Book Comparison of Sampler Collection Efficiency Measurements Using a Polydisperse Solid Aerosol and a Monodisperse Liquid Aerosol

Download or read book Comparison of Sampler Collection Efficiency Measurements Using a Polydisperse Solid Aerosol and a Monodisperse Liquid Aerosol written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was conducted to determine the merits of using a single test of a polydisperse solid aerosol in place of multiple tests of monodisperse liquid aerosols in the characterization of aerosol sampling systems. The polydisperse aerosol chosen was an aluminum oxide (Al2O3) commercial abrasive. Analysis of the Al2O3 particles was by a Coulter Particle Size Analyzer. The monodisperse aerosols were fluorescent oleic acid droplets generated by a vibrating orifice aerosol generator (VOAG). Analysis of the fluorescent monodisperse particles was by UV fluorometry. The results show that over the 2-6 micron size range there is sufficiently good agreement between the rapid polydisperse solid aerosol method and the labor intensive liquid monodisperse aerosol method to warrant the use of the polydisperse test as a rapid screening device. Above 6 microns, the solid particles show evidence of bounce and re-entrainment into the aerosol flow. In turn, this results in a higher than expected sampling efficiency for solid particles for the particular aerosol sampler tested.

Book Atmospheric and Biological Environmental Monitoring

Download or read book Atmospheric and Biological Environmental Monitoring written by Young Kim and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-04 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extent of harmful effects of pollution on atmospheric, terrestrial and aquatic environments can be translated into extreme temperature changes, dirty air, clean water shortages, and increased incidence of toxicity that harms every life on earth. Within a lifetime, our environment is changing drastically. Much of the information of environmental pollution impacts needs to be studied, from the mechanism of toxic nanoparticles on the molecular level to the detection of trace gases on the satellite perspective. It is therefore essential to develop advanced monitoring techniques, e- cient process technologies and health impact assessment tools to ?ll the gaps in our scienti?c knowledge. This edition of “Atmospheric and Biological Environmental Monitoring” is a handful of recent developments and techniques from environmental scientists in well-diversi?ed ?elds. These collections of manuscripts are extracts from the recently concluded “7th International Symposium on Advanced Environmental Monitoring” organized by the ADvanced Environmental Monitoring and Research Center (ADEMRC), Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), Korea and held on February 25–28, 2008 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The three parts highlight important aspects of emerging environmental monitoring technologies: Atmospheric Environment, Contaminants Control Process, and Environmental Toxicity Asse- ment. Observational tools presented in the ?rst part ranges from in-situ measurements to satellite remote sensing for atmospheric monitoring. Highlighted in the second part is the recently developed water quality monitoring system for lake strati?cation and membrane technologies for detection and removal of contaminants. Lastly, toxicity monitoring of endocrine disruptors and nanoparticles are highlighted in the third part with new discoveries.

  • Author : Dominique Thomas
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2016-11-30

  • Pages : 228 pages

Download or read book Aerosol Filtration written by Dominique Thomas and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filtration of aerosols is omnipresent in our daily lives, in areas as diverse as health, the protection of people and the environment, and air treatment inside buildings. However, the collection of particles within a filter media is not, contrary to popular belief, linked to a simple screen effect. The phenomena involved are much more complex and require the consideration of aerosol interactions, filter media and process conditions to select the best fiber filter for a given application. Aerosol Filtration, book for students, hygiene or process engineers, fibrous media manufacturers, designers, and filtration system suppliers or users addresses the filtration of aerosols in six chapters. These chapters cover physics and aerosol characterization, the fibrous media, and efficiency and filter clogging by solid or liquid aerosols, with special attention to the filtration of the nanoparticles. - Analyses the behavior of fibrous media against solid and liquid aerosols - Presents models of efficiency and pressure drop - Introduces computing elements for estimating the lifetime of filters - Provides guidance for designing filters and predicting their behavior over time

Book Characterization of the SCP 1021 Aerosol Sampler

Download or read book Characterization of the SCP 1021 Aerosol Sampler written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study characterized the SCP 1021 aerosol sampler (SCP Dynamics, Inc., Minneapolis, MN) at flow rates of 1350 L/min and 1000 L/min. Polydisperse aluminum oxide (Al2O3) particles were used as the solid particles, and the analysis was by Coulter counter. Fluorescent oleic acid particles were used as the monodisperse liquid particles, and the analysis was by fluorometry. The results show that: (1) the sampling efficiency curves for both solid and liquid particles have a peak at approximately 5-6 micrometers, (2) there are no significant differences between the sampling efficiencies of the 1350 and 1000 L/min air flow rates, (3) there is no difference in sampling efficiency between the liquid and solid particles for particles smaller than 6 micrometers; however, large (> 6 micrometers) solid particles bounce when they hit surfaces and are carried by the air to the collection site, resulting in higher sampling efficiency for solid particles, (4) removing the inlet cap and the pre-collector increases the sampling efficiency for particles larger than approximately 4 micrometers, and (5) washing the final stage stem shows that there is significant particle loss in the stem that takes the aerosol to the liquid impaction/bubbling site.

Download or read book Characteristics and Sampling Efficiencies of OMNI 3000 Aerosol Samplers written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Characteristics and aerosol sampling efficiencies of four Omni 3000 aerosol samplers (Sceptor Industries, Inc., Kansas, MO) were determined at ECBC. These samplers have nontraditional wetted-wall cyclones to collect and concentrate aerosols into liquid. The sampling efficiency tests were conducted with monodisperse 0.5-, 1-, 3-, and 5-mum fluorescent polystyrene latex (PSL) microsperes and 2.9-, 5.8-, and 8-mum fluorescent oleic acid particles. The results showed the highest sampling efficiency of 91% for 3-mum particles using the fluorescent PSL microspheres and 70% for 2.9-mum liquid fluorescent oleic acid particles. Omni aerosol samplers have approximately 277 L/min of air flowrate, use 83 W of power, depending on the attachments, and they are small in size. They give approximately 11 mL of liquid after each sampling. These samplers are portable, battery operated, and easy to use and decontaminate.

Book Characteristics and Sampling Efficiencies of Two Personal Aerosol Samplers

Download or read book Characteristics and Sampling Efficiencies of Two Personal Aerosol Samplers written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Characteristics and aerosol sampling efficiencies of two units of the same model Personal Aerosol Sampler (PAS-1 and PAS-2) were characterized at ECBC. These samplers were designed and manufactured by Research Center for Toxicology and Hygienic Regulation of Biopreparations at the Federal Directorate of Medical, Biological and Extreme Problems "Medbioextrem", Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Russia. These samplers have non-traditional wetted wall cyclones to collect and concentrate aerosols into liquid. The samplers are small, portable, and easy to use for decontamination. The sampling efficiency tests were conducted with monodisperse 0.5-, 1-, and 2.1-micrometre fluorescent Polystyrene Latex (PSL) microspheres, and 5.8- and 9.6-micrometre fluorescent oleic acid particles. The air flow rate of PAS-1 was 10 Lpm and the air flow rate of PAS-2 was 9 Lpm. The sample output volumes for PAS-1 and PAS-2 were 1.9 + or - 0.5 cu cm and 2.0 + or - 0.5 cu cm, respectively. The results of PAS-1 and PAS-2 showed the highest sampling efficiency of 72.6% + or - 6.8 and 77.6% for 5.8-micrometre particles, respectively. The power requirements of these samplers will depend on the vacuum pumps used to pull the air through the samplers.
