Book On Cantonese Learners Handing of Phonetic Length in Japanese

Download or read book On Cantonese Learners Handing of Phonetic Length in Japanese written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Uncorrected OCR) Abstract |n Cantonese Learners|Handling of Phonetic Length in Japanese|Submitted by SAGAYAMA JUNKO for the Degree of Master of Arts at the University of Hong Kong. in June 2005 Learning second languages is not an easy task for anyone. Especially for adults, pronunciation is one of the most difficult tasks to overcome. It is true that younger people can master second languages faster and easier than adults. Interference of their mother tongue is always seen in second languages. Cantonese, which has nine tones, is well known as a Tone language, and Cantonese people learning Japanese language often transfer tones into Japanese, which is a pitch-accented language from the point of view of fundamental frequency. However the transfer occurs not only in tones, but also in duration. In fact I consider that duration, which is called |ora|in Japanese, could be as important as accents in Japanese. Accents vary depending on regions, but mora is largely universal in Japanese dialects. From the point of view of duration, Japanese is a mora-timed language, whereas Cantonese is a syllable-timed language. Therefore Cantonese syllable length is often transferred to Japanese. If people want to speak Japanese well, it is important for them to comprehend their own mother tongue in order to understand and correct their own mistakes. It is also necessary for Japanese language teachers to understand students|mother tongue, and then they can instruct students how to speak better Japanese. In this dissertation, length in Cantonese and Japanese is studied, and students|mistakes are analyzed. As a Japanese teacher and a Cantonese learner, the author finds it is interesting and necessary to know Cantonese and Japanese phonetic and phonological phenomena. It is hoped that this dissertation would be of some help to both Japanese teachers and students.

In addition to providing descriptive generalizations of empirical phonetic/phonological facts, this volume also aims to give an overview of major phonological theories including, but not restricted to, traditional generative phonology, lexical phonology, prosodic morphology, intonational phonology, and the more recent Optimality Theory. It also touches on theories of speech perception and production. This book serves as a comprehensive guide to Japanese phonetics and phonology for all interested in linguistics and speech sciences.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled The French of Cantonese-Speaking Learners: The Case of Personal Pronouns submitted by Lam Tsz Ling, Elaine for the degree of Master of Arts at the University of Hong Kong in June 2003 This thesis explores how the French of Cantonese-speaking learners is affected by their first language, Cantonese and second language, English. Our focus is on the use of personal pronouns in comparison with Cantonese, English and French languages. Second Language Acquisition concepts like contrastive analysis, error analysis, interlanguage, language transfer and universal grammar are discussed. The introduction of those concepts is a way to understand the history of second language acquisition and the current status of SLA. A survey has also been conducted on three French native speakers and two Cantonese- speaking learners of French. The purpose is to understand the points of views from two different language-speaking groups of French. One of the main analyses is a study of grammatical errors by Cantonese-speaking learners of French. Generally speaking, the first language of Hong Kong students is Cantonese and the second language is English. The third language, French, is a special phenomenon mixed with the influence of Cantonese and English. Some grammatical errors that Cantonese-speakers make, are discussed and explained in detail in chapter four. The major theme of this dissertation is a comparison of the pronominal systems of Cantonese, English and French. We compare and contrast the personal pronouns of the three languages. Based on those linguistic differences, we point out the major pronominal errors committed by Cantonese-speaking learners of French. The final part of the thesis outlines the findings of the research we have made. A summary of all the chapters is made in the final conclusion.
