Book Shipping Operations Management

Download or read book Shipping Operations Management written by I.D. Visvikis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-09 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the management of ship operations, an activity that requires integrative knowledge and technical expertise that spans various disciplines. As such, ship operations personnel are expected to be well-versed with aspects of management, economics, engineering, technology and law. Further, ship operations management requires the ability to identify and neutralize threats and to manage risks and make decisions that will optimize costs and contribute to performance improvements. Despite the fundamental nature of ship operations management, no book has ever attempted to reconcile and compile a comprehensive body of knowledge, while pursuing a coherent, structured and systematic approach. This edited volume addresses that fundamental gap in the extant literature, and brings together a wealth of knowledge from experts in their respective fields. Concretely, it explores issues of organization, technical management, crewing and behavioral issues, chartering and post fixture, risk management, finance, legal aspects of international conventions and regulations, attainment of safety, security and marine insurance, as well as ocean governance and sustainability. As such, the book offers a vital reference guide for maritime companies and organizations, while also serving as a teaching supplement in academic and professional maritime programmes.

Book Reeds 21st Century Ship Management

Download or read book Reeds 21st Century Ship Management written by John W Dickie and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-04-17 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first modern title to cover the varied and complex world of ship management in the 21st century. Ship management has constantly had to evolve to take into account the advancements in technology as well as the demands of the shipping industry. Having internet access and email on board ship has meant that the ship manager has to possess certain sets of skills to function effectively in the post, including computer literacy. The emergence of large multi-national ship management companies has also changed how business is conducted, and this in turn means that the ship manager and tiers of management within the organization have had to evolve to cope with the demands of working with a multi-national workforce. Furthermore, since the mid-1980s there has been an ever expanding raft of legislation that is more restrictive for companies to meet, and a shrinking of profit margins has seen a shift in how companies are required to operate to survive. This book addresses the demands of 21st century ship management with the focus of the book as much on the people who manage ships as on the theory and practice of ship management.

Download or read book The Business of Shipping written by Lane C. Kendall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: T HIS VOL U M E has been written to describe the business side of a commercial enterprise whose field is the entire civilized world. Historically, the theory and knowledge of shipping management, as distinguished from the practical skills of seaman ship, have been transmitted from one generation to the next by word of mouth. Little has been put on paper, primarily because the finest exponents of the art of steamship management have been too busy with their day-to-day concerns to do so. The "working level" personnel often are superbly competent, but rarely qualify as liter ary craftsmen. It has been my aim, in preparing this analysis of the principles of the "business" of commercial shipping, to describe that which trans pires in the various divisions of a shipowning and operating organi zation. Insofar as possible, the procedures followed in the offices have been described and explained, as well as the underlying prin ciples of management by which their decisions are reached. In the process of learning the principles and practices that are set forth in these pages, I have spent ajoy-filled lifetime in associa tion with ships. It has been my good fortune to work in large and small American steamship offices, to operate a major cargo termi nal, to participate in establishing and putting into effect the policies of a world-girdling American steamship organization, and to teach young men these principles learned from experience as well as from precept.

Book Master s Handbook on Ship s Business

Download or read book Master s Handbook on Ship s Business written by Tuuli Messer and published by Cornell Maritime Press/Tidewater Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An invaluable aid to masters of ships for more than thirty years. Since the publication of the second edition more than a decade ago, many substantive changes have occurred in both the legal and operational environments affecting seagoing vessels and their crews. In response to these changes, this book has been completely updated and been renamed to include masters on all seagoing vessels, including oceangoing tugs. A complete guide for the newly appointed master, it is also useful to experienced masters as a checklist for the voluminous paperwork required in all phases of business aboard, including shipping articles, vessel documents and certificates, crew lists, customs and immigration requirements, accounting procedures, bills of lading, charter parties, vessel accidents, and logbooks. The master of a vessel is required to comply with state and federal laws that apply to the vessel and crew, the laws of foreign countries when the vessel is in their waters, and applicable international law. Mastering the details of these various jurisdictions can be intimidating, but this handbook demystifies the regulations and states the requirements in plain language. New topics in the third edition include vessel security, communications, and flag etiquette. Useful appendices give details on various agencies and contact personnel, acronyms and definitions, and medical evacuation and travelers' insurance companies.
