The study is not an exhaustive review of the topic, but rather is an exploration of the social drivers of violence, and its impact on social relations. The report consists of six chapters. In chapter one, the topic of urban violence is introduced as a pressing development issue. Chapter two discusses the complex relationship between cities and violence. In chapter three, the report reviews the literature to develop an analytical framework for understanding community capacities for violence prevention. Chapter four reviews interventions to prevent violence in terms of their impact on these key community capacities. The empirical findings from the five case studies are presented in chapter five, followed by strategic policy orientations in chapter six.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in youth violence prevention has shown that social-cognitive and parenting programs are effective strategies for reducing youth violence. For the current study, a process program evaluation was conducted on a community youth violence prevention program that provides therapeutic services to first-time nonviolent offenders and their parents in Los Angeles County. The implementation of Best Practices for youth violence prevention strategies of parenting, and social-cognitive programs, as well as Positive Youth Development was examined. The goal was to provide feedback to the program to encourage program development. Findings indicate that the program evaluated showed good implementation of most Best Practice strategies and Positive Youth Development theory, with areas of growth being evaluation, and clarifying goals and objectives.
