Information was obtained from published literature, site visits, and communications with knowledgeable individuals. Thermal effluent uses were discussed for controlled environment greenhouses, biological recycling of nutrients from livestock manures, soil heating and irrigation, environmental control for livestock housing, grain drying, food processing, as well as the culture of numerous aquatic organisms. A large number of research and feasibility studies have been conducted, but few commercial enterprises are utilizing thermal effluent. Interfacing problems, environmental and legal restrictions, along with insufficient technology, have not allowed widespread commercial application. Specific research needs were discussed.

Book excerpt: This report reviews and evaluates the economic impact on the fisheries of the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts of the United States of other human activities. Four types of impact were considered: production of oil and gas; direct fish mortalities caused by effluent; habitat deterioration; and closure of molluscan fisheries for health reasons. An attempt is made to obtain quantitative (dollar) estimates of the impacts, both negative and positive. The main quantifiable effects are of habitat destruction on species requiring estuaries and similar areas as nurseries (particularly in the Gulf and Middle Atlantic region), and molluscan fisheries (again the Gulf region is particularly affected). Fish kills seem highly variable from year to year.
