This book was released on 2016-01-24 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Kavitawali' is the legendary story of Lord Ram that was written by saint-poet Goswami Tulsidas as part of his Trilogy on Lord Ram's life and time-popularly known as 'Ramayan'. The other two books in this Trilogy are Geetawali and the epic Ram Charit Manas. Each of the three books of the Trilogy is a masterpiece in itself. The other two books would also be made available by this author as soon as they are ready for publication. 'Kavitawali' narrates the story of Lord Ram in a poetic style that is called 'Kavitta' in Hindi. It is basically fine and excellent poetry in one of its best forms, being written as it is in Tulsidas' unique style of narration that is at once lucid, enchanting and captivating for the mind. He has employed all the skills and mastery of words that he is so famous for. The probable reason of his writing Kavitawali (and for that matter Geetawali as well, besides, of course, the epic Ram Charit Manas) is perhaps he wished to narrate the excellent story of Lord Ram in from different angles and employing different styles of poetic composition so that the story as a whole becomes exceedingly enchanting, fascinating and beautiful as it could now be read and recited in various styles and tones to suit every mood and liking of the reader. Further, it helped Tulsidas to describe many aspects of the story which could not be possibly highlighted sufficiently in one book alone due to various restrictions-such as for instance the restrictions imposed by the style selected for the composition, or the flow of the narration, or the limitations of pages-could be overcome in the next book. So, Kavitawali helped Tulsidas to express himself better and more articulately because now he could focus his attention more to highlight in very expressive terms certain parts or aspects of the epic story as well as to fill in certain gaps that he couldn't probably do in the other two books of the Trilogy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life of a Text offers a vivid portrait of one community's interaction with its favorite text—the epic Ramcaritmanas—and the way in which performances of the epic function as a flexible and evolving medium for cultural expression. Anthropologists, historians of religion, and readers interested in the culture of North India and the performance arts will find breadth of subject, careful scholarship, and engaging presentation in this unique and beautifully illustrated examination of Hindi culture. The most popular and influential text of Hindi-speaking North India, the epic Ramcaritmanas is a sixteenth century retelling of the Ramayana story by the poet Tulsidas. This masterpiece of pre-modern Hindi literature has always reached its largely illiterate audiences primarily through oral performance including ceremonial recitation, folksinging, oral exegesis, and theatrical representation. Drawing on fieldwork in Banaras, Lutgendorf breaks new ground by capturing the range of performance techniques in vivid detail and tracing the impact of the epic in its contemporary cultural context.

Download or read book The Wrestler s Body written by Joseph S. Alter and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1992-08-03 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wrestler's Body tells the story of a way of life organized in terms of physical self-development. While Indian wrestlers are competitive athletes, they are also moral reformers whose conception of self and society is fundamentally somatic. Using the insights of anthropology, Joseph Alter writes an ethnography of the wrestler's physique that elucidates the somatic structure of the wrestler's identity and ideology. Young men in North India may choose to join an akhara, or gymnasium, where they subject themselves to a complex program of physical and moral fitness. Alter's first-hand description of each detail of the wrestler's regimen offers a unique perspective on South Asian culture and society. Wrestlers feel that moral reform of Indian national character is essential and advocate their way of life as an ideology of national health. Everyone is called on to become a wrestler and build collective strength through self-discipline.

Book excerpt: The Hanuman Chalisa authored by Goswami Tulsidas is one of the most popular Hindu devotional hymns. The 'Mahaviri' Hindi commentary (1984) by Swami Rambhadracharya has been acclaimed as the best treatise on the Hanuman Chalisa. This book presents an annotated and expanded English translation of the 'Mahaviri' commentary by Nityanand Misra. Each of the 43 verses of the 'Hanuman Chalisa' is explained in three stages. The first phase being a word-for-word translation to help the reader understand the literal meaning of each word in a verse. The second is a simple English translation of each verse. This third and final phase is an informed commentary on the true meaning of the verse, explaining the deep essence of the text with citations from authoritative Hindu scriptures (the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Gita, etc.) and other works of Goswami Tulsidas. All such citations are also translated into English. Following the commentary, Misra also provides five useful appendices for advanced readers. These include more than 120 endnotes (annotations), a detailed note on the prosody and rhythm of all the verses for chanters, the musical notation of the traditional melody of the Hanuman Chalisa for devotional singers and instrumentalists, and two alphabetical indexes for all words and verses used in the hymn. The book is a must-have for reciters and singers of the Hanuman Chalisa who want to understand the deep essence of Tulsidas's timeless hymn to Hanuman. It targets laypersons as well as scholarly readers. The design of the book, including font sizes and line spacing, is suitable for the elderly as well. The book has reached thousands of readers across the globe and has been praised as “the most comprehensive guide to the Hanuman Chalisa available in English”. It has been loved by readers for not only its scholarship and research, but also for its beautiful production, aesthetic typeface, attractive layout, and excellent footnotes and appendices.
