Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations' Decade of Disabled Persons has served as a time for standard setting in the field of human rights and disability, and has created the need to evaluate the relevant human rights instruments for disabled persons. This volume responds to this need by offering a collection of essays on the subject of human rights and disability, and an extensive compilation of international and regional human rights instruments, guidelines and principles which are of special relevance to disabled people. It should serve organizations of disabled people as well as governments throughout the world as a resource and as an introduction to human rights and disability. This shortcoming may be one reason for the widely prevailing notion that disability is a welfare issue rather than a human rights issue.

Download or read book Working towards Equity written by Dustin Galer and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Working towards Equity, Dustin Galer argues that paid work significantly shaped the experience of disability during the late twentieth century. Using a critical analysis of disability in archival records, personal collections, government publications and a series of interviews, Galer demonstrates how demands for greater access among disabled people for paid employment stimulated the development of a new discourse of disability in Canada. Family advocates helped people living in institutions move out into the community as rehabilitation professionals played an increasingly critical role in the lives of working-age adults with disabilities. Meanwhile, civil rights activists crafted a new consumer-led vision of social and economic integration. Employment was, and remains, a central component in disabled peoples' efforts to become productive, autonomous and financially secure members of Canadian society. Working towards Equity offers new in-depth analysis on rights activism as it relates to employment, sheltered workshops, deinstitutionalization and labour markets in the contemporary context in Canada.

Download or read book The Strengths Model Case Management with People with Psychiatric Disabilities written by Charles A. Rapp and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-02-10 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has occurred since the publication of the first edition of this classic textbook. Recovery from psychiatric disabilities has become the new vision for mental health services. It has placed a new eminence on consumer resiliency, choice, self-determination, shared decision-making, and empowerment. Implementing evidence-based services has become a major focus of service system reform internationally. The Strengths Model, Second Edition firmly grounds the strengths model of case management within the recovery paradigm and details evidence-based guidelines for practice. In clear language the authors describe the conceptual underpinnings, theory, empirical support, principles, and practice methods that comprise the strengths model of case management. A chapter on the organizational structure and management methods necessary for successful implementation of the model make this a valuable tool for trainers, supervisors, and quality assurance personnel. This thoroughly updated edition reflects the dynamic nature of the strengths model. Practice methods have been added and refined and more detailed descriptions provided. Practice tools have been improved and new ones, like the Strengths Model Fidelity Instrument, added. New case vignettes have been added to give the reader a vivid picture of the methods in actual practice. A user-friendly guide for students and professionals, The Strengths Model remains the only book available that systematically translates the ideas and conceptions about the strengths model into a set of empirically derived practices for people with psychiatric disabilities.
Download or read book Disability Studies in India written by Renu Addlakha and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1970s, the international disability rights movement, the United Nations and national governments across the world have attempted to ameliorate the status of the disabled population through a range of legislative and policy measures primarily in the areas of health, education, employment, accessible environments and social security. While the discourse in the disability sector in India has shifted from charity and welfare to human rights and entitlements, disability studies — as an interdisciplinary academic terrain that focuses on the contributions, experiences, history and culture of persons with disabilities — has not yet taken root. This volume collates some of the most recent pioneering work on disability studies from across the country. The essays presented here engage with the concept of disability from a variety of disciplinary positions, sociocultural contexts and subjective experiences within the overarching framework of the Indian reality. The contributors — including some with disabilities themselves — provide a well-rounded perspective, in shifting focus from disability as a medical condition only needing clinical intervention to giving it due social and academic legitimacy. This book outlines key issues that would be germane to any disability studies endeavour in India and South Asia, and will appeal to academics, activists, institutions, laypersons and professionals involved in social welfare, sociology, disability studies, women’s studies, psychiatry, rehabilitation, and social and preventive medicine.

The second part covers the disciplines of development studies, economy, finance, planning, rural development, urban development, tribal development, nongovernmental organisations, and general areas. Independent India wanted to build a modern, strong, dynamic, and self-reliant nation and embarked on the path of planned economic development. Growth, modernisation, self-reliance, and social justice are the basic objectives governing Indian planning. Dr. D. Swaminathans lecturers presented a clear view about Indias planning process. In the context of globalization, reforms in higher and technical education have been set in motion in India. The need for effective cooperation between universities, industries, R&D national laboratories, and the national scientific and engineering associations and bodies has been well recognised for bringing relevance in higher and technical education and for indigenous technology development and sharing of resources. In this context, Swaminathan Model for University-Industry- National R&D LaboratoriesProfessional Bodies and Academies Interaction for Countrys Economic Development plays an important role.
