Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Longleaf Pine Management Early settlers encountered a virgin longleaf pine forest from southeastern Virginia to east Texas (figure Some have estimated the original total acreage to be 50 to 60 million acres. Now that this land is settled, only 5 million acres of longleaf pine remain. What factors contributed to such a drastic change? Conversion to other uses and species, unfavorable cut ting practices, and failure to provide proper regenera tion conditions are the principal culprits. But recent research and an array of successful experiences are giving hope that some of the lost ground can be re gained for this valuable southern pine species. Longleaf pine grows well on a variety of sites, but is most often found on sandy soils low in organic matter in the surface portion and medium to strongly acid. Drainage often ranges from good to excessive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Properties and Uses of the Southern Pines Classic Reprint

Download or read book Properties and Uses of the Southern Pines Classic Reprint written by Harold Scofield Betts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Properties and Uses of the Southern Pines Longleaf, shortleaf, and loblolly pine trees do not, as a rule, exceed 30 inches in diameter and 100 feet in height. Logs cut from the southern pines average below 20 inches in diameter at the top. Longleaf pine commonly grows in pure stands of wide extent to the almost complete exclusion of other species.' It occurs principally in a belt 200 miles wide in the lower part of the Southern States which border upon the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. As longleaf pine requires considerable direct sunlight for its proper development and grows slowly during its early life, it is likely, except in very sandy soil, to be suppressed by competing trees of more rapid growth; there fore the chances for its reproduction on cut - over areas when left to the ordinary course of nature are limited. Longleaf attains a diame ter of 16 inches breast-high, with a height of about 100 feet, in from one hundred and ten to one hundred and forty years. Shortleaf pine is a tree of the plains and foothills; in the South it rarely grows above an altitude of feet, and in the north ern portion of its range not above feet. East of the Missis sippi River the tree appears scattered among the hardwoods, while west of the Mississippi it forms large forests on the table-lands of the hill country, especially in Arkansas, northern Louisiana, and Mis souri. Under favorable conditions shortleaf reaches a diameter of 16 inches breast-high and a height of about 85 feet at an average age Of one hundred and ten years. Book Forgotten Grasslands of the South

Download or read book Forgotten Grasslands of the South written by Reed F. Noss and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-12-03 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forgotten Grasslands of the South is the study of one of the biologically richest and most endangered ecosystems in North America. In a seamless blend of science and personal observation, renowned ecologist Reed Noss explains the natural history of southern grasslands, their origin and history, and the physical determinants of grassland distribution, including ecology, soils, landform, and hydrology. In addition to offering fascinating new information about these little-studied ecosystems, Noss demonstrates how natural history is central to the practice of conservation. Although theory and experimentation have recently dominated the field of ecology, ecologists are coming to realize how these distinct approaches are not divergent but complementary, and that pursuing them together can bring greater knowledge and understanding of how the natural world works and how we can best conserve it. This long-awaited work sets a new standard for scientific literature and is essential reading for those who study and work to conserve the grasslands of the South as well as for everyone who is fascinated by the natural world.

Book The Forest of the Lacandon Maya

Download or read book The Forest of the Lacandon Maya written by Suzanne Cook and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Forest of the Lacandon Maya: An Ethnobotanical Guide, with active links to audio-video recordings, serves as a comprehensive guide to the botanical heritage of the northern Lacandones. Numbering fewer than 300 men, women, and children, this community is the most culturally conservative of the Mayan groups. Protected by their hostile environment, over many centuries they maintain autonomy from the outside forces of church and state, while they continue to draw on the forest for spiritual inspiration and sustenance. In The Forest of the Lacandon Maya: An Ethnobotanical Guide, linguist Suzanne Cook presents a bilingual Lacandon-English ethnobotanical guide to more than 450 plants in a tripartite organization: a botanical inventory in which main entries are headed by Lacandon names followed by common English and botanical names, and which includes plant descriptions and uses; an ethnographic inventory, which expands the descriptions given in the botanical inventory, providing the socio-historical, dietary, mythological, and spiritual significance of most plants; and chapters that discuss the relevant cultural applications of the plants in more detail provide a description of the area’s geography, and give an ethnographic overview of the Lacandones. Active links throughout the text to original audio-video recordings demonstrate the use and preparation of the most significant plants.
