Book The Interfaces

Download or read book The Interfaces written by Kerstin Schwabe and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Interfaces: Deriving and Interpreting Omitted Structures is a collection of never-before-published papers that explore the nature of the interfaces of syntax with semantics, phonology, and discourse. The papers investigate the various ways in which elliptical structures are related to these interfaces. As such, they not only make a valuable contribution to generative linguistic research but, more generally, help to deepen our understanding of the relation between form and meaning in natural language. In the book's introductory chapter, the editors address general issues related to current work on ellipsis and the syntax/semantics, syntax/phonology and syntax/discourse interfaces. The rest of the book is organized into three parts. The first examines PF-deletion accounts of elliptical structures; the second investigates these structures from the perspective of the syntax/semantic interface; and the third explores these from a perspective that concentrates on the relation between semantics and focus and discourse structure. Together the papers collected in this volume offer a convincing demonstration of the value of collaborative research on the 'interfaces'.

Book Parallelism and Prosody in the Processing of Ellipsis Sentences

Download or read book Parallelism and Prosody in the Processing of Ellipsis Sentences written by Katy Carlson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2002. This volume is part of the 'Outstanding Dissertations in Linguistics' series. This book investigates the processing of ellipsis sentences, focusing on the following questions: (i) are ellipsis sentences processed using special routines employed only for ellipsis or are they processed using the same principles needed for unelided sentences? (ii) does parallelism influence sentence processing? if so, what kinds of similarities matter?

Book Perspectives on Arabic Linguistics

Download or read book Perspectives on Arabic Linguistics written by Hamid Ouali and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume presents cutting-edge research on Arabic linguistics. It features a set of papers which continue a long tradition of seeking new explanations for familiar or previously undiscovered structural patterns. While the papers illustrate a range of approaches, from formalist to functionalist, each paper combines rigorous analysis of a set of Arabic data within the context of explicit models of some aspect of human language. The volume consists of three sections, the first section devoted to phonetics and phonology, the second to syntax, and the third to language acquisition and language contact.

Book Transport Processes Iono and Osmoregulation

Download or read book Transport Processes Iono and Osmoregulation written by R. Gilles and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is one of those published from the proceedings of the invited lectures to the First International Congress of Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry I organized at Liege (Belgium) in August 1984 under the auspices of the Section of Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry of the International Union of Biological Sciences. In a general foreword to these different volumes, it seems to me appropriate to consider briefly what may be the comparative approach. Living organisms, beyond the diversity of their morphological forms, have evolved a widespread range of basic solutions to cope with the different problems, both organismal and environmental with which they are faced. Soon after the turn of the century, some biologists realized that these solutions can be best comprehended in the frame work of a comparative approach integrating results of physiological and biochemical studies done at the organismic, cellular and molecular levels. The development of this approach amongst both physiologists and biochemists remained, however, extremely slow until recently.

Book Ellipsis in Comparatives

Download or read book Ellipsis in Comparatives written by Winfried Lechner and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generative analyses of comparatives traditionally include two construction specific ellipsis operations, Comparative Deletion and Comparative Ellipsis. Drawing from a wide array of new data, the present monograph develops a novel, directly semantically interpretable analysis of comparatives which does not require reference to designated deletion processes. On the one hand, Comparative Deletion is reinterpreted in terms of overt movement of the degree predicate. The resulting head-raising analysis contributes to an understanding of various puzzles for comparatives related to binding, locality and the influence of word-order variation on the interpretation and size of the ellipsis site. On the other hand, it is argued that Comparative Ellipsis can entirely be subsumed under standardly sanctioned ellipsis operations such as Gapping, Right Node Raising and Across-the-Board-movement. In addition, the study presents arguments for an ellipsis analysis of phrasal comparatives (such as Millhouse saw more movies than Bart). Empirical support for this conception derives, among others, from the complex interdependencies between ellipsis and serialization in English and German, and the binding properties of remnants inside the comparative complement. The study is directed towards readers interested in formal syntax and the syntax/semantics interface.

Book Comparative Mammalian Immunology

Download or read book Comparative Mammalian Immunology written by Ian R Tizard and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-02-09 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative Mammalian Immunology: The Evolution and Diversity of the Immune Systems of Mammals provides a review on the current knowledge of mammalian immune systems from a comparative viewpoint. This reference encompasses recent work on the immune systems of marine mammals, bats and marsupials in addition to other lesser-known species, with the immune systems of humans and laboratory mice as components of chapters on primates and rodents respectively. The book also makes use of the most recent studies on the genomic sequences of the mammals to identify both common and unique features of each mammal's immune system. The book elucidates the complex, but coordinated and controlled series of interactions involving cells and molecules that has evolved to protect the host against disease. Mammals consist of a highly diverse group of animals in which the immune system has been subjected to a variety of selective pressures. This is reflected in differences in the organization and function of their immune systems, and is especially seen in those gene families characterized by complexity and polymorphism. - Demonstrates multiple diverse pathways and mechanisms to optimize resistance and survival in the face of infectious diseases - Shows the clear patterns of emergence of different immunologic traits among the diverse orders of mammals - Reflects issues with innate or adaptive immune systems - Serves as a comprehensive review of the current state of knowledge of the immune system of each mammalian order
