Book Literary Translation Reception and Transfer

Download or read book Literary Translation Reception and Transfer written by Norbert Bachleitner and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three concepts mentioned in the title of this volume imply the contact between two or more literary phenomena; they are based on similarities that are related to a form of ‘travelling’ and imitation or adaptation of entire texts, genres, forms or contents. Transfer comprises all sorts of ‘travelling’, with translation as a major instrument of transferring literature across linguistic and cultural barriers. Transfer aims at the process of communication, starting with the source product and its cultural context and then highlighting the mediation by certain agents and institutions to end up with inclusion in the target culture. Reception lays its focus on the receiving culture, especially on critcism, reading, and interpretation. Translation, therefore, forms a major factor in reception with the general aim of reception studies being to reveal the wide spectrum of interpretations each text offers. Moreover, translations are the prime instrument in the distribution of literature across linguistic and cultural borders; thus, they pave the way for gaining prestige in the world of literature. The thirty-eight papers included in this volume and dedicated to research in this area were previously read at the ICLA conference 2016 in Vienna. They are ample proof that the field remains at the center of interest in Comparative Literature.

Book The Media in Arab Countries

Download or read book The Media in Arab Countries written by Tourya Guaaybess and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-01-23 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early research work on international communication, the countries of North Africa and the Middle East were seen as part of the “Third World”, and the media had to be at the service of development. However, this situation is changing due to the transnationalization and liberalization of the media. Indeed, since the 1990s, the entry of the South – and Arab countries in this case – into the “information society” has become the dominant creed, although the vision is still globalizing and marked by stereotypes. Representations of these societies are closely associated with international relations and geopolitics, characterized by tensions and conflicts. However, a force has come to disrupt the traditional rules of the game: Arab audiences. Digital media, the dissemination of which has been enabled by the implementation of the “information society”, empowers them to participate fully in a media confluence. This liberation from the discourse has two major consequences: the media and journalism sector has become more strategic than ever, and action toward development must be reinvented.

Book Le Dilemme arabe et les Dix Commandements US

Download or read book Le Dilemme arabe et les Dix Commandements US written by Omar Mazri and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-02-06 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Political Extremism and Rationality

Download or read book Political Extremism and Rationality written by Albert Breton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-07 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political extremism is widely considered to be the product of irrational behavior. The distinguishing feature of this collection by well-known economists and political scientists from North America, Europe and Australia is to propose a variety of explanations which all insist on the rationality of extremism. Contributors use variants of this approach to shed light on subjects such as the conditions under which democratic parties take extremist positions, the relationship between extremism and conformism, the strategies adopted by revolutionary movements, and the reasons why extremism often leads to violence. The authors identify four core issues in the study of the phenomenon: the nature (definition) of extremism and its origins in both democratic and authoritarian settings, the capacity of democratic political systems to accommodate extremist positions, the strategies (civil disobedience, assassination, lynching) chosen by extremist groups, and the circumstances under which extremism becomes a threat to democracy.

Book excerpt: The human experience of war is not only remembered by societies through memorials, but also through the depiction of wars and important battles of respective national histories on screen. Very often, the image presented is related to existent semiotics, and the respective sign systems determine the image of heroic actions and violence on the screen. The present volume provides a deeper insight into the forces at play when war films are presented on the big screen and intends to show why and how violent conflicts often have an afterlife as visual media as well.

  • Publisher : Gingko Library

Download or read book The Arab Christ written by Mouchir Basile Aoun and published by Gingko Library. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reflection on Christianity in Arab society. This work explores the Christian faith in the current intercultural context of Arab societies. It argues that Arab Christianity seeks to express the Christian faith through openness to Muslim otherness, existential conviviality, and fraternal solidarity. In order to safeguard not only the physical existence of these communities but also and above all the relevance and richness of their message of life, the theological reflection presented here takes on a three-part task. First, it faithfully describes the sociopolitical and sociocultural reality of the historical integration of Arab Christian communities. Second, it reinterprets the content of the Christ event with reference to the challenge of Muslim otherness. And finally, it offers a path for conversion that involves a form not only of evangelical practice, designed to foster bonds of fraternal solidarity between the inhabitants of the Arab world but also of shared spiritual quest for moral and political commitment.

Book Culture and Crisis in the Arab World

Download or read book Culture and Crisis in the Arab World written by Richard Jacquemond and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2011, the art of the Arab uprisings has been the subject of much scholarly and popular attention. Yet the role of artists, writers and filmmakers themselves as social actors working under extraordinary conditions has been relatively neglected. Drawing on critical readings of Bourdieu's Field Theory, this book explores the production of culture in Arab social spaces in 'crisis'. In ten case studies, contributors examine a wide range of countries and conflicts, from Algeria to the Arab countries of the Gulf. They discuss among other things the impact of Western public diplomacy organisations on the arts scene in post-revolutionary Cairo and the consequences of dwindling state support for literary production in Yemen. Providing a valuable source of empirical data for researchers, the book breaks new ground in adapting Bourdieu's theory to the particularities of cultural production in the Middle East and North Africa.

Book Propos du leader fondateur Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan

Download or read book Propos du leader fondateur Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan written by and published by دائرة الثقافة والسياحة – أبوظبي، مركز أبوظبي للغة العربية، إصدارات. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Words of a Leader: Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan” was issued in Arabic and translated into various languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Hindi and Italian. The book, which was issued in conjunction with the celebration of the birth centenary of the Late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan and “The Year of Zayed”, contains selected quotes by Sheikh Zayed that reflect the foundations upon which he established his rule, as well as the principles and values on which his vision to build and develop the United Arab Emirates was founded. Among his most notable principles is his belief that investing in the people is far more important than investing in buildings and material life, and that society’s development must include all aspects of life, such as urbanization, economy, social life, culture and all kinds of development. He also called for proper use of resources and wealth and advocated openness to modern science. Through many of Sheikh Zayed’s quotes and sayings, the book reveals how deep he was intellectually, and how diverse and rich his vision was, and shows how he was interested in all groups of society and keen to address and provide advice to everyone, particularly the youth, whom he always considered an important contributor to the future and success of this nation. Sheikh Zayed focused on encouraging the youth on every occasion and motivating them to work harder and more creatively. Moreover, he always advocated for respecting women and providing them with equal opportunities in all aspects of life.

Book The Epoch of Universalism 1769 1989 L poque de l universalisme 1769 1989

Download or read book The Epoch of Universalism 1769 1989 L poque de l universalisme 1769 1989 written by Franck Hofmann and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2019 witnessed the 30th anniversary of the German reunification. But the remembrance of the fall of the Berlin Wall coincided with another event of global importance that caught much less attention: the 250th anniversary of Napoleon Bonaparte’s birth. There is an undeniable historical and philosophical dimension to this coincidence. Napoleon’s appearance on the scene of world history seems to embody European universalism (soon thereafter in the form of a ‘modern’ imperial project); whilst scholars such as Francis Fukuyama saw in the events of 1989 its historical fulfilment. Today, we see more clearly that the fall of the Berlin Wall stands for an epistemic earthquake, which generated a world that can no longer be grasped through universal concepts. Here, we deal with the idea of Europe and of its relation to the world itself. Picking up on this contingency of world history with an ironic wink, the volume analyses in retrospect the epoch of European universalism. It focusses on its dialectics, polemically addressing and remembering both 1769 and 1989.

Download or read book Syria the Strength of an Idea written by Karim Atassi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Syrian crisis has confounded political leaders and experts who forecast a rapid fall of the regime. This monumental error of interpretation has had tragic consequences for the unfolding of the crisis and its slide into a frightful civil war with regional and international ramifications. This book looks at Syrian reality in a new light. By analysing twenty-five constitutions and constitutional texts and proposing an innovative classification of the different political regimes that have shaped Syria over the last one hundred years, the author retraces the country's intense history and the persistence of a Syrian model defined by the Founding Fathers. If, on emerging from this war, Syria maintains its unity and gives itself a democratic regime reflecting its society, then the concept of Syria may find a new lease of life and Syria will once again be perceived as an idea full of promises.
