Book Elements of the Comparative

Download or read book Elements of the Comparative written by W. Newton Parker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of the Comparative: Anatomy of Vertebrates The brevity of the descriptions is, however, to some extent made up for by the number of woodcuts. Most of these are taken from the German edition, but several new figures have been added. The arrangement of the book according to organs, and not according to groups of animals, is likely to render it more difficult for a beginner, and a general knowledge of zoology will be of great assistance. The pages on which the different groups are described are, however, collected together in the index, so that the sections relating to any one group can be easily referred to. The present arrangement seems to be the only possible one if the book is to be founded on a scientific basis, for it is most important that the student should grasp the fact that there has been an evolution of organs, as well as of animals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative Anatomy of Vertebrates In order that this may be realized, embryology is made the basis, the various structures being traced from the undiflerentiated egg into the adult condition. This renders it easy to compare the embryonic stages of the higher vertebrates with the adults of the lower and to recognize the resemblances and diflerences between organs in the separate classes. There has been no attempt to describe the strue ture of any species in detail, but rather to outline the general mor phology of all vertebrates. To aid in the discrimination of the broader features and the more minor details, two sizes of type have been used, the larger for matter to be mastered by the student, the smaller for details and modifications in the separate classes to which reference may need to be made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative Anatomy of Vertebrates: With Three Hundred and Seventy-Figures and a Bibliography The developmental history of this book has been somewhat complicated. The first German edition appeared in 1882, under the title of Lehrbuch der vergleichende Anatomie der Wirbeltiere, and a second edition followed in 1886. In 1884, a short Grundriss was published, which, after passing through four editions and gradually increasing in size, replaced the Lehrbuch under the title of Vergleichende Anatomie der Wirbeltiere, in 1902. A farther edition appeared in 1906, and this was followed by a shorter Einfuhrung in 1907: the latter was written to meet the requirements of beginners, and it contains no bibliography. The first and second English editions (1886 and 1897) were based respectively on the first and third editions of the Grundriss, and considerable modifications in detail were introduced. The present (third) edition, which has been almost entirely re-written, was prepared from the German editions of 1906 and 1907, and I am much indebted to Professor Wiedersheim for allowing me to make such alterations as seemed desirable in the interests of English students, and for the pleasure of his collaboration last summer, when I had the advantage of discussing various points with him personally. The general plan of the original has been retained throughout, but I found it advisable to extend some portions and to abridge others, besides making various minor modifications. After re-editing by Professor Wiedersheim, the bibliography given in the German original is inserted entire, except that the titles and references have been abbreviated and slight rearrangements made in order to save space: I have also ventured to introduce a few additions. Download or read book Comparative Anatomy and Physiology Classic Reprint written by F. Jeffrey Bell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-28 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative Anatomy and Physiology The reader who is sufficiently acquainted with the progress in vertebrate physiology during the last phase of physiological methods, and who knows how scattered and incomplete are the investigations which have been made by the same kind of physical and chemical inquiries on invertebrate animals, will not expect to find in the present volume any complete statement of the physiology of animals, in the sense in which that term is now used. Such observations as have been made without especial reference to the vital processes of man are, for the most part, very valuable and suggestive but the time to write a text book oi Comparative Physiology, as we now understand it, has not yet arrived. Download or read book Elements of the Comparative Anatomy of the Vertebrate Animals written by Rudolf Wagner and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of the Comparative Anatomy of the Vertebrate Animals: Designed Especially for the Use of Students The want of some good elementary work in our own language, at least of one that, within a small compass and reasonable price, should express the amount of our knowledge upon the Anatomy of the several classes of Vertebrate Animals, was the chief inducement to my undertaking the translation of the present work, in the selection of which I was encouraged by the very favorable light in which Dr. Rudolph Wagner had been already made known to the Medical Profession through his "Elements of Physiology," so ably edited by Dr. Willis. The thorough practical knowledge which he possesses of his subject, combined with the clearness and brevity of his style, render indeed his works the very best introductions that are extant to the sciences of Physiology and Comparative Anatomy. "The Lehrbuch der Zootomie," of Dr. Wagner, having lately arrived at a second edition in Germany, has given the Author an opportunity of thoroughly remodelling the work, and introducing those improvements which time, experience, and more extended knowledge, have suggested to him. Book Structure of the Vertebrates Classic Reprint

Download or read book Structure of the Vertebrates Classic Reprint written by Malcolm Edgeworth Little and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-25 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Structure of the Vertebrates Compliance with the above requests might seem to be limiting the individual initiative of the student, and putting class emphasis upon the middle group of students rather than the selected few. The defense for this is: (1) the belief that the interested and brilliant student will discover enough for himself to stimulate his imagination; (2) the pragmatic statement that the average student goes to professional school with little idea as to the bearing of comparative anatomy upon human structures; and (3) the fact that this method has proved its efficiency with our students at New York University. Although most scientific terms are defined when first used, a glossary is appended for convenience. In it both the derivations of the words and their definitions are given. A second appendix gives a more complete classification of the vertebrates than is included in the body of the text. A generic name which is used in the text will be found defined in the glossary. Then by refer ring to the classification, its relationships and also all the other members of the group can be located. Instead Of footnotes, cross references are made in the text. This arrangement appears to be less distracting to the reader and will also, it is hoped, bring the chapters into closer unity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrations of Comparative Anatomy: Vertebrate and Invertebrate, for the Use of Students in the Museum of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy The specimens and dissections described in the following pages have been prepared to illustrate the most important forms in Invertebrate and Vertebrate Anatomy. When the first edition of these descriptions, entitled 'List of Dissections, ' was published in 1871, Invertebrate Anatomy alone was illustrated. We have now included four representative Vertebrate forms - Rat, Pigeon, Frog, and Perch: and have increased the series of Invertebrata from 55 to 90; adding to it several specimens, with detailed descriptions, of the Exoskeleton in those forms where such descriptions are not to be met with in the text-books that are commonly used by English students. All the descriptions have been carefully revised. As in the former edition, we have not attempted to give a complete account of each dissection, but merely an indication of its leading features, to enable students more readily to recognise the points dwelt upon in the literature of the subject, or in lectures; and to shew them clearly the position and relation of the organs which they will subsequently have to examine when they begin to dissect.
