Furthermore, to take a closer look at the languages comes the differentiation of nominal compounds, adjective compounds and verbal compounds in English and Turkish. The final point is the analysis of the differences and similarities of English and Turkish compounds. With the help of word formation processes we form new words and there are many different processes that lead to many different new words. Compounding is a morphological operation where two or more free morphemes create one complex morpheme. Compounds are very important because they can prevent ambiguity if you just take a closer look at them and there are probably no languages without compounding. Every language is in need of compounded words because of the new inventions and changes in our society everyday. One of the most important and often used word formation processes is compounding. This term paper presents a general overview of the structure of compounds in English and Turkish. Because my mother language is Turkish and I study English, I was really interested in the differences between the English and Turkish language. English is an analytic language and Turkish an agglutinating language therefore it makes it more interesting to analyze.

Its Argument Structure and the Compounding Straitjacket is a comprehensive study of the rich system of nominal compounds in Turkish. This language builds compounds in an enormous diversity of forms and shapes, ranging from extremely simple forms to much more complex and at the same time structurally less transparent types of construction. This diversity is not limited to internal complexity as such, but is also determined by the immense variety in the types of complement the head noun of a compound may take. In linguistic theory it is generally assumed that verbs are lexically coded for a number of arguments. It is also believed by some theoreticians that a noun derived through nominalization has one or more inherited arguments. This book shows on both semantic as well as morphological grounds that for Turkish such a stance is untenable, and also that the enormous range of patterns we find in complements can be accounted for in a relatively simple way by assuming that noun phrases, clauses and sentences can be captured by one unifying notion. This leads to the insight that a seemingly wide variety of constructions form one class as a result of the morphological process of compounding, rather than analyzing them syntactically.Furthermore, this study includes a discussion of the questions: why does Turkish have such an extremely productive system of compound formation that virtually knows no limits with respect to both complexity as well as expressibility, and secondly, how does this system relate to theoretical alternatives such as adjectivization?

It also attempts to clarify EFL teachers’ and students’ views on the underlying ideology and hegemonic practices in globally and locally written EFL textbooks. Studies on the relationship between ideology, hegemony and textbooks in applied linguistics have become more prevalent in recent decades, as the emergence of critical theory, critical pedagogy, and critical thinking skills from the 1920s onwards has led scholars to adopt a more critical perspective towards EFL textbooks, especially with regard to elements of ideology and hegemony. These two terms encompass a plethora of components, ranging from nationalism to religion. At the same time, the importance of metanarratives originating from the tenets of modernism has declined from the 1960s onwards, the assumption being that the world has entered a new age called postmodernism and post-structuralism that emphasizes the role of individuals and rejects efforts to reinforce post-colonialism, the effects of which can be seen in EFL textbooks. Accordingly, taking the elements of ideology and hegemony into account remains a vital aspect in the analysis of EFL textbooks.

Book excerpt: This collection of papers on phrasal compounding is part of a bigger project whose aims are twofold: First, it seeks to broaden the typological perspective by providing data for as many different languages as possible to gain a better understanding of the phenomenon itself. Second, based on these data which clearly show interaction between syntax and morphology it aims to discuss theoretical models which deal with this kind of interaction in different ways. Models like Generative Grammar, assume components of grammar and a clear-cut distinction between the lexicon (often including morphology) and grammar. Other models like construction grammar do not assume such components and are rather based on a lexicon including constructs. A comparison of these models on the basis of this phenomenon on the morphology-syntax interface makes it possible to assess their descriptive and explanatory power.

This volume, left nearly completed at his death and edited posthumously by Joel F. Sherzer, is his last major study of this difficult subject. Swadesh discusses the simple qualities of human speech also present in animal language, and establishes distinctively human techniques of expression by comparing the common features that are found in modern and ancient languages. He treats the diversification of language not only by isolating root words in different languages, but also by dealing with sound systems, with forms of composition, and with sentence structure. In so doing, he demonstrates the evidence for the expansion of all language from a single central area. Swadesh supports his hypothesis by "exhibits" that conveniently present the evidence in tabular form. Further clarity is provided by the use of a suggestive practical phonetic system, intelligible to the student as well as to the professional. The book also contains an Appendix, in which the distinguished ethnographer of language, Dell Hymes, gives a valuable account of the prewar linguistic tradition within which Swadesh did some of his most important work. Morris Swadesh (1909-1967) initiated or was associated with the introduction of many new approaches in scientific linguistics, including phonemics, glottochronology, and new concepts of language evolution. At the time of his death, he was research professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Joel F. Sherzer is a professor in the Departments of Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of Texas at Austin. He is the author, editor, or compiler of many books, including Stories, Myths, Chants, and Songs of the Kuna Indians, Speech Play and Verbal Art, and Verbal Art in San Blas: Kuna Culture through its Discourse.

It investigates whether languages encode events and/or objects at a coarse-grained (e.g., put, glass) as opposed to a fine-grained (e.g., lay, wine glass) level systematically. The level of detail is termed granularity, which is viewed as a cline from fine-grained (semantic specificity) to coarse-grained meaning (semantic generality). Four languages are investigated: German, English, Greek, and Turkish. The study draws on elicited data from a naming task. The verbalization of events is based on event and object descriptions in selected semantic domains. The results reveal significant granularity effects between languages and language types (satellite-framed vs. verb-framed). The study is relevant for scholars interested in linguistic typology, lexical and semantic typology, contrastive linguistics, event representation, psycholinguistics, and cognitive semantics.
