Book Introduction to Combinatorics

Download or read book Introduction to Combinatorics written by Walter D. Wallis and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-12-12 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Is Combinatorics Anyway? Broadly speaking, combinatorics is the branch of mathematics dealing with different ways of selecting objects from a set or arranging objects. It tries to answer two major kinds of questions, namely, counting questions: how many ways can a selection or arrangement be chosen with a particular set of properties; and structural questions: does there exist a selection or arrangement of objects with a particular set of properties? The authors have presented a text for students at all levels of preparation. For some, this will be the first course where the students see several real proofs. Others will have a good background in linear algebra, will have completed the calculus stream, and will have started abstract algebra. The text starts by briefly discussing several examples of typical combinatorial problems to give the reader a better idea of what the subject covers. The next chapters explore enumerative ideas and also probability. It then moves on to enumerative functions and the relations between them, and generating functions and recurrences., Important families of functions, or numbers and then theorems are presented. Brief introductions to computer algebra and group theory come next. Structures of particular interest in combinatorics: posets, graphs, codes, Latin squares, and experimental designs follow. The authors conclude with further discussion of the interaction between linear algebra and combinatorics. Features Two new chapters on probability and posets. Numerous new illustrations, exercises, and problems. More examples on current technology use A thorough focus on accuracy Three appendices: sets, induction and proof techniques, vectors and matrices, and biographies with historical notes, Flexible use of MapleTM and MathematicaTM

Book Combinatorics The Art of Counting

Download or read book Combinatorics The Art of Counting written by Bruce E. Sagan and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2020-10-16 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a gentle introduction to the enumerative part of combinatorics suitable for study at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level. In addition to covering all the standard techniques for counting combinatorial objects, the text contains material from the research literature which has never before appeared in print, such as the use of quotient posets to study the Möbius function and characteristic polynomial of a partially ordered set, or the connection between quasisymmetric functions and pattern avoidance. The book assumes minimal background, and a first course in abstract algebra should suffice. The exposition is very reader friendly: keeping a moderate pace, using lots of examples, emphasizing recurring themes, and frankly expressing the delight the author takes in mathematics in general and combinatorics in particular.

Book Geometry and Combinatorics

Download or read book Geometry and Combinatorics written by J. J. Seidel and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometry and Combinatorics: Selected Works of J. J. Seidel brings together some of the works of J. J. Seidel in geometry and combinatorics. Seidel's selected papers are divided into four areas: graphs and designs; lines with few angles; matrices and forms; and non-Euclidean geometry. A list of all of Seidel's publications is included. Comprised of 29 chapters, this book begins with a discussion on equilateral point sets in elliptic geometry, followed by an analysis of strongly regular graphs of L2-type and of triangular type. The reader is then introduced to strongly regular graphs with (-1, 1, 0) adjacency matrix having eigenvalue 3; graphs related to exceptional root systems; and equiangular lines. Subsequent chapters deal with the regular two-graph on 276 vertices; the congruence order of the elliptic plane; equi-isoclinic subspaces of Euclidean spaces; and Wielandt's visibility theorem. This monograph will be of interest to students and practitioners in the field of mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the mini-workshop Renormalization, held in December 2006, and the conference Combinatorics and Physics, held in March 2007. Both meetings took place at the Max-Planck-Institut fur Mathematik in Bonn, Germany. Research papers in the volume provide an overview of applications of combinatorics to various problems, such as applications to Hopf algebras, techniques to renormalization problems in quantum field theory, as well as combinatorial problems appearing in the context of the numerical integration of dynamical systems, in noncommutative geometry and in quantum gravity. In addition, it contains several introductory notes on renormalization Hopf algebras, Wilsonian renormalization and motives.

Book Algebraic Extremal and Metric Combinatorics 1986

Download or read book Algebraic Extremal and Metric Combinatorics 1986 written by M. Deza and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-08-25 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a comprehensive overview of the present state of progress in three related areas of combinatorics. It comprises selected papers from a conference held at the University of Montreal. Topics covered in the articles include association schemes, extremal problems, combinatorial geometrics and matroids, and designs. All the papers contain new results and many are extensive surveys of particular areas of research. Particularly valuable will be Ivanov's paper on recent Soviet research in these areas. Consequently this volume will be of great attraction to all researchers in combinatorics and to research students requiring a rapid introduction to some of the open problems in the subject.

Book Introduction to Combinatorics

Download or read book Introduction to Combinatorics written by A. B. Slomson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-02-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth in digital devices, which require discrete formulation of problems, has revitalized the role of combinatorics, making it indispensable to computer science. Furthermore, the challenges of new technologies have led to its use in industrial processes, communications systems, electrical networks, organic chemical identification, coding theory, economics, and more. With a unique approach, Introduction to Combinatorics builds a foundation for problem-solving in any of these fields. Although combinatorics deals with finite collections of discrete objects, and as such differs from continuous mathematics, the two areas do interact. The author, therefore, does not hesitate to use methods drawn from continuous mathematics, and in fact shows readers the relevance of abstract, pure mathematics to real-world problems. The author has structured his chapters around concrete problems, and as he illustrates the solutions, the underlying theory emerges. His focus is on counting problems, beginning with the very straightforward and ending with the complicated problem of counting the number of different graphs with a given number of vertices. Its clear, accessible style and detailed solutions to many of the exercises, from routine to challenging, provided at the end of the book make Introduction to Combinatorics ideal for self-study as well as for structured coursework.

Book Combinatorial Algorithms on Words

Download or read book Combinatorial Algorithms on Words written by Alberto Apostolico and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combinatorial Algorithms on Words refers to the collection of manipulations of strings of symbols (words) - not necessarily from a finite alphabet - that exploit the combinatorial properties of the logical/physical input arrangement to achieve efficient computational performances. The model of computation may be any of the established serial paradigms (e.g. RAM's, Turing Machines), or one of the emerging parallel models (e.g. PRAM ,WRAM, Systolic Arrays, CCC). This book focuses on some of the accomplishments of recent years in such disparate areas as pattern matching, data compression, free groups, coding theory, parallel and VLSI computation, and symbolic dynamics; these share a common flavor, yet ltave not been examined together in the past. In addition to being theoretically interest ing, these studies have had significant applications. It happens that these works have all too frequently been carried out in isolation, with contributions addressing similar issues scattered throughout a rather diverse body of literature. We felt that it would be advantageous to both current and future researchers to collect this work in a sin gle reference. It should be clear that the book's emphasis is on aspects of combinatorics and com plexity rather than logic, foundations, and decidability. In view of the large body of research and the degree of unity already achieved by studies in the theory of auto mata and formal languages, we have allocated very little space to them.

Book Elements of Combinatorial and Differential Topology

Download or read book Elements of Combinatorial and Differential Topology written by V. V. Prasolov and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2022-03-25 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern topology uses very diverse methods. This book is devoted largely to methods of combinatorial topology, which reduce the study of topological spaces to investigations of their partitions into elementary sets, and to methods of differential topology, which deal with smooth manifolds and smooth maps. Many topological problems can be solved by using either of these two kinds of methods, combinatorial or differential. In such cases, both approaches are discussed. One of the main goals of this book is to advance as far as possible in the study of the properties of topological spaces (especially manifolds) without employing complicated techniques. This distinguishes it from the majority of other books on topology. The book contains many problems; almost all of them are supplied with hints or complete solutions.
