Book Competition and Stability in Banking

Download or read book Competition and Stability in Banking written by Xavier Vives and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distinguished economist examines competition, regulation, and stability in today's global banks Does too much competition in banking hurt society? What policies can best protect and stabilize banking without stifling it? Institutional responses to such questions have evolved over time, from interventionist regulatory control after the Great Depression to the liberalization policies that started in the United States in the 1970s. The global financial crisis of 2007–2009, which originated from an oversupply of credit, once again raised questions about excessive banking competition and what should be done about it. Competition and Stability in Banking addresses the critical relationships between competition, regulation, and stability, and the implications of coordinating banking regulations with competition policies. Xavier Vives argues that while competition is not responsible for fragility in banking, there are trade-offs between competition and stability. Well-designed regulations would alleviate these trade-offs but not eliminate them, and the specificity of competition in banking should be accounted for. Vives argues that regulation and competition policy should be coordinated, with tighter prudential requirements in more competitive situations, but he also shows that supervisory and competition authorities should stand separate from each other, each pursuing its own objective. Vives reviews the theory and empirics of banking competition, drawing on up-to-date analysis that incorporates the characteristics of modern market-based banking, and he looks at regulation, competition policies, and crisis interventions in Europe and the United States, as well as in emerging economies. Focusing on why banking competition policies are necessary, Competition and Stability in Banking examines regulation's impact on the industry's efficiency and effectiveness.

Book Competition Policy for Modern Banks

Download or read book Competition Policy for Modern Banks written by Mr.Lev Ratnovski and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional bank competition policy seeks to balance efficiency with incentives to take risk. The main tools are rules guiding entry/exit and consolidation of banks. This paper seeks to refine this view in light of recent changes to financial services provision. Modern banking is largely market-based and contestable. Consequently, banks in advanced economies today have structurally low charter values and high incentives to take risk. In such an environment, traditional policies that seek to affect the degree of competition by focusing on market structure (i.e. concentration) may have limited effect. We argue that bank competition policy should be reoriented to deal with the too-big-to-fail (TBTF) problem. It should also focus on the permissible scope of activities rather than on market structure of banks. And following a crisis, competition policy should facilitate resolution by temporarily allowing higher concentration and government control of banks.

Book Bank Control of Large Corporations in the United States

Download or read book Bank Control of Large Corporations in the United States written by David M. Kotz and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Truly a distinguished piece of work, based on new data that had not been analyzed before. There is an excellent combination of historical perspective, conscientious examination of a great mass of data, and penetrating analysis." --Robert Aaron Gordon, Charter Member of the Brookings Panel on Economic Activity "Contends that since the Second World War, a small number of 'giant, well-established' banks in a few major cities have re-emerged as the major group that controls large corporations. Places the financial control thesis in historical perspective from the Civil War to the present and then examines the control of the two hundred largest U.S. corporations in 1967-69 in terms of owner control, financial control, and no identified center of control. Also comments on the means of exercising control. ... the author finds that a substantial portion of the largest nonfinancial corporations in 1967-69 were under the control of financial institutions; the control is exercised through the ownership of stock and the role of the bankers as creditors of the corporations." --Journal of Economic Literature "Recent empirical evidence, made available through congressional hearings, reveals that large banking groups are exercising substantial influence over nonfinancial corporations. This is accomplished through stockholdings, creditor relationships, and directorship ties. In this excellent historical statistical analysis, Katz assesses the extent and impact of such control in a competitive economy." --Library Journal This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Book Financial Opening Deposit Insurance and Risk in a Model of Banking Competition

Download or read book Financial Opening Deposit Insurance and Risk in a Model of Banking Competition written by Tito Cordella and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1998-06 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whereas in the past, regulators aimed at limiting disruptive competition as away of promoting sound banking practices, current approaches tend to rely more on market forces on the belief that competition, by improving efficiency and reducing costs, not only leads to a better allocation of resources, but also limits the vulnerability of the banking sector to adverse shocks.1 Thus, while still centered around bank solvency issues, the new regulatory framework fosters competition in the banking sector through the elimination of credit and interest rate controls, despecialization of banks, and opening of the domestic financial markets to international competition.2

Book International Evidence on Government Support and Risk Taking in the Banking Sector

Download or read book International Evidence on Government Support and Risk Taking in the Banking Sector written by Mr.Luis Brandão Brandao Marques and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Government support to banks through the provision of explicit or implicit guarantees affects the willingness of banks to take on risk by reducing market discipline or by increasing charter value. We use an international sample of bank data and government support to banks for the periods 2003-2004 and 2009-2010. We find that more government support is associated with more risk taking by banks, especially during the financial crisis (2009-10). We also find that restricting banks' range of activities ameliorates the moral hazard problem. We conclude that strengthening market discipline in the banking sector is needed to address this moral hazard problem.
