Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psalms possess an enduring fascination for us. For frankness, directness, intensity and intimacy, they are unrivaled in all of Scripture. Somehow the psalmists seem to have anticipated all our awe, desires and frustrations. No wonder Christians have used the Psalms in worship from the earliest times to the present. Yet the Psalms cause us difficulties when we look at them closely. Their poetry is unfamiliar in form. Many images they use are foreign to us today. And the psalmists sometimes express thoughts that seem unworthy of Scripture. Tremper Longman gives us the kind of help we need to overcome the distance between the psalmists' world and ours. He explains the various kinds of psalms, the way they were used in Hebrew worship and their relationship to the rest of the Old Testament. Then he looks at how Christians can appropriate their message and insights today. Turning to the art of Old Testament poetry, he explains the use of parallelism and imagery. Step-by-step suggestions for interpretating the psalms on our own are followed by exercises for further study and reflection. Also included is a helpful guide to commentaries on the Psalms. Here is a book for all those who long to better understand these mirrors of the soul.

Book The Way of the Righteous in the Muck of Life

Download or read book The Way of the Righteous in the Muck of Life written by Dale Ralph Davis and published by Christian Focus. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Righteous rely on God and the Psalms teach us how... It is through the opening of the Psalms that we discover foundational truth for right living. It is as children of God that we can learn to delight ourselves in our Father. The highly regarded writer, Dale Ralph Davis, leads readers through a careful study of Psalms 1-12 with clear, helpful application for daily life. The Psalmist begins with the most essential truth for mankind. Davis explains: "Nothing is so crucial as your belonging to the congregation of the righteous". It is in the Word of God, Davis points out, that "the righteous man gets signals for living". The delight of the righteous is in the "law" the teachings of the Lord. Indeed for those who belong to Him, meditating on God's Word is "the pursuit of pleasure", with the Psalms a rich resources for such as pursuit. As the first twelve Psalms continue, we see basic principles unfold with great clarity. Much like our troubles today, the Psalmist endured wickedness a around, a world hostile to the true God and on a very personal level-deceit and persecution from his enemies. Readers are pointed toward the glorious rule of the Messiah, to whom world belongs. In light of this realization, we are prepared to face all kinds of troubles that otherwise would cause despair. The righteous rely on God, and the Psalms teach us how. Davis, a noted Old Testament scholar, provides poignant insight to the original language of the text, guiding readers to deeper levels of understanding. Verse-by-verse exposition crystallizes the Psalmist's message, and cross-references show the passages in brother biblical context. Illustrations from history and from the author's personal experience help paint the truth in living color, demonstrating the relevancy of the text across cultures and throughout time. This is an ideal resource for small groups, as a teaching guide and for personal study. Begin the Psalms with Dale Ralph Davis. Book jacket.

Book Psalms Two Volume Set Evangelical Biblical Theology Commentary

Download or read book Psalms Two Volume Set Evangelical Biblical Theology Commentary written by James M. Hamilton and published by Lexham Academic. This book was released on 2021-12-08 with total page 1200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psalms are a carefully arranged collage of history, prophecy, and praise. James M. Hamilton provides a fresh translation and interpretation of the Psalms. This set combines both Volume 1 (Psalms 1-72) and Volume 2 (Psalms 73-150). Though commonly read in isolation, the Psalms are best read as a collage that tells a story of God's faithfulness to his people through his king. Hamilton observes the significance of the Psalter's intentional macro--structuring and intricate links across neighboring psalms. Hamilton interprets with a literary sensitivity and an eye towards canonical connections. Learn where the Psalms belong in the redemptive story, how they relate to God's people, and how they find their fulfillment in Jesus. The Evangelical Biblical Theology Commentary (EBTC) series locates each biblical book within redemptive history and illuminates its unique theological contributions. All EBTC volumes feature informed exegetical treatment of the biblical book and thorough discussion of its most important theological themes in relation to the canon--all in a style that is useful and accessible to students of Scripture.

Book excerpt: "This scholarly volume in the Concordia Commentary series covers Psalms 1-50. The author devotes meticulous attention to the grammar, structure, and literary artistry of these Hebrew poems. The exposition of each psalm includes textual notes on the Hebrew and commentary in two parts. The first part analyzes the flow of thought, emotions, and theological beliefs of the poet. The second part interprets the psalm within the larger context of the Old Testament and also the New Testament, attesting the same faith held by Christians in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It takes into consideration the history of interpretation and provides devotional applications to the individual and corporate life of prayer, trusting in God's eschatological salvation"--

Book A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Book of Psalms Volume I

Download or read book A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Book of Psalms Volume I written by Charles Augustus Briggs and published by Briggs Press. This book was released on 2007-03 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

Book excerpt: Although more than six hundred commentators have written on the Psalms, it has long been difficult to find a comprehensive treatment of this book of Scripture in one volume. Some expositions have excelled in scholarship, but, unlike the Psalter, in instructing the mind they have failed to exercise the heart. Dr Plumer's Commentary avoids this defect, the author believing that from the Psalms 'piety has derived more nourishment than from any other source,' and that his work should serve that same purpose. In 1211 pages he gives both exposition and doctrinal and practical remarks and presents in readable form a great wealth of material drawn from all the leading commentators who had gone before him. In the opinion of Dr John Macleod of Edinburgh, he succeeded in producing the best single volume on this book of Scripture.

Book Psalms

  • Author : James Luther Mays
  • Publisher : Westminster John Knox Press
  • Release : 2011-01-01
  • ISBN : 0664234399
  • Pages : 477 pages

Download or read book Psalms written by James Luther Mays and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psalms have a double identity. They are scripture and liturgy. They compose a book of the Bible and are found in our hymnals and books of worship and prayer. When we think of them in historical perspective, another identity emerges. They are the liturgical poetry of ancient Israel, texts with a history of composition and use before they became scripture. A commentary in this Interpretation series needs to keep all three identities in view. That puts some strain on the commentator's task. The attempt to interpret the Psalms in awareness of the depth in their identity explains some things about the commentary and its writing. - Preface.
