Para conseguir su objetivo, tiene establecidos10 principios que todo miembro debe de cumplir donde se engloban temas desde unas condiciones dignas de trabajo, igualdad y no discriminación, al compromiso del cuidado por el medio ambiente. En este trabajo mediante un análisis de las diferentes asociaciones del comercio justo, destacando Fairtrade International, se estudia su conexión con la Agenda 2030 y los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible en cuanto a su compromiso social y medioambiental. Además, se valoran las condiciones laborales de los trabajadores tomando como referencia los convenios de la Organización Internacional del Trabajo y, por último, se analiza en qué medida el comercio justo ayuda a la igualdad de género en el empleoy el empoderamiento de la mujer.
