Download or read book Comparative Mammalian Immunology written by Ian R Tizard and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-02-09 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative Mammalian Immunology: The Evolution and Diversity of the Immune Systems of Mammals provides a review on the current knowledge of mammalian immune systems from a comparative viewpoint. This reference encompasses recent work on the immune systems of marine mammals, bats and marsupials in addition to other lesser-known species, with the immune systems of humans and laboratory mice as components of chapters on primates and rodents respectively. The book also makes use of the most recent studies on the genomic sequences of the mammals to identify both common and unique features of each mammal's immune system. The book elucidates the complex, but coordinated and controlled series of interactions involving cells and molecules that has evolved to protect the host against disease. Mammals consist of a highly diverse group of animals in which the immune system has been subjected to a variety of selective pressures. This is reflected in differences in the organization and function of their immune systems, and is especially seen in those gene families characterized by complexity and polymorphism. - Demonstrates multiple diverse pathways and mechanisms to optimize resistance and survival in the face of infectious diseases - Shows the clear patterns of emergence of different immunologic traits among the diverse orders of mammals - Reflects issues with innate or adaptive immune systems - Serves as a comprehensive review of the current state of knowledge of the immune system of each mammalian order

Download or read book Biological Flow in Large Vessels written by Valerie Deplano and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines recent methods used for blood flow modeling and associated in vivo experiments, conducted using experimental data from medical imaging. Different strategies are proposed, from small-scale models to complex 3D modeling using modern computational codes. The geometries are wide-ranging and deal with the narrowing and widening of sections (stenoses, aneurysms), bifurcations, geometries associated with prosthetic elements, and even cases of vessels with smaller dimensions than those of the blood cells circulating in them. Biological Flow in Large Vessels provides answers to the question of how medical and biomechanical knowledge can be combined to address clinical problems. It offers guidance for further development of numerical models, as well as experimental protocols applied to clinical research, with tools that can be used in real-time and at the patient's bedside, for decision-making support, predicting the progression of pathologies, and planning personalized interventions.

Download or read book Camel Clinical Biochemistry and Hematology written by Bernard Faye and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-27 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work brings together a wealth of data regarding the reference values and factors of variation in biochemical parameters used by camel veterinarians and scientists to determine these animals’ nutritional and clinical status. It also explores several technical aspects involved in determining these parameters, sampling procedures, and essential elements in the interpretation of the results. Though many texts are available on small and large ruminants, much less is known about species confined to the marginal zones of tropical and Mediterranean countries, such as camels. This book addresses precisely this research gap, on the one hand by presenting an extensive review of the literature, and on the other by synthesizing the outcomes of the authors’ numerous previous works. In veterinary medicine, blood tests to help diagnose diseases in cattle were first proposed nearly a century ago, but were mainly developed in the 1960s, initially at specialized research or veterinary services laboratories, and eventually, with the advent of new equipment and the miniaturization of the analyzers, finding their way into veterinarians’ cabinets. Beyond their diagnostic value, veterinary surgeons and zootechnicians also speculated on the potential use of blood tests to evaluate animals’ nutritional status. Thus, a whole range of analyses are now proposed to the stakeholders responsible for animal health. Such analyses could help to define a metabolic profile, which would offer a valuable decision-making tool for experts and researchers alike.
