Book Local Management of Schools

Download or read book Local Management of Schools written by Rosalind Levačić and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1990, headteachers and school governors in England and Wales have had extensive powers to manage school budgets and are responsible for all of a school's resource needs including staff. As the school budget is dependent on pupil numbers and parents now have more choice over which school their children will attend, local management has had profound effects on how schools are managed and resourced. The book presents original empirical research on local management and concludes that while schools are now able to use resources more efficiently there is little evidence to support the government's claim that local management plays a key role in raising standards of teaching and learning.

Using the lens of gender, Jane Martin reassesses the gendered nature of the modern history of education and provides an overview of intertwined aspects of education, society, politics and power. Its organisation is user friendly, providing accessible information with regard to chronologies of legislation and key events to reflect constancy and change, whilst ‘mapping’ the larger political, economic, social and cultural contexts, making it ideal for use as a textbook or a resource for teachers and students.
