The CBFE allows therapists and students to evaluate the fieldwork experience in a variety of settings. It provides faculty members with a cumulative record of student competency acquisitions ensuring readiness for entry to practice. The CBFE captures current thinking in evaluation by basing student assessment on seven competency areas rather than a long list of skills. The competencies include: practice knowledge, clinical reasoning, facilitating change, professional interactions, communication, professional development, and performance management. Book Clinical Fieldwork Manual

Download or read book Clinical Fieldwork Manual written by Guerdy Jeanty and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The occupational therapy profession is currently experiencing a severe decline in the number of clinical fieldwork settings and fieldwork educators willing to supervise students who will become the future occupational therapists (OTs). The unwillingness of occupational therapists to act as mentors or fieldwork educators for occupational therapy students has been increasingly detrimental to the profession and has begun to create a vicious cycle of negative effects in the United States and globally. Fieldwork education is the element that bridge students from classrooms to service delivery settings. There are few students that describe the factors influencing OTs' disinclination to serve as fieldwork educators (FWEs). Ten out of 20 studies have considered the barriers and benefits for FWEs to provide mentorship for level II OT students to decrease this fieldwork educational crisis. These studies have expounded on factors explicating FWEs willingness to supervise OT level II students and the need to increase fieldwork education opportunities for the students. Personal and professional factors, including students' lack of foundational documentation skills, communication skills, ethics, and lack of readiness to particiapte in practical clinical skills have influenced FWEs willingness to accept students. Other factors have included academic and facilities constraints. These identifiable factors are such as physical supports and resources, time allotment in the clinician's schedule, self-assessment tools for students and FWEs were cited in many of the studies. Detailed fieldwork manuals aligned with practice objective were considered vital also. Fieldwork education is a catalyst in closing the existing gap between theory and practice and it gives OT students opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge to clinical practice. FWEs have stated that even witht he decline in clinical fieldwork settings, barriers in the form of the lack of necessary resources available to FWEs will prevent them from assuming their role. The fieldwork manual will provide FWEs with resources and guidelines to evaluate students' performance and to maximize their educational experiences during the fieldwork placement. The fieldwork manual will also provide a thorough background in relevant policies, procedures, and processes to assist OT students to develop into a confident entry level practitioners.

Book The Influence of Competency Ratings on the Overall Score microform an Examination of the CBFE OT

Download or read book The Influence of Competency Ratings on the Overall Score microform an Examination of the CBFE OT written by Jill Stier and published by National Library of Canada = Bibliothèque nationale du Canada. This book was released on 2004 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Competency Based Fieldwork Evaluation for Occupational Therapists (CBFE-OT) is used to evaluate students' performance during clinical placements. Clinical educators supervising the students assign competency ratings, plus an overall pass/fail decision. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into how clinical educators determine the overall score and make the pass/fail decision. The relationships among the competency scores, the overall score, and the pass/fail decision were explored through analyses of CBFE-OT scores and interviews with clinical educators. The competency scores for Clinical Reasoning, Communication, Professional Development, and Facilitating Change were the strongest predictors of the overall score, accounting for more than 90% of the variance in both midterm and final overall scores. In contrast, many of the clinical educators reported giving Clinical Reasoning, Communication, and Practice Knowledge more weight and Professional Development less weight. Factors affecting the competency scores, the overall scores, and the pass/fail decisions are also described.

Book Occupational Therapy Practice Framework Domain and Process

Download or read book Occupational Therapy Practice Framework Domain and Process written by Aota and published by AOTA Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As occupational therapy celebrates its centennial in 2017, attention returns to the profession's founding belief in the value of therapeutic occupations as a way to remediate illness and maintain health. The founders emphasized the importance of establishing a therapeutic relationship with each client and designing an intervention plan based on the knowledge about a client's context and environment, values, goals, and needs. Using today's lexicon, the profession's founders proposed a vision for the profession that was occupation based, client centered, and evidence based--the vision articulated in the third edition of the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process. The Framework is a must-have official document from the American Occupational Therapy Association. Intended for occupational therapy practitioners and students, other health care professionals, educators, researchers, payers, and consumers, the Framework summarizes the interrelated constructs that describe occupational therapy practice. In addition to the creation of a new preface to set the tone for the work, this new edition includes the following highlights: a redefinition of the overarching statement describing occupational therapy's domain; a new definition of clients that includes persons, groups, and populations; further delineation of the profession's relationship to organizations; inclusion of activity demands as part of the process; and even more up-to-date analysis and guidance for today's occupational therapy practitioners. Achieving health, well-being, and participation in life through engagement in occupation is the overarching statement that describes the domain and process of occupational therapy in the fullest sense. The Framework can provide the structure and guidance that practitioners can use to meet this important goal.
