Book The Significance of Zoochromes

Download or read book The Significance of Zoochromes written by A.E. Needham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the title indicates, the theme of this book is the functions of biochromes in animals. Recent works on zoochromes, such as those of D. L. Fox (1953), H. M. Fox and VEVERS (1960) and VUILLAUME (1969), have been concerned primarily with the chemical nature and the taxonomic distribution of these materials, and although function has been considered where relevant this has not been the centre of interest and certainly not the basis for the arrangement of the subject matter. Functional significance is a profitable focus of interest, since it is the one theme which can make biochromatology a discrete and integral subject, and because it is the main interest in all biological fields. At present chromatology seems to be a particularly schizoid subject since it is clear that in metabolic functions biochromes are acting in a chemical capacity whereas integumental pigments function mainly biophysically, in neurological and behavioural contexts. It is profitable to attempt an integration by studying the functions of as many chromes as possible, from all aspects.

  • Author : David M. Gates
  • Publisher : Courier Corporation
  • Release : 2012-04-26
  • ISBN : 0486140792
  • Pages : 642 pages

Download or read book Biophysical Ecology written by David M. Gates and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic and highly influential text presents a uniquely comprehensive view of the field of biophysical ecology. In its analytical interpretation of the ecological responses of plants and animals to their environments, it draws upon studies of energy exchange, gas exchange, and chemical kinetics. The first four chapters offer a preliminary treatment of the applications of biophysical ecology, discussing energy and energy budgets and their applications to plants and animals, and defining radiation laws and units. Succeeding chapters concern the physical environment, covering the topics of radiation, convection, conduction, and evaporation. The spectral properties of radiation and matter are reviewed, along with the geometrical, instantaneous, daily, and annual amounts of both shortwave and longwave radiation. The book concludes with more elaborate analytical methods for the study of photosynthesis in plants and energy budgets in animals, in addition to animal and plant temperature responses. This text will prove of value to students and environmental researchers from a variety of fields, particularly ecology, agronomy, forestry, botany, and zoology.

Book Color Change Mechanisms of Cold blooded Vertebrates

Download or read book Color Change Mechanisms of Cold blooded Vertebrates written by Horace Harry Waring and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Color Change Mechanisms of Cold-Blooded Vertebrates focuses on color change in vertebrates and its relation to endocrine control. The book first tackles physiological color changes in amphibians, elasmobranchs, teleosts, and cyclostomes. Topics include description of responses, nonvisual response, criticisms of the two-hormone hypothesis as applied to amphibians and elasmobranchs, and summary of teleost color change mechanisms. The publication then elaborates on physiological color changes in reptiles and biological assay of melanin-dispersing hormones, as well as generalities about reptilian color change, general statement on biological assay, and theoretical considerations. The manuscript ponders on the chemistry of melanin-dispersing hormones, mechanism of the melanophore, and actions of melanin-dispersing hormones on functions other than color change. Discussions focus on glandular origin of melanin-dispersing hormones, energy sources for melanin movement, and metabolism.

They feature independently movable eyes. This comprehensive volume delves into these fascinating details and thorough research about one of the most charismatic families of reptilesÑChameleonidae. Written for professional herpetologists, scholars, researchers, and students, this book takes readers on a voyage across time to discover everything that is known about chameleon biology: anatomy, physiology, adaptations, ecology, behavior, biogeography, phylogeny, classification, and conservation. A description of the natural history of chameleons is given, along with the fossil record and typical characteristics of each genus. The state of chameleons in the modern world is also depicted, complete with new information on the most serious threats to these remarkable reptiles.
