Download or read book The Acquisition of Spanish written by Silvina A. Montrul and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004-12-23 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book on the acquisition of Spanish that provides a state-of-the-art comprehensive overview of Spanish morphosyntactic development in monolingual and bilingual situations. Its content is organized around key grammatical themes that form the empirical base of research in generative grammar: nominal and verbal inflectional morphology, subject and object pronouns, complex structures involving movement (topicalizations, questions, relative clauses), and aspects of verb meaning that have consequences for syntax. The book argues that Universal Grammar constrains all instances of language acquisition and that there is a fundamental continuity between monolingual, bilingual, child and adult early grammatical systems. While stressing their similarities with respect to linguistic representations and processes, the book also considers important differences between these three acquisition situations with respect to the outcome of acquisition. It is also shown that many linguistic properties of Spanish are acquired earlier than in English and other languages. This book is a must read for those interested in the acquisition of Spanish from different theoretical perspectives as well as those working on the acquisition of other languages in different contexts.

Download or read book Optimal Control and Estimation written by Robert F. Stengel and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 1994-09-20 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An excellent introduction to optimal control and estimation theory and its relationship with LQG design. . . . invaluable as a reference for those already familiar with the subject." — Automatica. This highly regarded graduate-level text provides a comprehensive introduction to optimal control theory for stochastic systems, emphasizing application of its basic concepts to real problems. The first two chapters introduce optimal control and review the mathematics of control and estimation. Chapter 3 addresses optimal control of systems that may be nonlinear and time-varying, but whose inputs and parameters are known without error. Chapter 4 of the book presents methods for estimating the dynamic states of a system that is driven by uncertain forces and is observed with random measurement error. Chapter 5 discusses the general problem of stochastic optimal control, and the concluding chapter covers linear time-invariant systems. Robert F. Stengel is Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University, where he directs the Topical Program on Robotics and Intelligent Systems and the Laboratory for Control and Automation. He was a principal designer of the Project Apollo Lunar Module control system. "An excellent teaching book with many examples and worked problems which would be ideal for self-study or for use in the classroom. . . . The book also has a practical orientation and would be of considerable use to people applying these techniques in practice." — Short Book Reviews, Publication of the International Statistical Institute. "An excellent book which guides the reader through most of the important concepts and techniques. . . . A useful book for students (and their teachers) and for those practicing engineers who require a comprehensive reference to the subject." — Library Reviews, The Royal Aeronautical Society.
Download or read book Nine Centuries of Spanish Literature Dual Language written by Seymour Resnick and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2012-10-31 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rich sampling of Spanish poetry, prose, and drama includes more than seventy selections from the works of more than forty writers, from the anonymous author of the great medieval epic The Poem of the Cid to such 20th-century masters as Miguel de Unamuno. The original Spanish text of each work appears with an excellent English translation on the facing page. The anthology begins with carefully selected passages from such medieval classics as The Book of Good Love by the Archpriest of Hita and Spain's first great prose work, the stories of Count Lucanor by Juan Manuel. Works by writers of the Spanish Renaissance follow, among them poems by the Marqués de Santillana and excerpts from the great dialogue novel La Celestina by Fernando de Rojas. Spain's Golden age, ca. 1550-1650, an era which produced its great writers, is represented by the mystical poems of St. Teresa, passages from Cervantes' Don Quixote and scenes from Tirso de Molina's The Love-Rogue, the drama that introduced the character of Don Juan to the world, along with other well-known works of the period. A cavalcade of stirring poems, plays and prose selections represent Spain's rare literary achievements of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The translations were chosen for their accuracy and fidelity to the originals. Among the translators are Lord Byron, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Edward FitzGerald and John Masefield. As a treasury of masterly writing, as a guide for the student who wants to improve his or her language skills and as a compact survey of Spanish literature, this excellent anthology will provide hours of pleasure and fruitful study.
