Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Council Inspector Paul Clark visited the Peredur Trust in Cornwall more than twenty years ago, he was under pressure to serve a legal notice to comply with various regulations or face closure. He expected to encounter a cult organization with weird and unpalatable practices. In fact, he found something quite different. As he says in his foreword, "I came to inspect--I stopped to evaluate--and I remained to admire " Paul later became the trust's chief executive. The Peredur Trust has been caring for disadvantaged and differently abled individuals, effectively and successfully, for more than sixty years. Siegfried Rudel, its president and one of its four founders, tells the story of how the impulse behind the organization--inspired by the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner-- first transpired. However, this is not simply a narrative and history of a single organization; rather, this book represents a universal cultural impulse that embraces the needs of our time, and one that reappears today in many residential communities for people with special needs around the world. In a fascinating presentation, and with the aid of many archival photographs, In the Light of the Lanthorn tackles interrelated themes including the arts, the environment, sustainability, agriculture and nutrition--all in the light of working with individuals with special needs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997. This book compares and contrasts the experiences of deviant pupils in a mainstream school with that of those in a special unit for pupils with behavioural problems. The author’s aims are to (i) evaluate the differences between the behaviour of deviant boys and girls within the mainstream education system with those without; and (ii) justify the criteria for transferring deviant pupils to special units. Her research shows that there is no uniformity in the deviant behaviour of pupils in either situation. In fact, there are more similarities in the behaviour of pupils across the dividing line than pupils in the same institution. Such findings raise questions about the apparent arbitrary nature if some transferral decisions and, in the longer term, the whole logic of separate schooling for pupils who are considered by some to be a problem. At a time when market forces and competition have distracted the schools’ attention away from the needs of the individual pupil, this book stresses the need for changes at all levels which will make school relevant to the lives of all pupils.

Download or read book Comparative Social Administration written by John Greve and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first work that systematically applies the comparative method to the study of social policy and administration. After a full discussion of this approach in the introduction, the book offers three authoritative national studies--France, Norway, Canada--each giving a rounded picture of social policy and administration in the particular country. Social needs, resources, and forms of social administration are related to the most significant social, demographic, economic, and political factors of the area in question. The authors trace the development of social policies and indicate the direction these policies are likely to take in the future. Comparisons between problems and solutions in all three countries, as well as in Great Britain and the United States, are made throughout.Part II contains comparative analyses of particular problems and of the different forms of social administration designed to deal with them. The problem approach is applied to five areas of social administration: social policy and social planning, social security, coordination, social policies and care for the aged and family policies. Examples are taken not only from the countries previously under study, but also from other Western nations with well-developed social service systems. A concluding chapter delineates the benefits of the comparative method as demonstrated in this volume, and outlines how the goals set forth in the introduction have been fulfilled. This unique and fascinating book will be of interest to a wide range of readers, especially those concerned with the study, the making, or the implementation and administration of social policy. It will serve as a stimulus for fresh interpretation and the re-evaluation of major social institutions here and abroad.
