Book excerpt: "This dissertation explored veteran teachers' perceptions of the interpersonal communication strategies that have supported their continued development and school interactions. This study also investigated the ways in which mentorship supported the development of these skills. This study was conducted because of the crucial need for teacher retention. Previous research indicated that a large percentage of teachers leave the profession within the five years of teaching (Sutcher et al., 2016). Therefore, this study sought to understand ways teachers have used their communication skills to sustain a career in education. Sixteen veteran teachers who had taught five years or more were interviewed in this qualitative study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted in the winter of 2017 and 2018 and allowed teachers to examine their own interpersonal communication skills and strategies that have influenced their growth in education. Responses were analyzed using thematic analysis which helped identify in what ways communication skills had sustained teachers throughout their years of service in education. Five themes for interpersonal communication were revealed: Listen to Generate Understanding; Promote Collegiality; Build Positive Relationships with Students; Colleagues, and Parents; Provide Direct Feedback to Parents and Students; and Pay Attention to Nonverbal Communication as well as two themes for mentorship: Providing a Caring Environment for Teachers and Receiving Feedback Supported Teacher Development. Recommendations were offered to credential programs, schools, and district leaders.
