A dispetto della crisi economica che essi stessi hanno innescato, i mercati finanziari hanno acquistato un potere sempre crescente. Lungi dall’essere divenuti l’oggetto di riflessione e di riforma, essi continuano a dettare legge. Impongono politiche economiche agli Stati, depongono governi che giudicano inadempienti, abrogano diritti che vedono come intralci, scardinano patti sociali, ridisegnano equilibri e alleanze internazionali. Il tutto senza che nessuno si assuma personalmente e politicamente la responsabilità di tali decisioni. Il dominio dei mercati è politicamente illegittimo, economicamente dannoso, umanamente aberrante. Bisogna venirne fuori. Non si tratta tuttavia di «abolire la finanza»,ma di impegnarsi nel progetto di cambiarne radicalmente la forma. Sul piano pratico alcuni germi di cambiamento stanno già emergendo. Assistiamo al ritorno a pratiche finanziarie e bancarie fino a poco tempo fa considerate obsolete, ma che ora mostrano tutta la loro solidità, come le forme di credito cooperativo e di finanza senza interesse. D’altra parte, emergono spontaneamente altre pratiche, come i sistemi di compensazione, locali e internazionali. Quello che invece manca ancora è una prospettiva d’insieme, teorica e politica, nella quale inquadrare le pratiche vecchie e nuove. Questo saggio è dedicato a pensare e progettare un’altra finanza.

Long thought to have been lost, his original Polybius has now been recomposed by drawing on three manuscript copies: the mock-up used by Palladio to plan the edition, rediscovered in the London British Library in 1977; a second copy found in Florence in 1986 and a third exemplar only very recently found in the New York Public Library. Here the reproductions of the 43 etchings for the Polybius have been accompanied by 42 etchings which Palladio dedicated to Caesar's deeds. This offers us a complete picture of his effort to reconstruct those excellent features of ancient warfare on which Palladio wished to base his own proposals for reforming the contemporary Venetian militia, as well as to give a different point of view on the history of architecture. Of course, it will not be possible to argue for every single part of a philosophical building: to do so would mean to embark in a virtually endless enterprise. Accordingly, some of the parts of a philosophical building will have to be taken from the literature on the subject as 'ready made' or 'semi-finished' elements, while others will be argued for in the course of building. This is what happened in my work too. In some cases (for in stance, in the case of epistemic relativism), my concern was to illustrate theses which I believed to be sufficiently consolidated, rather than to ar gue for them. In other cases - where I was directly engaged in building the theory that I want to fonnulate - I did exactly the opposite. This is what I have tried to achieve, for example, for those proper architraves of my construction, viz. the connection between scepticism and metaphysi cal realism. and the thesis of the nonnative value of the fundamental epistemological notions (truth, objectivity, and rationality).
