Book Learning from the West

Download or read book Learning from the West written by Dan Hough and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning from the West? brings insight into political life after the collapse of communism and the fall of the Iron Curtain in the late 1980s. For Communist parties and their successors (CSPs), the challenge was perhaps the greatest – to redefine themselves within new, ‘westernised’ political systems. As these parties sought to adapt their programmatic appeals to their new environments, they searched for policies from abroad that could fit these new political structures. The political parties of Western Europe provided a rich range of programmes from which policies could be drawn. This book analyses how, to what extent and under what conditions external influences came to bear on the programmatic development of CSPs. It argues that while some parties remain neo-communist in orientation, growling about the evils of capitalism on the far-left of their respective political systems, others have developed into social democratic actors, embracing programmatic ideals that often bear a strong resemblance to those of centre-left actors in Western Europe. This book was previously published as a special issue of The Journal of Communist Studies and Transition Politics.

Book Mapping the West European Left

Download or read book Mapping the West European Left written by Perry Anderson and published by Verso. This book was released on 1994 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized as a series of tightly linked, comparative assessments, Mapping the West European Left provides a guide to the state of the left in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Britain, France, Italy and Spain. While all the essays are detailed historical compositions setting recent crises and dilemmas in a longer perspective reaching back into the postwar settlement they articulate original insights into the contemporary political conjuncture. Why did Swedish social democracy lose hegemony and direction while its Norwegian counterpart showed unexpected resilience? What was the background to the Danish rebellion against Maastricht? What are the prospects for the SPD and the Greens in post-unification Germany? Should the British Labour Party embrace electoral reform? What propelled the French Socialist Party from triumph to disaster? And why did the Italian left fail to fill the vacuum created by the collapse of the Christian Democrats? Behind the questions explored by the contributors to Mapping the West European Left lie deeper issues concerning the future of radical politics in Europe after the repudiation of Keynsianism and the end of communism. With the individual country analyses synthesized by the editors in a concise and comprehensive introductory essay, this book provides key pointers to the social forces and ideological platforms that offer lines of advance to the left today. Contributors- Tobias Abse (Italy), Patrick Camiller (Spain), Adne Cappelen (Norway), Niels Finn Christiansen (Denmark), Jan Fagerberg (Norway), Jane Jenson (France), Peter Mair (Britain), Lars Mjoset (Norway), Stephen Padgett (Germany), William Paterson (Germany), Jonas Pontusson (Sweden), George Ross (France), Bent Sofus Tranoy (Norway).

Book The Crisis of Socialism in Europe

Download or read book The Crisis of Socialism in Europe written by Christiane Lemke and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revolutions in Eastern Europe and the recasting of socialism in Western Europe since 1989 have given rise to intense debate over the origins, character, and implications of the "crisis" of socialism. Is socialism in ideological, electoral, or organizational decline? Is the decline inevitable or can socialism be revitalized? This volume draws together historians and political scientists of Eastern and Western European politics to address these questions. The collection begins with an historical overview of socialism in Western Europe and moves toward the suggestion of a framework for a post-socialist discourse. Among the topics covered are: the birth and death of communism and a regime type in Eastern Europe; how different forms of national communism were smothered by Sovietization in the postwar period; the origins of revolutions in Eastern Europe; the potential for social democracy in Hungary; the role of the Left in a reunified German; and directions for the Left in general. Contributors. Geoff Eley, Konrad Jarausch, Herbert Kitschelt, Christiane Lemke, Andrei Markovits, Gary Marks, Wolfgang Merkel, Norman Naimark, Iván and Szonja Szelénya, Sharon Wolchik

Book West European Communist Parties after the Revolutions of 1989

Download or read book West European Communist Parties after the Revolutions of 1989 written by Martin J. Bull and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the impact of the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union on the Communist Parties of Western Europe. Seven case-studies, covering the Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Belgian, British and German parties, provide a tightly-argued comparative perspective. The conclusion assesses the range of responses to the dramatic events of 1989-91 and likely future direction of the west European communist movement. It is argued that, whilst it is no longer possible to talk of a coherent 'family' of communist parties, various individual parties - some of them in revised form - may continue to prosper.
