Book English Composition and Style

Download or read book English Composition and Style written by William T. Brewster and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Composition and Style: A Handbook for College Students A general discussion which, among other things, speaks of the purpose and the method of this book, will be found in the accompanying introduction. Since this is intended chiefly for teachers, it is separate from the rest of the book. The latter is for the student, working preferably under direction, and it contains accounts of the theory of writing and exercises for practice. The more important parts are Chapters V-VII, of Part I, Chapters II-IV of Part II, and Chapters II-V of Part III, largely because they give more opportunity for practice. But they cannot wholly be understood without the other chapters. Several citations, notably those on pages ii6-139, I have introduced without the usual form of reference, deeming it best for students to come to some opinion without knowing the authorship. My indebtedness to the many writers of rhetorics from the days of Aristotle to our own immediate year is manifest Many of these are specifically mentioned in foot-notes, but I should also like especially to name, as books that have been most useful to me, the late Adams Sherman Hill's The Principles of Rhetoric, Professor Barrett Wendell's English Com position, the late Hammond Lamont's English Composition, Professor George P.Baker's The Principles of Argumentation, and Professor Ashley H. Thomdike's The Elements of Rhetoric and Composition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book First Manual of Composition

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Manual of Composition: Designed for Use in the Highest Grammar Grade and the Lower High School Grades Two years ago the writer published a small volume called A First Book in Writing Eng lish. He did so on the hypothesis that all the rhetorical theory necessary for college en trance may best be given in simple form to students in the first two years of the high school, in order that it may later be assimilated by practice. After watching the book in use by pupils of very different ages, he believes the hypothesis to be essentially correct. The chief principles of rhetoric can be grasped very early, but only long practice can transform them into a workman's instincts. Book Advanced Latin Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book Advanced Latin Composition Classic Reprint written by H. C. Nutting and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Latin Composition This book is divided into three parts, each of which provides material for a one-hour course throughout the year. The exercises are based upon outlying parts of Caesar and Cicero, unfamiliar to students in the earlier part of their college course. Parts I and II are designed specially for freshman work. They both cover practically the same ground, thus making it possible to use the book in successive years without employing the same exercise twice. In preparing the passages for translation into Latin two ends have been kept in view: first, to test the student's knowledge of forms and syntax at the places where data collected from the work of successive classes has shown the freshman student to be weak; and, second, to illustrate a few of the finer points of composition which cannot be adequately treated in the preparatory school. This latter feature renders the footnotes necessarily rather bulky. The exercises are arranged in a careful sequence, and should be used in the order in which they stand to secure the most satisfactory results. Part III provides suitable work for students who have completed either Part I or Part II. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Practical English Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical English Composition Classic Reprint written by Carolyn M. Gerrish and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical English Composition It is the purpose of this book to accomplish four things for the student: (1) to give him continually increasing power in original composition; (2) to train him in habits of accuracy in mechanical form (spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, etc.); (3) to develop his interest in good literature; and (4) to stimulate his interest in the affairs of the world in which he lives. From the beginning of the book to the end, students are required to do creative work and are trained to select, arrange, and express ideas so as to make the best use of what they know. The method of teaching is inductive. Models are used in such a way as to encourage and to develop original thought and expression. No blind imitation of models is possible if the method of the book is followed. This requires persistent effort along definitely indicated lines. Beginning with very simple work, the exercises gradually increase in difficulty in both subject matter and technical requirement. The assignments for student practice are varied and very extensive, ranging from the practical to the theoretical, from matters of everyday experience to matters of imagination and fancy. The subjects assigned have been taken almost entirely from lists made out by students when asked to hand in subjects in which they were interested and on which they would like to write. Necessarily, these subjects touch all phases of the lives of young people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Modern Composition and Rhetoric Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern Composition and Rhetoric Classic Reprint written by Dana O. Jensen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Composition and Rhetoric The general aim of this book is to give the beginning college student a thorough training in the fundamentals of composition. We have tried to include such theory, fact, and practice as are necessary to competent, clear, and straightforward writing; at the same time we have attempted to make plain to the student how he may express himself as an individual. We have not addressed the professional writer, or even the accomplished amateur, but the person who needs instruction and training before he can perform the requirements of everyday college and post-college life. The particular aim of the book, however, is more specific. In any course and in any textbook there must be some concern for individual differences in students differences in training, in ability, and in personality. But in spite of the varying needs of students there must be some regimentation, as regrettable as regimentation may seem to the instructor who recognizes his students as individuals. This need of basic standardization we have attempted to meet in Part I, which includes those fundamentals of organization, paragraph structure, and sentence structure that every writer must command before clear communication is possible. Such details as the, student may be sup posed to have learned before entering college, and such as he will need to know only for special occasions, we have placed in appendixes. Part I is addressed primarily to the average student. Part II deals with the various special kinds of writing which most students will at one time or another have to do. It is thus designed to furnish the next major step in the training of the average student who has mastered the more fundamental principles outlined in Part I. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book in Composition, for the Use of Schools: On an Entirely New Plan IT is believed, that nothing like this book, either in design or arrangement, has ever been issued from the press. All other elementary works in this department, proceed upon a plan so different from the one herein proposed, that the author cannot be said to have trespassed upon ground already occupied. While, in other branches of education, the idea of gradual progress has been recognized and carried out, in this, which more than any demands the most careful application of the idea, it seems to have been entirely overlooked. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Composition As the Greeks thus distinguished by its method a speech of Demosthenes from a drama of Sophocles, we may distin guish not only Bacon's essays from Shakspere's plays, but The Imitation of Christ from Pilgrim's Progress, or a speech on prison reform from Dickens's Little Dorrit. For the two fold division underlies a great variety of literary forms. It has no reference to details, as of prose or verse. Scott's stories, whether in prose or in verse, all alike come under the second head. Except in a few essays, Scott was always a writer of images. Indeed, the classification is not prima rily of literary forms, but rather 'of literary method, of com position in the most general sense. In this broad sense, most prose writing and speaking may be classified either as discussion or as story. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Written and Oral Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book Written and Oral Composition Classic Reprint written by Martin W. Sampson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Written and Oral Composition The authors add a volume to the many texts on English composition, in the hope of meeting fairly the first great need of the high school student who is beginning to learn to compose. That need is to think in terms of good com position, - to regard the spoken or written theme as a whole, and not as a collection of separate sentences. The high school student is not yet mature, but still less is he a child, and he learns to write well and to speak well mainly by learning to think. This book seeks constantly to appeal to his intelligence; first, by giving him subjects within his grasp, and second, by having faith that his grasp means brains as well as memory. An old mistake was to give the student tasks beyond his power; a new mistake is to hold him too closely to the commonplace. The present authors try a middle course, but they have never felt themselves obliged to reach that middle course by exactly bisecting the difference between the two ex tremes. Much more stress than usual is laid upon oral composition, for the plain reason that much defective writing is due to defective speaking. Book Greek Prose Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book Greek Prose Composition Classic Reprint written by Henry Carr Pearson and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-04-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Book Written English

Download or read book Written English written by John Erskine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Written English: A Guide to the Rules of Composition This little book pretends to be in no sense a text book of grammar or rhetoric. It tries to give as briefly as possible such hints and reminders as all but the most experienced writers are sometimes glad to have. We have sought, not to treat the subject exhaustively, but on the contrary to omit all but the matters that in practice prove trouble some. A certain mass of errors, due to carelessness as much as anything else, appear in the writing of every Freshman class; and we have assumed that those same errors probably trouble the aver age graduate of the High Schools, whether he is a college student or not. We hope to give here the rules that cover these errors, and Such other hints as may smooth the path of the average writer. Download or read book Essentials of English Composition Classic Reprint written by Horace S. Tarbell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of English Composition This book is designed for grammar schools and the lower classes in high schools. It may also be profitably used in ungraded schools, and for the private study of those who are desirous of personal improvement in the art of writing. It is complete in its treatment of the practical features that underlie the art of composition. To put complete and connected thoughts upon paper should not be more difficult than to express such thoughts orally. Each form of expression has its difficulties and its advantages. Training in oral speech precedes that in written speech, and, from our greater familiarity with the oral form of expression, it seems the more natural. There is much to be gained, however, from the use of the pen. If the writer fails. To express his thoughts clearly at first, he can change and improve what has been written. The painstaking construction of one's own forms of expression is a chief condition of improvement. A book designed to teach the art of writing must furnish both instruction as to the principles on which good writing is based and exercises adapted to training in the art of speaking and writing. Book College Life Its Conditions and Problems

Download or read book College Life Its Conditions and Problems written by Maurice G. Fulton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Life, Its Conditions and Problems: A Selection of Essays for Use in College Writing Courses The remainder of the book deals with the student interests outside of the curriculum, such as general reading, recreation and athletics, college spirit, college morals, student government, etc. The second value that this material has for the course in English composition is that it enables the instructor to make the course incite to thinking and to intellectual expansion. In the composition course it seems wise to emphasize ideas, rather than literary models or set exercises, by allowing the student to encounter fresh and stimulating thoughts, which one may adopt and apply to one's own experience, or which one may combat or modify in accordance with individual conviction. To throw the emphasis upon formal matters is unwise and is an illustration of what Huxley has described as making the student practice the use of knife, fork, and spoon without giving him a particle of meat. But if the student is provided before he writes with the materials of thought in the form of some reading which, firmly thought out and clearly expressed, stimulates to thinking, the ways and means of clear expression assume new significance to him. The field of college life offers many inviting subjects for writing and oral discussion which are well within the comprehension and experience of the student. The selections in this book are therefore intended as a body of stimulating material. Though suggestiveness in point of ideas has been the main criterion of choice, these selections will serve well also as models of clear, direct, and incisive modern English. The selections have not been brought together for the purpose of representing the different types of discourse, but simply to set the student to the general task of correct and effective writing. It so happens, however, that these selections will readily serve as a basis for the expository and argumentative writing which, in most colleges, is the fundamental part of the first-year course in writing. Book Effective Expression

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effective Expression: A Textbook on Composition and Rhetoric for the Four Years of High School and the First Year of College In Narration, we have emphasized motivation, for it is the secret of plot construction, and have dwelt at length upon short-story writing and upon dramatiza tion, because they furnish practice in handling situa tions. In Description, we have, as our definition shows, made more than is customary of the emotional point of view and of informal description, for they are both vital to a real understanding of the subject. We have treated Exposition as the commonest form of discourse and tried to make it eminently practical by applying it to literary criticism, the making of abstracts, ex plaining situations in novels, and to class recitations. In Argumentation, we have distinguished between the informal and formal types, and have given sufficient logical tests to insure facility in determining what con stitutes real evidence, such as may be offered as proof. We have especially emphasized the need and the method of finding the main issues, which is the vital thing in argumentation. While we have used the terms Narration, Description, Exposition, and Argumentation, we have been careful to point out that they are academic distinctions used to classify the various forms of the finished product, and that they are not to be used mechanically, nor to be considered like the water-tight compartments of a ship with no inter-communication.
