects mainly the large real ruble depreciation in 1998, but also the increase in oil prices in world markets and a significant strengthening of fiscal and monetary policies.

Book Geometric Method for Stability of Non Linear Elastic Thin Shells

Download or read book Geometric Method for Stability of Non Linear Elastic Thin Shells written by Jordanka Ivanova and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ivanova (mechanics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences) and Pastrone (mathematics, Universita di Torino) present this volume on the new developments and application of the geometric method to the nonlinear stability problem for thin non-elastic shells. The geometric method has been treated previously in the 1960s and 1980s in monographs by A. V. Pogorelov (Harkov, Ukraine) but written in Russian only, thus making his ideas inaccessible to much of the international scientific community. The current text requires a basic understanding of introductory surface theory, stability of shells, and partial differential equations. It is intended as a textbook for post-graduate students in structural engineering and applied mathematics, and as a reference for academic and industrial researchers. c. Book News Inc.

Download or read book We written by Yevgeny Zamyatin and published by Diamond Pocket Books Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2023-03-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We is a dystopian novel written by Russian writer Yevgeny Zamyatin. Originally drafted in Russian, the book could be published only abroad. It was translated into English in 1924. Even as the book won a wide readership overseas, the author's satiric depiction led to his banishment under Joseph Stalin's regime in the then USSR. The book's depiction of life under a totalitarian state influenced the other novels of the 20th century. Like Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-four, We describes a future socialist society that has turned out to be not perfect but inhuman. Orwell claimed that Brave New World must be partly derived from We, but Huxley denied this. The novel is set in the future. D-503, a spacecraft engineer, lives in the One State which assists mass surveillance. Here life is scientifically managed. There is no way of referring to people except by their given numbers. The society is run strictly by reason as the primary justification for the construct of the society. By way of formulae and equations outlined by the One State, the individual's behaviour is based on logic.

Book Fracture of Materials Under Compression Along Cracks

Download or read book Fracture of Materials Under Compression Along Cracks written by Aleksander N. Guz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-25 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the problems of fracture mechanics of materials with cracks under the loading directed along the cracks. It considers two non-classical fracture mechanisms, namely the fracture of bodies compressed along cracks and the fracture of materials with initial (residual) stresses acting in parallel to the surfaces of cracks location, and presents new approaches (also including combined one) developed in the framework of three-dimensional linearized mechanics of deformable bodies. It then discusses the results of studies on two- and three-dimensional problems for various configurations of crack locations in isotropic and anisotropic materials, and based on these results, critically evaluates the accuracy and applicability limits of the “beam approximation” approach, which is widely used to study various problems of the fracture of bodies under compression along parallel cracks.

Book Critical Theory in Russia and the West

Download or read book Critical Theory in Russia and the West written by Alastair Renfrew and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-04 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional view that the rise of Western theoretical thought in the 1960s and 1970s could be traced back to the Soviet 1920s, once accepted in Russia and the West alike because it directly associated the academic prestige of contemporary Western theory with the intellectual climate of post-revolutionary Russia, is increasingly challenged today. With the gradual retreat in recent years of theory from the high ground of the Western humanities, new work has emerged to suggest unexpected parallels and to undermine others. This book, with contributions from some of the most visible specialists in the field, re-examines the significant transfers, cross-fertilisations and synergies of cultural and literary theory between Russia and the West, from the 1920s through to the present day. It focuses primarily on those tendencies which have made the most significant contribution to critical theory over the last century, and looks ahead at the theoretical paradigms that are most likely to shape the future dialogue between Russia and the West in the humanities.

Book High Pressure Shock Compression of Solids IV

Download or read book High Pressure Shock Compression of Solids IV written by Lee Davison and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While much is known about the effects of shock compression on monolithic materials, the unusual physical and chemical processes that take place when a porous medium is shocked have hardly been studied until now. Here, leading researchers in condensed matter physics, physical chemistry, metallurgy, mechanics, and materials science bridge this gap. The focus is on heterogeneous deformation mechanisms, nonequilibrium thermodynamics, and chemical processes, covering such topics as modelling the complex interplay of thermal, mechanical, and chemical processes; experimental data on pore collapse and their interpretation; and synthesis of new materials through shock-induced chemical reactions. By presenting not only the most recent results, but also the open questions that remain, these essays convey the excitement of developing a scientific basis for understanding shock compression.
