Book Commentaries on the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah and the Lamentations

Download or read book Commentaries on the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah and the Lamentations written by Jean Calvin and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-06-07 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean (eng. John) Calvin developed his theology in his biblical commentaries as well as his sermons and treatises, but the most concise expression of his views is found in his magnum opus, the Institutes of the Christian Religion. He intended that the book be used as a summary of his views on Christian theology and that it be read in conjunction with his commentaries. Calvin provided many of the foundational documents for reformed churches, including documents on the catechism, the liturgy, and church governance. He also produced several confessions of faith in order to unite the churches. Calvin produced commentaries on most of the books of the Bible. His first commentary on Romans was published in 1540, and he planned to write commentaries on the entire New Testament. Six years passed before he wrote his second, a commentary on I Corinthians, but after that he devoted more attention to reaching his goal. Within four years he had published commentaries on all the Pauline epistles, and he also revised the commentary on Romans. He then turned his attention to the general epistles, dedicating them to Edward VI of England. By 1555 he had completed his work on the New Testament, finishing with the Acts and the Gospels (he omitted only the brief second and third Epistles of John and the Book of Revelation). For the Old Testament, he wrote commentaries on Isaiah, the books of the Pentateuch, the Psalms, and Joshua. The material for the commentaries often originated from lectures to students and ministers that he reworked for publication.

Book Jeremiah and Lamentations

Download or read book Jeremiah and Lamentations written by Roland Kenneth Harrison and published by London : Tyndale Press. This book was released on 1973 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two books which comprise this commentary deal with one of the most tragic events in the life of the Chosen People. The first gives the reader a picture of the carefree Judeans of the pre-exilic period as they indulged shamelessly in the grossest forms of idolatry, ignored the many warnings of impending destruction given by their compatriot Jeremiah, and finally brought their long-promised ruin down on their heads. The second book shows something of the devastation and agony which accompanied divine judgment on national sin when Jerusalem fell in 587 BC. Together they formulate a theology commensurate with the nature of the catastrophe, but by their insistence upon the ethos of the Sinai covenant, they point the way through suffering to spiritual renewal. Relevant archaeological discoveries have been brought to bear upon the material under consideration, and the most significant textual problems have been discussed in the appropriate places in the commentary sections.

Download or read book The Book of Jeremiah written by John Goldingay and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 913 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the Major Prophets, Jeremiah is perhaps the least straightforward. It is variously comprised of stories about the prophet Jeremiah, exchanges between Jeremiah and Yahweh, and messages directly from Yahweh—meaning a consciousness of form is essential to the understanding of its content. At times it is written in poetry, resembling Isaiah, while at other times it is written in prose, more similar to Ezekiel. And it is without doubt the darkest and most threatening of the Major Prophets, inviting comparisons to Amos and Hosea. John Goldingay, a widely respected biblical scholar who has written extensively on the entire Old Testament, navigates these complexities in the same spirit as other volumes of the New International Commentary on the Old Testament series—rooted in Jeremiah’s historical context but with an eye always trained on its meaning and use as Christian Scripture. After a thorough introduction that explores matters of background, composition, and theology, Goldingay provides an original translation and verse-by-verse commentary of all fifty-two chapters, making this an authoritative and indispensable reference for scholars and pastors as they engage with Jeremiah from a contemporary Christian standpoint.

Book Jeremiah and Lamentations

Download or read book Jeremiah and Lamentations written by John Andrew Dearman and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2002 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The books of Jeremiah and Lamentations cannot be separated from the political conditions of ancient Judah. Beginning with the righteous king Josiah, who ushered in a time of glorious but brief religious reform, Jeremiah reflects the close tie between spiritual and political prosperity or disaster, between the actions and heart of Judah and her kings and their fortunes as a nation. While few of us today have any firsthand understanding of what it means to live in a theocracy, the central theme of Jeremiah and Lamentations remains clear and still holds true: God first, politics second. The words, prayers, and poems of 'the weeping prophet' serve to realign us with God's priorities, turning us from evil and encouraging us to pursue God and his ways. With emotion and spiritual depth, these prophetic writings beckon us toward a spiritual integrity that can still affect the course of individuals and nations today. Most Bible commentaries take us on a one-way trip from our world to the world of the Bible. But they leave us there, assuming that we can somehow make the return journey on our own. They focus on the original meaning of the passage but don't discuss its contemporary application. The information they offer is valuable--but the job is only half done! The NIV Application Commentary Series helps bring both halves of the interpretive task together. This unique, award-winning series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into our postmodern context. It explains not only what the Bible meant but also how it speaks powerfully today.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentaries on the Books of the Prophet Jeremiah and the Lamentations, Vol. 4 This and the next chapter contain, as we shall see, a most profitable truth; and that the people might be the more atten tive, God introduced these prophecies by a-preface. Jeremiah spoke many things which afterwards, as it has elsewhere appeared, had been collected and inserted in one volume by the priests and Levites but God reminds us in these words, that the prophecies which are to follow respecting the liberation of the people, were especially to be remembered.
