Book A Short History of Police and Policing

Download or read book A Short History of Police and Policing written by Clive Emsley and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The police are constantly under scrutiny. They are criticized for failings, praised for successes, and hailed as heroes for their sacrifices. Starting from the premise that every society has norms and ways of dealing with transgressors, A Short History of Police and Policing traces the evolution of the multiple forms of 'policing' that existed in the past. It examines the historical development of the various bodies, individuals, and officials who carried these out in different societies, in Europe and European colonies, but also with reference to countries such as ancient Egypt, China, and the USA. By demonstrating that policing was never the exclusive dominion of the police, and that the institution of the police, as we know it today, is a relatively recent creation, Professor Emsley explores the idea and reality of policing, and shows how an institution we now call 'the police' came to be virtually universal in our modern world.

Book Undercover Police Surveillance in Comparative Perspective

Download or read book Undercover Police Surveillance in Comparative Perspective written by Cyrille Fijnaut and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2023-08-14 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States and Europe have recently experienced a significant expansion in the use of undercover police tactics and technological means of surveillance. In a democratic society, such tactics raise significant questions for public policy and social research. New and sophisticated forms of crime and social control (and their internationalization) represent an important and neglected topic. Realizing this, the leading scholars in this field created a European and American working group for the comparative study of police surveillance. This collaborative, landmark volume reports the results of their work. It is the first book ever devoted to the comparative study of the topic and includes articles on the historical development of covert policing in Europe and its spread to the United States (where it was extended and recently exported back to Europe), plus detailed accounts of the use of covert tactics in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Iceland, Sweden, Canada and the United States. Audience: Social scientists, historians, policy makers, lawyers, and criminal justice practitioners

Book excerpt: Scholars across disciplines on both sides of the Atlantic have recently begun to open up, as never before, the scholarly study of race and racism in France. These original essays bring together in one volume new work in history, sociology, anthropology, political science, and legal studies. Each of the eleven articles presents fresh research on the tension between a republican tradition in France that has long denied the legitimacy of acknowledging racial difference and a lived reality in which racial prejudice shaped popular views about foreigners, Jews, immigrants, and colonial people. Several authors also examine efforts to combat racism since the 1970s.

Download or read book Minuit written by Steve Spalding and published by Deep Vellum Publishing. This book was released on 2023-06-06 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How does a novel accrue value? How do certain new and unknown authors and their works make their way from obscurity into the pantheon of the greats, or—at least—the firmament of the stars?" Minuit examines the role played by French publishing house Editions de Minuit in altering the conception of literary France, not once but twice. The history of Les Editions de Minuit is an integral part of the history of the literary field; in Minuit, Spalding's work captures many of the cultural dimensions of literary production and dissemination at the height of France’s post-war intellectual and literary effervescence, and again, in the more recent period, when Minuit became the vehicle for French literature’s ‘postmodern’ turn.

Book Mobility Elites and Education in French Society of the Second Empire

Download or read book Mobility Elites and Education in French Society of the Second Empire written by P Harrigan and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 1980-09-09 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a unique historical source, this book examines the social origins, career expectations, and first jobs of 28,000 students in the “elitist” French secondary schools of the 1860s. Using sophisticated statistical analysis as well as conventional historical sources, the work concludes that schooling reached a wider audience than has been so far believed and that substantial social mobility occurred within the school system, but that family background, rather than educational factors, directed students’ career aspirations and achievements. It also argues that although education expanded in urban, industrialized areas, mobility did not increase in these areas. A final chapter reconsiders nineteenth–century thought concerning education in the light of findings about the social effects of schools.
