Download or read book Coming Out Coming Home written by Michael C. LaSala and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-24 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery that a child is lesbian or gay can send shockwaves through a family. A mother will question how she's raised her son; a father will worry that his daughter will experience discrimination. From the child's perspective, gay and lesbian youth fear their families will reject them and that they will lose financial and emotional support. All in all, learning a child is gay challenges long-held views about sexuality and relationships, and the resulting uncertainty can produce feelings of anger, resentment, and concern. Through a qualitative, multicultural study of sixty-five gay and lesbian children and their parents, Michael LaSala, a leading expert on this issue, outlines effective, practice-tested interventions for families in transition. His research reveals surprising outcomes, such as learning that a child is homosexual can improve familial relationships, including father-child relationships, even if a parent reacts strongly or negatively to the revelation. By confronting feelings of depression, anxiety, and grief head on, LaSala formulates the best approach for practitioners who hope to reestablish intimacy among family members and preserve family connections as well as individual autonomy well into the child's maturation. By restricting his study to parents and children of the same family, LaSala accurately captures the reciprocal effects of family interactions, identifying them as targets for effective treatment. Coming Out, Coming Home is also a valuable text for families, enabling adjustment through relatable scenarios and analyses.
Download or read book Coming Out Coming Home written by Kenneth Burr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coming Out, Coming Home has the potential for increasing spiritual growth and development in our society. Although many books have been written about gay rights and pro-gay theologies, few have provided people with an opportunity to enlarge belief systems advocating Scriptural principles while embracing the possibility of gay spirituality. In our present culture many people feel the need to split the personal from their professional lives in order to maintain proper boundaries, and the private from the public in order to gain the acceptance of others. This book provides the opportunity for readers to find a deeper connection with themselves and others as you savor the stories of sexual minorities who have sought meaningful connections between their spirituality and sexuality. Expect to experience something profound when you find formerly rigid boundaries between God and gays begin to relax. Your God might be much larger than you ever imagined!

Book excerpt: "I couldn’t put the book down until I finished it!" Finn Murphy isn’t like his brothers. While they started an organization dedicated to off-the-books justice, Finn traveled the world. While they got rich, Finn kept his life simple, traveling solo and trying to forget the family tragedy that shaped them all. But when his host family in a small village is unexplainably slaughtered, Finn can’t let it go. Returning home after over six years isn’t easy, but his brothers are the only ones he knows who can help him find answers. No problem: just a quick stop in Boston to figure things out, then he’s back on the road. It’s a promise he means to keep — until he lays eyes on Elise Berenger. Elise Berenger has been forged by fire. Kidnapped by a transnational trafficking ring and rescued by the Murphy brothers, Elise has spent the last two years in therapy, working at a small boutique and taking random classes at community college. She can finally sleep without nightmares (most nights), but she’s no closer to figuring out what to do with her life now than she was when she was rescued. One thing she does know: she has no desire to be in a relationship. Not after everything that happened to her. But that’s before Finn Murphy — bearded, tattooed, and very, very hot — appears in the kitchen of the shared Murphy house. Soon the Murphys discover the village where Finn was staying was hiding a deadly secret. Energized by the investigation and Finn’s presence, Elise finally gives in to their sizzling chemistry. But when they come up against the barriers of their respective pasts, they’ll have to decide if finding a home in each other is worth the price of love. _________________________________ ★★★★★ "Finally, the story I've been waiting for!" ★★★★★ "Sizzling chemistry!" ★★★★★ "Totally Intriguing Story Line! 5 Stars!" ★★★★★ "While their love simmers and heats up the pages, the intrigue builds!" ★★★★★ "I think this might be my favorite couple yet." ★★★★★ "So amazing on a number of levels!" ★★★★★ "Great read - highly recommend!"

Download or read book Lord I m Coming Home written by John Forrest and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lord I'm Coming Home focuses on a small, white, rural fishing community on the southern reaches of the Great Dismal Swamp in North Carolina. By means of a new kind of anthropological fieldwork, John Forrest seeks to document the entire aesthetic experience of a group of people, showing the aesthetic to be an "everyday experience and not some rarefied and pure behavior reserved for an artistic elite." The opening chapter of the book is a vivid fictional narrative of a typical day in "Tidewater," presented from the perspective of one fisherman. In the following two chapters the author sets forth the philosophical and anthropological foundations of his book, paying particular attention to problems of defining "aesthetic," to methodological concerns, and to the natural landscape of his field site. Reviewing his own experience as both participant and observer, he then describes in scrupulous detail the aesthetic forms in four areas of Tidewater life: home, work, church, and leisure. People use these forms, Forrest shows, to establish personal and group identities, facilitate certain kinds of interactions while inhibiting others, and cue appropriate behavior. His concluding chapter deals with the different life cycles of men and women, insider-outsider relations, secular and sacred domains, the image and metaphor of "home," and the essential role that aesthetics plays in these spheres. The first ethnography to evoke the full aesthetic life of a community, Lord I'm Coming Home will be important reading not only for anthropologists but also for scholars and students in the fields of American studies, art, folklore, and sociology.
