Download or read book Construction d identit et processus d identification written by Sylvester N. Osu and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 2021-07-28 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. * * * This Liber Amicorum, which pays tribute to Gilles de Kerchove, EU counter-terrorism coordinator from 2007 to 2021, takes stock of what has been achieved in this field in recent years and looks at the challenges ahead. After an introduction tracing the recipient’s background, the first part looks at different aspects of cooperation within the European Union, ranging from the European arrest warrant, to the protection of fundamental rights and the role of certain EU institutions or agencies. The second part deals with cooperation between the EU and the rest of the world, both with global organisations and with specific States, such as the United States. The third, cross-cutting part brings together various contributions relating to the Islamic State, the financing of terrorism, victims and new technologies. The book concludes with a fourth part on prevention, the fight against radicalisation, values, freedom of the press and literature. The authors come from various parts of the world and present a wide range of profiles, including prominent political figures, EU officials, academics, magistrates and journalists. The book was coordinated by Dr. Christiane Höhn, Principal Advisor to Gilles de Kerchove, Isabel Saavedra, his Personal Assistant and Prof. Anne Weyembergh, Professor at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB).
Download or read book Ne cherchez pas comprendre dansez seulement written by Mahesse Kolé and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2023-10-22 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when Côte d’Ivoire was experiencing a military-political crisis and was split in two (2002), the Coupé-Décalé appeared as a real innovation in the Ivorian musical universe. It caused a “sensation” with cultural practices, a dress code, choreographic concepts and musical forms that were atypical of the time. While pre-existing genres, such as Reggae, Hip Hop and Zuglou, are positioned as “committed” music, Coupé-Décalé, on the other hand, is in a completely different register: that of bringing joy, setting the mood, forgetting the sad reality of this difficult period. Nearly two decades later, the Coupé-Décalé continues to enjoy great popularity among a community of fans who are sensitive to the ideology promoted and the social practices that derive from it. This study develops a reflection on the Coupé-Décalé, a form of cultural mediation that consolidates a subcultural identity. It aims first to show the pictorial and imagined representations of the youth subculture through musical content, then to examine the actors, practices and interactions that lead to the development of the musical work, and finally, to demonstrate how the public and the producers, through the reception of the music and the identification with the Coupé-Décalé, constitute a subculture. In short, the Coupé-Décalé is a subcultural identity. It specifies a new relationship to politics, to social norms and, above all, a quest for pleasure, endangerment and amusement.

Download or read book This Thing Called Music written by Victoria Lindsay Levine and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-05-21 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most fundamental subject of music scholarship provides the common focus of this volume of essays: music itself. For the distinguished scholars from the field of musicology and related areas of the humanities and social sciences, the search for music itself—in its vastly complex and diverse forms throughout the world—characterizes the lifetime of reflection and writing by Bruno Nettl, the leading ethnomusicologist of the past generation. This Thing Called Music: Essays in Honor of Bruno Nettl salutes not only a great scholar and beloved teacher, but also a thinker whose search for the meaning and ontology of music has exerted a global influence. Editors Victoria Lindsay Levine and Philip V. Bohlman have gathered essays that represent the many dimensions of musical meaning, addressing some of the most critically important areas of music scholarship today. The social formations of musical communities play counterpoint to analytical studies; investigations into musical change and survival connect ethnography to history, offering a collection of essays that can serve as an invaluable resource for the intellectual history of ethnomusicology. Each chapter explores music and its meanings in specific geographic areas—North and South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East—crossing the boundaries of genre, repertory, and style to provide insight into the aesthetic zones of contact between and among the folk, classical, and popular musics of the world. Readers from all disciplines of music scholarship will find in this collection a proper companion in an era of globalization, when the connections that draw musicians and musical practices together are more sweeping than ever. Chapters offer models for detailed analysis of specific musical practices, while at the same time they make possible new methods of comparative study in the twenty-first century, together posing a challenge crucial to all musicians and scholars in search of “this thing called music.”
Download or read book Constructions identitaires et pratiques sociales written by Pierre Savard and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Mapping Worlds written by Rob Kitchin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social and cultural geography is practised by geographers from around the world. However, for various reasons including language and publishing traditions, knowledge of the research being undertaken can often remain confined to those working within those countries. This book draws together, for the first time into one volume, reports of social and cultural geography undertaken in several countries from around the world. It provides an important overview of geographic ideas and traditions, and the history of human geography more generally, allowing comparison between countries and details of key studies and references. As such, the book will be of interest to geographers schooled in different national traditions, and those interested in the production and history of geographic knowledge. Entries are written in both English and the country’s own national language.

Download or read book Muslims and Others written by Jacques Waardenburg and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacques Waardenburg writes about relations between Muslims and adherents of other religions. After illuminating various aspects of Islam from an outside point of view in his volume "Islam" (published in 2002 by de Gruyter) his second volume changes the perspective: The author shows how Muslims perceived non-Muslims - particularly Christianity and "the West", but also Judaism and Asian religions - in many centuries of religious dialogue and tensions. The main focus is on Muslim minorities in Western countries and on religious dialogues of which he provides first-hand knowledge through his participation in several important dialogue meetings. After 50 years of research and personal involvement, Waardenburg aims at a mutual understanding and reconciliation of Islam and other religions, particularly Christianity, both on an international level as well as on a more local level where "old" and "new", Christian and Muslim Europeans live together.
Download or read book Reconceptualizing Teacher Education written by Anne M. Phelan and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection, Canadian scholars articulate a response to their collective concerns about the impact of global policy on teacher education, provoking a far-reaching dialogue about teacher education in and for our times. The first two decades of the new millennium have witnessed unprecedented appraisal, analysis, and educational policy formulations related to teaching (K–12) across the Western world. In turn, teacher education has been greatly impacted, as governments around the world see the reform and management of teacher education as a key component in restructuring education toward greater economic competitiveness. The result has been an unwarranted and undesirable level of standardization. It is vital to the future of teacher education, and concomitantly public education, that we imagine alternatives to the homogenization of the educational experience that globalizing policies install. What is needed are vocabularies that enable educators and teacher educators to discern and articulate educational purposes beyond capital and which focus on the kinds of educational experiences that can help prepare the young to lead good and worthwhile lives. Using lessons learned from the Canadian context, the authors identify and investigate the importance of initial and continuing professional education that fosters teachers’ intellectual freedom and study; advances an informed and critical appreciation of civic particularity and historical circumstance; and cultivates ethical (i.e., pedagogical) engagement with ideas and histories—teachers’ own and their students—as crucial themes of teacher education globally.
Download or read book Reconstructions of Canadian Identity written by Vander Tavares and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2024-04-19 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Re-envisioning multiculturalism in Canada In 1971, Canada became the first nation in the world to officially declare its bilingual and multicultural policies. Reconstructions of Canadian Identity examines what has changed over the past fifty years, highlighting the lived experiences of marginalized Canadians and offering insights into the critical work that lies ahead. Editors Vander Tavares and Maria João Maciel Jorge bring together a wide range of disciplines and perspectives to investigate inclusion and exclusion within the processes, discourses, and practices that forge and frame Canadian identity. Chapters analyze ways current multicultural policies continue to benefit the dominant groups and (further) harm minoritized ones. Exposing the pitfalls of established notions of Canadian identity, this volume moves traditionally othered identities—immigrant, racialized, hybridized, Indigenous, and women—to the forefront. In doing so, it reveals how these identities negotiate and claim legitimacy, arguing for a reconceptualization from the margins that truly fosters diversity and inclusion. Illustrating both the shortcomings of and possibilities for a more inclusive multiculturalism in Canada, Reconstructions of Canadian Identity invites readers to reflect on what it means to be Canadian in the twenty-first century.
Download or read book Cultures in Movement written by Martine Raibaud and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-05 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors to this volume encourage a re-thinking of the very notion of culture by examining the experiences, situations and the representations of those who chose – or were forced – to change cultures from the nineteenth century to the present day. Beyond a simple study of migration, forced or otherwise, this collective work also re-examines the model of integration. As recent entrants into new social settings may be perceived as affecting the previously-accepted social equilibrium, mechanisms encouraging or inhibiting population flows are sometimes put in place. From this perspective, “integration” may become less a matter of internal choice than an external obligation imposed by the dominant political power, in which case “integration” may only be a euphemism for cultural uniformity. The strategies of cultural survival developed as a reaction to such a rising tide of cultural uniformity can be seen as necessary points of departure for an ever-growing shared multiculturalism. A long-term voluntary commitment to make cultural boundaries more flexible and allow a more engaged individual participation in the process of defining the self and finding its place within a culture in movement may represent a key element for cultural cohesion in a globalized world.

This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
