Download or read book Thank You for Coming to Hattiesburg written by Todd Barry and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “With this charming, sardonic debut, stand up comedian and actor Todd Barry makes readers laugh as hard as the audiences at his shows” (Publishers Weekly) in this hilarious book of travel essays from his time on tour in the US, Canada, and Israel. Hello. It’s Todd Barry. Yes, the massively famous comedian. I have billions of fans all over the world, so I do my fair share of touring. While I love doing shows in the big cities (New York, Philadelphia), I also enjoy a good secondary market (Ithaca, Bethlehem). Performing in these smaller places can be great because not all entertainers stop there on tour; they don’t expect to see you. They’re appreciative. They say things like “Thank you for coming to Hattiesburg” as much as they say “Nice show.” And almost every town has their version of a hipster coffee shop, so I can get in my comfort zone. My original plan was to book one secondary market show in all fifty states, in about a year, but that idea was funnier than anything in my act. So, instead of all fifty states in a year, my agent booked multiple shows in a lot of states, plus Israel and Canada. Thank You for Coming to Hattiesburg is part tour diary, part travel guide, and part memoir (Yes, memoir. Just like the thing presidents and former child stars get to write). Follow me on my journey of small clubs, and the occasional big amphitheater. Watch me make a promoter clean the dressing room toilet in Connecticut, see me stare at beached turtles in Maui, and see how I react when Lars from Metallica shows up to see me at a rec center in Northern California. I’d love to tell you more, but I need to go book a flight to Evansville, Indiana.

Download or read book Coming to Terms written by Victoria MacDonald and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addiction is a beast that weaves through generations, wounding innocent children despite their parents’ love. Victoria’s parents’ alcoholism affected her throughout her childhood, and she perpetuated many of the same experiences and patterns in her own adult life, and later, in her parenting. Coming to Terms is the true story of Victoria’s journey through addiction and recovery, including her positive experience with Twelve Step programs, her husband’s cancer diagnosis, and her son’s death by overdose. Told in a series of flashbacks to both her childhood and her days as a young parent, Victoria’s sensitive spirit and tender hope are sure to evoke strong emotion, encouraging readers to continue to break free of their own generational cycles of trauma and strive for a better future. Recovery is possible for everyone, and can help even those deeply struggling with addiction to come to terms with the often tragic and traumatic events that may have occurred in their past.

Download or read book Coming to Grips with Higher Education written by Michael T. Nietzel and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American university faces many challenges. It has become too costly and inefficient. It fails too many students. It spends too much time and money on matters that should not be its priorities. It clings to policies and practices that need to go away. And it is too disconnected from the students and communities it must serve. This book proposes several changes to standard policies in our colleges and universities that will sharpen their missions, redirect funding to the highest priorities, improve student learning and attainment, redefine faculty engagement, slow down spending on amenities, and reduce the excesses of intercollegiate athletics. The recommended reforms remain true to the essential academic values embraced by the academy, but at the same time they recognize and respond to the new realities facing higher education.
Download or read book Guess Who s Coming to Dinner Now written by Angela D Dillard and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2001-02-01 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comparative analysis of minority conservatism In Guess Who's Coming to Dinner Now? Angela Dillard offers the first comparative analysis of a conservatism which today cuts across the boundaries of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. To be an African-American and a conservative, or a Latino who is also a conservative and a homosexual, is to occupy an awkward and contested political position. Dillard explores the philosophies, politics, and motivation of minority conservatives such as Ward Connerly, Glenn Loury, Linda Chavez, Clarence Thomas, and Bruce Bawer, as well as their tepid reception by both the Left and Right. Welcomed cautiously by the conservative movement, they have also frequently been excoriated by those African Americans, Latinos, women, and homosexuals who view their conservatism as betrayal. Dillard's comprehensive study, among the first to take the history and political implications of multicultural conservatism seriously, is a vital source for understanding contemporary American conservatism in all its forms.
Download or read book Coming to Terms with Wall Street written by Gary B. Helms and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coming to Terms with Wall Street is a spoof, a send-up of investment business and the foibles revealed in its peculiar language. It provides satirical definitions for phrases used by Wall Streeters and aspiring financial cognoscenti. Written by an insider for insiders, it is funny because even practitioners themselves know that the jargon is often both pompous and self-serving. It is funny because it is almost serious, and pulls out the rug only at the last minute, leaving the reader a little bit relieved that he wasnt missing the point after all. Like any good reference work, the dictionary is intended to encourage browsing. There is something for every taste, and something to offend (mildly) almost everyone. Most importantly, it is almost impossible for either the lay reader or the professional not to learn from the dictionary. Beneath the humor and irreverent attitude is the oft-repeated message that the buyer should beware, and that the all-knowing advisor may not know very much at all.
