Book excerpt: Lateral streambank erosion is a naturally occurring process resulting from fluvial detachment and entrainment, and/or mass wasting leading to the migration of stream channels across their floodplains. Stream systems are inherently connected to their watersheds and as a result, changes within a watershed can greatly alter stream stability, including the rates of lateral channel migration. Geomorphic assessments have been developed by numerous researchers to track and document changes in streambank stability. Some geomorphic assessments have successfully identified unstable streambanks; however, they only provided a current snapshot of the streambanks. Research is needed to determine if geomorphic assessments are capable of accurately predicting long-term changes in streambank migration. The Bank Erosion Hazard Index (BEHI), a geomorphic assessment developed by Rosgen (2001), was used in conjunction with data collected in 2011 and historical data from 1996 by Harmel (1997) along a portion of the Upper Illinois River in Northeastern Oklahoma. Lateral channel migration rates were measured using ESRI ArcGIS10 and aerial photographs between the years 1995, 2003, and 2010. Results from a statistical analysis detected no significant differences in lateral channel migration rates between BEHI stability levels. Regression analysis further revealed that multiple factors were required to predict lateral channel migration rates. Stream power was also assessed to determine its ability to account for historical lateral channel migration rates, and was found to not be a valid predictor. Temporal and spatial changes in land use across the watershed were identified as the likely source of variation in lateral channel migration rates during the different time periods. In conclusion, the use of geomorphic assessments should be limited to characterizing current streambank stability.

In reading the landscape, detective-style investigations and interpretations are tied to theoretical and conceptual principles to generate catchment-specific analyses of river character, behaviour and evolution, including responses to human disturbance. This book has been constructed as an introductory text on river landscapes, providing a bridge and/or companion to quantitatively-framed or modelled approaches to landscape analysis that are addressed elsewhere. Cross section input data may be from standard cross section surveys using a rod and level or sag-tape procedures. WinXSPRO allows the user to subdivide the channel cross section into multiple sub-sections and has the ability to vary watersurface slopes with discharge to reflect natural conditions. Analysis options include developing stage-discharge relationships, evaluating changes in channel cross-sectional area, and computing sediment transport rates. Resource specialists can use the estimated stream-channel geometry cross section hydraulic characteristics and sediment transport output to assist with channel design and monitoring, instream flow analysis, the restoration of riparian areas, and the placement of instream structures.

Book excerpt: The disparity between watershed erosion rates and downstream sediment delivery has been an important theme in geomorphology for many decades, and the role of floodplains in sediment storage has frequently been cited. In the Piedmont province of the eastern US, upland deforestation and agricultural land use following European settlement led to deposition of thick packages of overbank sediment in valley bottoms, commonly referred to as "legacy" deposits. Previous authors have cited geomorphic evidence that some of this legacy sediment has been remobilized by lateral migration of channels. Recent interest has focused on the role of historic mill dams as a cause of floodplain aggradation, and on mill-dam deposits as a potentially important source of sediment exported downstream. This thesis seeks to address several outstanding questions: 1) How rapidly is sediment being remobilized from Baltimore County floodplains by channel migration and bank erosion? 2) What proportion of this sediment is derived from legacy deposits? 3) Is the presence of mill dams a necessary prerequisite for aggradation of legacy sediment? 4) How important are mill-dam deposits by comparison with other sediment sources contributing to downstream sediment yields?
