Book Foundations of French Syntax

Download or read book Foundations of French Syntax written by Michael Allan Jones and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-09-12 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for students, this detailed analysis of the principal areas of French grammar combines the insights of modern linguistic theory with those of more traditional grammarians. Theory is placed firmly in the service of description and analysis, and students are guided to an understanding of the French language which will complement the information offered by traditional reference grammars. The book includes discussion of verbs and verb phrases, voice, tense and mood, the noun phrase and pronouns, prepositions and variations in sentence-structure. The author pays special attention to those areas of French grammar which pose difficulties for an English-speaking reader. Each chapter is followed by a set of problems and exercises, and by a useful guide to further reading. Foundations of French Syntax assumes no prior knowledge of linguistics, and will appeal to students and teachers of linguistics, French and other Romance languages.

Book Grammaire des pr dicats complexes les constructions nom verbe Collection langues et syntaxe

Download or read book Grammaire des pr dicats complexes les constructions nom verbe Collection langues et syntaxe written by SAMVELIAN Pollet and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Case Suspension and Binary Complement Structure in French

Download or read book Case Suspension and Binary Complement Structure in French written by Julia Herschensohn and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adopting the theoretical framework of the minimalist program, this study of syntactic limitations on complement configuration investigates the link between thematic external arguments and case. Using evidence from pronominal, psychological experiencer, and inalienable constructions, it argues that both accusative and dative are structural cases in French and that this duality is reflected in a parallel limit on argument projection. Larson's single complement hypothesis, which allows a maximum of two internal arguments, provides the theoretical justification for this proposal. The testing ground for the binary hypothesis is a group of nonthematic subject constructions involving undative as well as unaccusative verbs, linking, according to Burzio's generalization, case suspension and lack of an internal argument. The investigation of these constructions and those involving partitive case provides not only a theoretically significant contribution to our understanding of grammar, but also a motivated explanation for a number of empirical problems in French.

Book The Grammar of Raising and Control

Download or read book The Grammar of Raising and Control written by William D. Davies and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Grammar of Raising and Control surveys analyses across a range of theoretical frameworks from Rosenbaum's classic Standard Theory analysis (1967) to current proposals within the Minimalist Program, and provides readers with a critical understanding of these, helping them in the process to develop keen insights into the strengths and weaknesses of syntactic arguments in general. Distills a very successful graduate course in syntax from two prominent figures in the field, covering analyses from a range of theoretical frameworks. Provides readers with an understanding of the various perspectives represented in generative syntax, using a particular class of grammatical constructions as a means of examining the evolution of syntactic theory over the last thirty years. Helps students to develop keen insights into the strengths and weaknesses of syntactic arguments. Includes excerpts from six important works that allow students to familiarize themselves with the original literature while also providing discussion of the theoretical context in which they were written.
