The popularity of sports is a bridge builder to 95% of people living in our world. We, as Christians, long to communicate with all nations, but find it difficult to do it through traditional means. As the cultures of our world change, so we must discover effective ways to relate to the secular people. The playing field doesn't present cultural, social, political and religious barriers. It is an open field that is available to Christian athletes and spectators. Since Christ asks us to go and make disciples, sports can help us penetrate our world. This book provides a general introduction to the concept and practice of sports evangelism springing from a biblical and theological platform. It demonstrates many opportunities of doing sports evangelism in the contemporary culture at home and abroad.Dr. Josef Solc is a native of the Czech Republic. He represented his home country in tennis and ice hockey. He wanted to study in a seminary in Prague, but the communist government told him it was more beneficial for their society if he continued playing professional ice hockey than becoming a pastor. During the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, Solc left his home and began his studies in Switzerland, then in Oklahoma and Texas culminating in Ph.D. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. There he became a pastor at Hulen Street Baptist Church where he developed a strong evangelistic ministry by using sports. After seventeen years of pastoral ministry, Solc began teaching evangelism and missions at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina.Professor Solc lives with his wife Joy in Raleigh, North Carolina. He continues teaching and doing sports evangelism at SEBTS.

Book excerpt: Sports communication is a vibrant, blossoming research area within the communication discipline. One of the more fruitful directions in sports communication research pertains to social media. Social media has embedded itself in the sports world in a very short period of time. As a result, there is a need for instructional resources that prepare students to understand the nuances and power that social media possess. This research provides the foundation for a case study textbook centered on social media and sports communication. Specifically, four cases dealing with: (a) athletes using social media to encourage input from fans; (b) sports organizations using social media as an agenda-setting tool; (c) negative parasocial interaction expressed to athletes via social media; and (d) athletes using social media to enact image repair are presented. These cases demonstrate that social media is a valuable conduit between athletes and fans that enables athletes and sports organizations to cultivate fan identity and maintain control over public information. The cases also demonstrate that fan behavior via social media can quickly turn problematic, requiring that athletes and sports organizations respond appropriately, yet strategically. The research concludes by offering implications for future social media and sports communication research.

Book excerpt: Communication and Contradiction in the NCAA: An Unlevel Playing Field is a critical examination of the contradictory nature of the NCAA, and how the inherent contradictions impact the communication activities of its constituents, supporters, and challengers. At the heart of the NCAA is the student-athlete, born out of an idealistic collection of communal values that is often at odds with institutional practices. The rhetorical negotiation of the student-athlete's identity informs and confuses communication practices on a number of levels, from interpersonal interactions to organizational apologia. Because the student-athlete is critical to maintaining the collegiate athletics orientation, the NCAA works overtime in promoting, maintaining, and defending it in the face of public scrutiny. The NCAA and its member institutions, like any organization, are compelled to answer public accusations, often working to defend inconsistent policies to an increasingly hostile audience. In an effort to solidify its power, the NCAA uses public discourse to maintain its position by establishing and enforcing proper codes of conduct for participants, and rationalizing unfair labor practices, athletics budgets, and rising tuition costs designed to boost athletics. In response they often rely on familiar rhetorical and organizational practices, such as branding, mascots, and heroic stories of student-athletes, all of which come with issues of their own. All of these communication phenomena, from interpersonal support-seeking to organizational scapegoating, are informed by the central student-athlete mythos. This puts the NCAA at a contradictory crossroads as they work to reconcile inconsistent practices and messages.
