In seven essays, the contributors to the volume explore the role of African Americans in government and law during Reconstruction in the Palmetto State. In essays that explore the role of African American attorneys in South Carolina, W. Lewis Burke considers an all-but-forgotten phase in the history of the University of South Carolina Law School—the education and graduation of Black students in the 1870s—and John Oldfield sheds light on a law school administered by and for African Americans in post-Reconstruction South Carolina. Michael Mounter tells the story of Richard T. Greener, the first African American graduate of harvard and the first African American professor at the University of South Carolina. The eminent Reconstruction historian Eric Foner opens and concludes the volume by placing in national perspective the lives of these African Americans and the events in which they participated.

Drawing heavily on primary sources, including newspapers, government documents, legislative records, pamphlets, and speeches, Lacy K. Ford recaptures the varied and sometimes contradictory ideas and attitudes held by groups of white southerners as they tried to square slavery with their democratic ideals. He excels at conveying the political, intellectual, economic, and social thought of leading white southerners, vividly recreating the mental world of the varied actors and capturing the vigorous debates over slavery. He also shows that there was not one antebellum South but many, and not one southern white mindset but several, with the debates over slavery in the upper South quite different in substance from those in the deep South. In the upper South, where tobacco had fallen into comparative decline by 1800, debate often centered on how the area might reduce its dependence on slave labor and "whiten" itself, whether through gradual emancipation and colonization or the sale of slaves to the cotton South.
