Before achieving this unusual record, Peter Duffy had already acquired considerable experience in aircraft with more modest qualifications. After learning to fly in Canada during the Second World War; & having returned to Britain for a brief spell in R.A.F. Uniform, he started his commercial flying with, at first, small companies, & moved on to British South American Airlines (B.S.A.A.), flying Avro Yorks, Lancastrians & the notorious Tudors. When that corporation was absolved into British Overseas Airways Corporation (B.O.A.C) he flew Argonauts (Douglas Canadair DC-4Ms) before becoming one of the select few who were chosen to become the world's first airline jet pilots in 1952. When the Comet 1s were grounded, it was back to the propellers again - Douglas "Seven Seas" - & then came the Comet 4s. In all these airliners he gained the world-wide flying experience that was necessary to join the even more select group of airline supersonic pilots who began the Concorde routes in 1976. This autobiography, therefore, covers a whole history of commercial flying, from the struggling post-war British charter airlines to supreme level of supersonic training & check captaincy. This is a well told story, by a pilot who started to fly in Fairchild Cornells & Airspeed Oxfords, peered through Scottosh mists in the venerable de Havilland Rapides, led a charmed life in the Tudors (including the Berlin Airlift) & who flew regularly across the Atlantic in less than four hours. This is a pilot's book; yet it is one that is full of absorbing interest for the layman passenger too. As his colleague, Tony Meadows, observes in his Foreword, this is an opportunity to share some delightful & occasionally exciting memories of a remarkable aviation career.

The available works either illustrate relatively short periods in the history of physical cometology or portray a landscape view without adequate details. The present study is an attempt to review – with more details – the major physical theories of comets in the past two millennia, from Aristotle to Whipple. My research, however, did not begin with antiquity. The basic question from which this project originated was a simple inquiry about the cosmic identity of comets at the dawn of the astronomical revolution: how did natural philosophers and astronomers define the nature and place of a new category of celestial objects – comets – after Brahe’s estimation of cometary distances? It was from this turning point in the history of cometary theories that I expanded my studies in both the pre-modern and modern eras. A study starting merely from Brahe and ending with Newton, without covering classical and medieval thought about comets, would be incomplete and leave the fascinating achievements of post-Newtonian cometology unexplored.

Schechner Genuth delineates the evolution of people's understanding of comets, showing that until the seventeenth century, all members of society dreaded comets as heaven-sent portents of plague, flood, civil disorder, and other calamities. Although these beliefs became spurned as "vulgar superstitions" by the elite before the end of the century, she shows that they were nonetheless absorbed into the science of Newton and Halley, contributing to their theories in subtle yet profound ways. Schechner weaves together many strands of thought: views of comets as signs and causes of social and physical changes; vigilance toward monsters and prodigies as indicators of God's will; Christian eschatology; scientific interpretations of Scripture; astrological prognostication and political propaganda; and celestial mechanics and astrophysics.
