Book Passive Soil Venting at the Chemical Waste Landfill Site at Sandia National Laboratories Albuquerque New Mexico

Download or read book Passive Soil Venting at the Chemical Waste Landfill Site at Sandia National Laboratories Albuquerque New Mexico written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passive Soil Vapor Extraction was tested at the Chemical Waste Landfill (CWL) site at Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico (SNLIW). Data collected included ambient pressures, differential pressures between soil gas and ambient air, gas flow rates into and out of the soil and concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCS) in vented soil gas. From the differential pressure and flow rate data, estimates of permeability were arrived at and compared with estimates from other studies. Flow, differential pressure, and ambient pressure data were collected for nearly 30 days. VOC data were collected for two six-hour periods during this time. Total VOC emissions were calculated and found to be under the limit set by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). Although a complete process evaluation is not possible with the data gathered, some of the necessary information for designing a passive venting process was determined and the important parameters for designing the process were indicated. More study is required to evaluate long-term VOC removal using passive venting and to establish total remediation costs when passive venting is used as a polishing process following active soil vapor extraction.

Book Characterizing a VOC Site Through On Site Analysis of Soil Gas

Download or read book Characterizing a VOC Site Through On Site Analysis of Soil Gas written by CP. Ardito and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An alternative approach for characterization of sites contaminated by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has been employed at Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico (SNL/NM), in order to characterize a plume from a chemical waste landfill (CWL). The characterization approach is designed to maximize the use of soil gas analysis for definition of the nature and extent of contamination and for validation of the conceptual model of contaminant transport. Comparison of the soil gas data analyzed at an on-site laboratory with those data generated by an EPA-approved analytical laboratory indicates that soil gas data provide a much more representative picture of site conditions. To assist in the validation of our conceptual model of contaminant transport for the CWL, we employed an approach developed at SNL/NM that allows for assessment of nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) through equilibrium testing of the soil gas data.

Book Soil Vapor Versus Discrete Soil Sample Measurements for VOCs in the Near Surface Vadose Zone Feasibility Study

Download or read book Soil Vapor Versus Discrete Soil Sample Measurements for VOCs in the Near Surface Vadose Zone Feasibility Study written by Alan Hewitt and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil vapor samples were taken from 1m beneath the ground surface at 16 different locations. Measured trichloroethene (TCE) in these samples was compared to that obtained for a collocated sample of the soil matrix. The linear slope (0.806) and strong correlation (r2 =0.950) obtained for this comparison of soil vapor (mg TCE/L) to soil mass (mg TCE/kg) concentrations are in good agreement with recent theoretical and empfrical models for this volatile organic compound (VOC) in a low organic carbon soil matrix. This strong relationship suggests that active soil-vapor measurements could be used as an alternative to collecting and analyzing discrete soil samples for establishing both the presence and concentration of VOCs during site characterization and monitoring. Moreover, the techniques and instruments described here are robust, simple to use, and designed to enhance the reliability of soil-gas surveys to characterize vadose zone VOC contamination.
