Book Listen for the Singing

Download or read book Listen for the Singing written by Jean Little and published by Scholastic Canada. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A companion to the beloved classic From Anna! Just as Anna is about to enter a new school, she hears news on Papa's radio — Canada is at war with Germany. What will that mean for the Soldens, who immigrated from Germany just a few years ago? She soon finds out. Customers stop shopping at Papa's store, a teacher in her school bullies any students with German surnames, and Rudi is threatening to enlist, even though he is torn about fighting against the people of his homeland. He too hates Hitler, but wants to find a way to fight that would not pit him against boys he grew up with. Being partially blind is hard enough for Anna, but starting a new school, and fearing for Rudi's safety, challenge her. There has never been a more frightening time for her family, especially when they learn that Anna's beloved Aunt Tania has been arrested by the Nazis, and when Rudi comes home from the Navy blinded. Nobody can seem to pull him out of his sadness . . . until Anna herself finds a way to reach through to him. First published in 1977, Listen for the Singing won the Canada Council Award for Children's Literature (the forerunner of the Governor General's Award).

Book excerpt: “Discover some curiosities and some genuinely fascinating, powerfully resonant works” in this Book Riot 50 Must-Reads of Slavic Literature selection (Kirkus Reviews). A constant thread woven throughout the history of Russian literature is that of fantasy and an escape from the bounds of realism. Worlds Apart is the first single-volume anthology that explores this fascinating and dominant theme of Russian literature—from its origins in the provincial folk tale, through its emergence in the Romantic period in the tales of Pushkin, Lermontov, and Turgenev, to its contemporary incarnation under the clouds of authoritarianism, revolution, mechanization, and modernization—with all-new translations of the key literary masterpieces that reveal the depth and ingenuity of the Russian imagination as it evolved over a period of tumultuous political, social, and technological upheaval. Alexander Levitsky, perhaps the world’s foremost expert on this genre, has selected and provided engaging and informative introductions to the selections that simultaneously represent the works of Russia’s best authors and reveal the dominant themes of her history. The authors range from familiar figures—Pushkin, Lermontov, Turgenev, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Bulgakov, and Bely—to writers practically unknown outside the Slavic world such as Derzhavin, Bulgarin, Kuprin, and Pilniak. Worlds Apart is an awe-provoking anthology with a compelling appeal both to the fantasy enthusiast and anyone with an abiding interest in Russian history and culture.

Book The Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Garden

Download or read book The Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Garden written by Miranda Phillips and published by Tate. This book was released on 2002-10 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English artist Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975) created a unique combination of subtropical garden and sculpture park at Trewyn in St.Ives -- a haven of peace that acted as a showplace for her sculpture, a working environment, and an opportunity for Hepworth to pursue her other great love, gardening. This book is a beautiful record of the plants and sculptures at Trewyn throughout the seasons; it explores the evolution of the garden, its purpose, the placement of the works, and the relationship between Hepworth's abstract sculptures and the natural forms that surround them. With specially commissioned photographs taken in all seasons, two essays on Hepworth's work at Trewyn, and full descriptions of both plants and sculptures, this is a wonderful addition to the literature on St.Ives and on Barbara Hepworth.

Book The Lost Words

    Book Details:
  • Author :
  • Publisher : Edition Peters
  • Release : 2022-05
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 68 pages

Download or read book The Lost Words written by and published by Edition Peters. This book was released on 2022-05 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lost Words by composer James Burton takes its inspiration and text from the award-winning 'cultural phenomenon' and book of the same name by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris: a book that was, in turn, a creative response to the removal of everyday nature words like acorn, newt and otter from a new edition of a widely used children's dictionary. Both the book and Burton's 32-minute work, which is written in 12 short movements for upper-voice choir in up to 3 voice parts (with either orchestral or piano accompaniment), celebrates each lost word with a beautiful poem or 'spell', magically brought to life in Burton's music. At its heart, the work delivers a powerful message about the need to close the gap between childhood and the natural world. Burton's piece was co-commissioned by the Hallé Concerts Society for the Hallé Children's Choir and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The piano accompaniment version was premiered at the Tanglewood Festival in 2019 by the Boston Symphony Children's Choir, of which Burton is founder and director. The Hallé Children's Choir will premiere the orchestral version of the full work in Manchester, UK, post-pandemic. Vocal Score Co-commission by Boston Symphony and Hallé Concerts Society for their respective Children's Choirs. Two versions - with orchestral or with piano accompaniment. The vocal score is the same for both versions. James Burton is a composer but also a conductor. He is conductor of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and choral director of the Boston Symphony. The book The Lost Words, exquisitely designed, has won multiple awards and is an international best-seller. The vocal score includes Jackie Morris's beautiful imagery in its cover design.
