Book The Afterlife of Used Things

Download or read book The Afterlife of Used Things written by Ariane Fennetaux and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recycling is not a concept that is usually applied to the eighteenth century. “The environment” may not have existed as a notion then, yet practices of re-use and transformation obviously shaped the early-modern world. Still, this period of booming commerce and exchange was also marked by scarcity and want. This book reveals the fascinating variety and ingenuity of recycling processes that may be observed in the commerce, crafts, literature, and medicine of the eighteenth century. Recycling is used as a thought-provoking means to revisit subjects such as consumption, the new science, or novel writing, and cast them in a new light where the waste of some becomes the luxury of others, clothes worn to rags are turned into paper and into books, and scientific breakthroughs are carried out in old kitchen pans.

Book Voltaire

Download or read book Voltaire written by Ian Davidson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive biography of Voltaire's life—from his scandalous love affairs and political maneuverings to his inspired philosophy. We think of Voltaire as the archetypal figure of the enlightenment; in his own time he was also the most famous and controversial figure in Europe. This dazzling new biography celebrates his extraordinary life. Davidson tells the whole, rich story of Voltaire’s life (1694-1778): his early imprisonment in the Bastille; exile in England and his mastery of English; an obsession with money, of which he made a huge amount; a scandalous love life; a long exile on the borders of Switzerland; his human-rights campaigns and his triumphant return to Paris to die there as celebrity extraordinaire. Throughout all of this, Voltaire’s life was always informed by two things: a belief in the essential value of toleration in the face of fanaticism; and in the right of every man to think and say what he liked. It is rare to have such a vivid portrait of a great man.

Book Joan of Arc

Download or read book Joan of Arc written by Frances Gies and published by HarperCollins Publishers. This book was released on 1981 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Joan of Arc (French: Jeanne d'Arc, IPA: [{7f0292}an dak]; ca. 1412[4] ? 30 May 1431), nicknamed "The Maid of Orléans" (French: La Pucelle d'Orléans), is a folk heroine of France and a Roman Catholic saint. She was born a peasant girl in what is now eastern France. Claiming divine guidance, she led the French army to several important victories during the Hundred Years' War, which paved the way for the coronation of Charles VII of France. She was captured by the Burgundians, transferred to the English in exchange for money, put on trial by the pro-English Bishop of Beauvais Pierre Cauchon for charges of "insubordination and heterodoxy", and was burned at the stake for heresy when she was 19 years old. Twenty-five years after her execution, an inquisitorial court authorized by Pope Callixtus III examined the trial, pronounced her innocent, and declared her a martyr.[6] Joan of Arc was beatified in 1909 and canonized in 1920."--Wikipedia.
