Book Comparisons of Perceptions of North Carolina Community College Chief Academic Officers and Faculty on Codes of Conduct

Download or read book Comparisons of Perceptions of North Carolina Community College Chief Academic Officers and Faculty on Codes of Conduct written by Daniel Sawyer Mayo and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of ethical standards by institutions of higher education has been in part a response to real and perceived unethical behaviors on the part of faculty members. Though institutional codes of ethics are not required by North Carolina Community College System colleges, eleven of the 58 colleges have adopted and published codes. This qualitative study examines how those codes are perceived by the Chief Academic Officers (CAO) and fulltime faculty members. The study collected responses through face-to-face interviews with three CAOs and 17 faculty members. The interview questions focused on awareness, understanding, and internalization of the published code of ethics. The structured questions were designed by the author and were based on literature and relevant studies. The creation or adoption of the code of ethics at their respective colleges was in response to internal issues or external pressures. The CAOs in this study had a key role in developing and implementing the code at their respective colleges, but they had not fully maximized employment and integration of the code into the college culture. The findings indicated that faculty and CAOs vary in perceptions of purpose and utility of the code. The findings also reveal that among the faculty participants in this study, there may be a superficial awareness of the code. Health Science faculty member were found to have a strong association with the codes of their professional organizations.

Book The Managerial Roles of Community College Chief Business Officers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation examines the managerial roles and organizational status of the chief business officer in North Carolina community colleges, with the intended purpose of better understanding how the roles are performed. This study is conceptually framed with the managerial role theory of Baker, which was based on the work of Mintzberg. As a qualitative research study, interviews developed through the constant comparison method were conducted with six community college chief business officers (CBOs) in North Carolina, based on the following research questions: 1. How do CBOs perceive their managerial roles? 2. How do the perceptions of the CBOs correspond to the perceptions of the president and chief academic officer in their respective college? 3. How do CBOs perceive their place and status in their college? 4. How do the CBOs feel their roles and place in their college have changed over the course of their tenure in the position? The study's results, triangulated through document analysis and interviews with the CBOs' respective presidents and chief academic officers, show the perceived roles the CBOs performed and their status in their colleges. Labels for the roles were initially based on Baker's model and modified by the descriptions of the CBOs, who saw their roles as divisional or institutional, with a hierarchy of roles in each category and sub-categories of peripheral roles, variable roles, and core roles. Resource manager, liaison, problem solver, monitor and information clearinghouse were identified as core to both the divisional and institutional roles, with negotiator, visionary, ambassador, and advocate seen as peripheral roles, while the CBO was not found to be an agent of institutional change. Experience and longevity were identified as factors that positively affected the CBO's status, while also increasing the importance of the advisor role. Implications from this study include opportunities to expand the study of the CBO position and functions, an.

Book Effects of Gender on North Carolina Community College Boards of Trustees Perceptions of Community College Presidents

Download or read book Effects of Gender on North Carolina Community College Boards of Trustees Perceptions of Community College Presidents written by Cynthia Dean and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this causal-comparative study was to compare the effects of gender on the perceptions that members of the boards of trustees of community colleges have of community college presidents. This study was guided by two research questions; the first one comparing the participants' perceptions of the male and female leader with the leader's gender acting as the sole independent variable; the second one examining the interaction effect of the participant's gender and the leader's gender on the participant's perception of the leader. Twelve boards of trustees within the North Carolina Community College System self-selected to participate. Participants read a brief vignette depicting a community college president exhibiting a transformational leadership style then evaluated that leader using the three Outcomes of Leadership subscales of the MLQ - 5X Short: extra effort (EE), effectiveness (EFF), and satisfaction (SAT). Half the boards of trustees received a vignette and survey depicting a male leader and half received a vignette and survey depicting a female leader. One hundred forty-seven surveys were distributed. Ninety-four surveys were returned. Data analyzed using MANOVAs and ANOVA revealed that, while both male and female participants rated the female president lower than the male president on all three subscales, the difference was not statistically significant; resulting in a failure to reject all null hypotheses.
