Book Comparing Health Insurance Estimates from the American Community Survey and the Current Population Survey

Download or read book Comparing Health Insurance Estimates from the American Community Survey and the Current Population Survey written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction: In 2008, the U.S. Census Bureau began fielding a health insurance question in the American Community Survey (ACS), with the first set of estimates released in September 2009. The ACS provides state policy makers and analysts with a powerful new tool for monitoring health insurance coverage and assessing policy changes at the state level. Data users may be more familiar with health insurance coverage estimates from the Census Bureau's Annual Social and Economic Supplement to the Current Population Survey (CPS), which was previously the only available source of annual health insurance estimates for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The ACS and CPS use different sampling methodologies, modes of data collection, question wording and processing regimens. Data users face a challenge when choosing the most appropriate data source for their needs. The purpose of this brief is to introduce health policy data users to the ACS, explain how it differs from the CPS, and provide guidance on issues to consider in deciding when to use each survey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Americans believe that people who lack health insurance somehow get the care they really need. Care Without Coverage examines the real consequences for adults who lack health insurance. The study presents findings in the areas of prevention and screening, cancer, chronic illness, hospital-based care, and general health status. The committee looked at the consequences of being uninsured for people suffering from cancer, diabetes, HIV infection and AIDS, heart and kidney disease, mental illness, traumatic injuries, and heart attacks. It focused on the roughly 30 million-one in seven-working-age Americans without health insurance. This group does not include the population over 65 that is covered by Medicare or the nearly 10 million children who are uninsured in this country. The main findings of the report are that working-age Americans without health insurance are more likely to receive too little medical care and receive it too late; be sicker and die sooner; and receive poorer care when they are in the hospital, even for acute situations like a motor vehicle crash.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roughly 40 million Americans have no health insurance, private or public, and the number has grown steadily over the past 25 years. Who are these children, women, and men, and why do they lack coverage for essential health care services? How does the system of insurance coverage in the U.S. operate, and where does it fail? The first of six Institute of Medicine reports that will examine in detail the consequences of having a large uninsured population, Coverage Matters: Insurance and Health Care, explores the myths and realities of who is uninsured, identifies social, economic, and policy factors that contribute to the situation, and describes the likelihood faced by members of various population groups of being uninsured. It serves as a guide to a broad range of issues related to the lack of insurance coverage in America and provides background data of use to policy makers and health services researchers.

Book Small Populations Large Effects

Download or read book Small Populations Large Effects written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-06-12 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1990s, the Census Bureau proposed a program of continuous measurement as a possible alternative to the gathering of detailed social, economic, and housing data from a sample of the U.S. population as part of the decennial census. The American Community Survey (ACS) became a reality in 2005, and has included group quarters (GQ)-such places as correctional facilities for adults, student housing, nursing facilities, inpatient hospice facilities, and military barracks-since 2006, primarily to more closely replicate the design and data products of the census long-form sample. The decision to include group quarters in the ACS enables the Census Bureau to provide a comprehensive benchmark of the total U.S. population (not just those living in households). However, the fact that the ACS must rely on a sample of what is a small and very diverse population, combined with limited funding available for survey operations, makes the ACS GQ sampling, data collection, weighting, and estimation procedures more complex and the estimates more susceptible to problems stemming from these limitations. The concerns are magnified in small areas, particularly in terms of detrimental effects on the total population estimates produced for small areas. Small Populations, Large Effects provides an in-depth review of the statistical methodology for measuring the GQ population in the ACS. This report addresses difficulties associated with measuring the GQ population and the rationale for including GQs in the ACS. Considering user needs for ACS data and of operational feasibility and compatibility with the treatment of the household population in the ACS, the report recommends alternatives to the survey design and other methodological features that can make the ACS more useful for users of small-area data.

Book Community Race and Coverage Rates An Analysis of Health Insurance Take Up Rates by Neighborhood Composition

Download or read book Community Race and Coverage Rates An Analysis of Health Insurance Take Up Rates by Neighborhood Composition written by Jordan Elizabeth Younes and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While social networks and community composition have been examined in the context of many health outcomes, this study is the first to investigate the relationship between community composition and health insurance take-up rates. This study employs data from two supplements of the 2005 US Current Population Survey. Four different measures of insurance coverage and eligibility are compared against proportions of immigrants and Hispanics within metropolitan FIPS codes. It finds a small, positive relationship between immigrant density and take-up rates for immigrants among the subsample of workers with access to employer-sponsored insurance. This work provides novel evidence that an immigrant's likelihood of purchasing health insurance increases with the percentage of immigrants who live in their neighborhood.

Book America s Children

Download or read book America s Children written by Institute of Medicine and National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-10-27 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's Children is a comprehensive, easy-to-read analysis of the relationship between health insurance and access to care. The book addresses three broad questions: How is children's health care currently financed? Does insurance equal access to care? How should the nation address the health needs of this vulnerable population? America's Children explores the changing role of Medicaid under managed care; state-initiated and private sector children's insurance programs; specific effects of insurance status on the care children receive; and the impact of chronic medical conditions and special health care needs. It also examines the status of "safety net" health providers, including community health centers, children's hospitals, school-based health centers, and others and reviews the changing patterns of coverage and tax policy options to increase coverage of private-sector, employer-based health insurance. In response to growing public concerns about uninsured children, last year Congress voted to provide $24 billion over five years for new state insurance initiatives. This volume will serve as a primer for concerned federal policymakers and regulators, state agency officials, health plan decisionmakers, health care providers, children's health advocates, and researchers.
