Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advisory groups have played an essential role in improving the school climate and conditions for young adolescents in schools. How middle school decision makers go about the process of designing or re-designing an advisory program needs to be considered. A discussion is presented of the background information that helps define advisories. It describes some essential elements in the design of an advisory program, proposes strategies for planners to use in facilitating decision making, and explores possible future directions and alternative strategies for achieving the goals of advisory programs. Chapter 1 looks at the impetus and chronology of advisory programs. Chapter 2 presents a nomenclature to facilitate a discussion about advisory programs. The decision-making process described in Chapter 3 presents a card-sorting activity that allows the planner to articulate their preconceived notions about potential goals, activities, and outcomes of an advisory program. Chapter 4 suggests that students' need for personal and social guidance may be addressed in ways other than what has traditionally been called advisor/advisee. Considering alternative ways can enhance the processes of planning, collaborative decision making, and creative construction that can be the key to success for a program. (Contains 103 references.) Book School Advisory Programs Impact on the Student teacher Relationship

Download or read book School Advisory Programs Impact on the Student teacher Relationship written by Robert R. Ruch and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study was designed to discover teacher and student perceptions related to the effectiveness of planned activities and instruction as well as to determine the impact that advisory programs have on improving the effectiveness of the student-teacher relationship. The participants were middle school students as well as teachers of grades 6, 7, and 8 in a large, suburban middle school in a school district in southeastern Pennsylvania. This research examined the results based upon the responses of 75 middle school teachers who completed the online survey and 82 seventh and eighth grade students who completed the online survey. The researcher also interviewed 13 teachers and eight students and completed focus groups with a total of 32 students to further assess the teacher and student feelings related to the advisory period. Results of the study indicated over 80% of both groups, teachers and students, believed the advisory period is helpful in strengthening the student-teacher relationship. The advisory teachers viewed themselves and were viewed by students as adults who advisees can count on in the school. There was some differentiation between the perspectives of the students and the teachers in what made advisory effective. There was a large difference between the perspectives of the seventh grade students and the eighth grade students. The majority of eighth graders primarily viewed the advisory time as a time to get work done while most seventh graders viewed this allotted as a time to make connections with each other and the advisory teacher.

Book Student and Teacher Perceptions on the Effectiveness of Advisory Programs at the Secondary Level for Developing and Nurturing Interpersonal Relationships Among Students and Staff

This book was released on 2012 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was designed to analyze the results of an anonymous survey given to students and staff at Liberty North High School. The purpose of the study and the survey was to determine the perceived effectiveness on the advisory program in the school by both teachers and students. Chi square was used to analyze the 125 surveys collected to test the statistical dependence of the research questions posed in the surveys in regards to awareness of the purpose of the program, connectedness to advisor/advisee, opinion on time and topics covered in the program and whether or not the topics and lessons are actually carried through in particular advisory. The findings of this study recommend that though students and teachers feel they have enough time to work in advisory, they still do not feel that they are making the connections that are the primary goal of the advisory program. They feel the need for more focus on post-secondary preparation in advisory as well. This study will delve deeper into these questions and attempt to create a plan to help create an advisory that will be beneficial to all involved.

Book Students Responses to Middle School Advisory Programs

Download or read book Students Responses to Middle School Advisory Programs written by Sarah C. Treworgy and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative case study sought to answer the question "What do eighth grade girls say about the role of advisory programs in their middle school experience?" Five eighth grade girls from two different middle schools were interviewed to determine how advisory groups have played a role in their middle school experiences, as well as what worked well for them in an advisory program. Their responses were coded and grouped based on experiences and along with observation notes were qualitatively analyzed. School experiences related to advisory were community service, inter-grade level friendships, and improved relations with their advisor. All students interviewed thought that advisory was a positive part of their middle school experiences, and feel that it should be a part of every school.

This book was released on 2024-03-25 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there is an extensive body of evidence about the importance of engagement with faculty for undergraduate students, there is a dearth of scholarly attention to the experiences of graduate and professional students. This edited book examines current and future changes to U.S. college and university environments and the ways in which these shifts affect student-faculty interactions and engagement with graduate students. This volume highlights the distinct ways in which graduate students interact with faculty through research opportunities, advising, collaborations, teaching, mentoring, and socialization. This book also offers practical implications and recommendations for higher education faculty, student and academic affairs staff, faculty development professionals, and leaders for fostering effectual student-faculty experiences in graduate education.

Book Suburban Middle School Students Reports of the Social Supports They Receive Through Their School s Advisory Program

Download or read book Suburban Middle School Students Reports of the Social Supports They Receive Through Their School s Advisory Program written by Beth M. Giller and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey method was used to examine suburban middle school students' reports of the social supports they received through their school's advisory program. A widely used middle school practice, advisory program, in this study, referred to a weekly, structured class period (44 minutes) designed deliberately to foster healthy relationships between students and teachers, and students and peers. The school in which the study took place was in the second year of implementing advisory classes. A modified version of the Child and Adolescent Social Support Scale (Malecki, Demaray, & Elliot, 2000) was administered to 580 students in Grades 6 through 8. This self-report questionnaire assesses four different types of social support (i.e., emotional, informational, appraisal, and instrumental), the sources of support (i.e., parents, teachers, classmates, close friends, and school), and the importance students place on that support. Data analyses revealed yielded results similar to previous social support research in finding that younger students perceived they received more social support through advisory class than older Grade 7 or 8 students. Similarly, girls perceived more support than did boys. Overall, participants perceived the most support from their advisory teacher and a close friend in advisory. Finally, students perceived and valued emotional support the most when compared with the other types of social support.

Book Advisory based Perceptions of Transition and Connectedness by First year Middle School Students

Download or read book Advisory based Perceptions of Transition and Connectedness by First year Middle School Students written by Ramona Raines Pence and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this action research-based study was to identify first- year middle school students’ perceptions of the influences of a teacher advisory (TA) program on their transition concerns and connectedness with a teacher before and after their first nine weeks in the middle school. The transition from elementary school to middle school can be difficult for students due to the structural and cultural changes in the middle school organization and the adolescent development that occurs. The use of an advisory group led by a teacher to assist in this transition and connectedness is a program that was the subject of this study. Student perceptions were obtained from quantitative results from a pre-and post-survey and then followed up with qualitative findings from focus group protocol to explore the quantitative results in more depth. The main research question explored was: What are advisory-based students’ perceptions of transition and connectedness in their first-year of middle school? Supporting questions were: To what extent do perceptions of transition concerns and connectedness with a teacher change before and after students enter the middle school? What, if any, gender, age, ethnicity, and feeder school attendance demographic differences exist in these perceptions? What, if any, differences exist between advisory and non-advisory students’ perceptions on their transition concerns and connectedness? The conclusions from the quantitative and qualitative analyses revealed that at the end of nine weeks in the middle school: 1) Transition concerns decreased for both advisory and non-advisory students; 2) Connectedness with a teacher decreased for both advisory and non-advisory students with a higher connectedness for advisory students than non-advisory students; 3) Advisory students expressed a more positive view of advisory teachers than non-advisory students expressed of homeroom teachers; 4) Advisory students overall had a positive perception of the TA program and the TA teacher despite a decrease in connectedness. Implications and recommendations for education personnel are provided.
